NotesJohn Gilbert Chilcott (born ca. 1818, died ca. 1915) was a solicitor living in Truro, Cornwall. He was married to Elizabeth Chilcott. He started his career as an Attorney in the county of Truro but by 1851 was living at Strangways Terrace and working as a solicitor. His first daughter, Helen, was born in that year. By 1861 he and Elizabeth had eight children: Helen, Mary, Emelyn (sometimes spelled Emelyne), Lucy, Gilbert, Ethel, Mabel, Charlotte. The 1871 census also lists two more sons, Harry and Hugh but omits Gilbert. Gilbert however reappears on the 1881 census for the family. A son, H.C. Chilcott, died on February 28, 1880 while at Clifton College. From 1871 to 1891 the family lived at Gwendroc House in Truro with a few servants and nursemaids. Chilcott held the post of Mayor of Truro from 1876 to 1877 and also was a proprietor of the Royal Institute of Cornwall.
