NotesThe name on the bookplate is a well-known figure in Canadian history. Born 1766 in Saint-Francois-du-Lac Québec, Jean Dessaulles was a seigneurial agent, militia officer, and politician. Dessaulles served as a major in the local militia in the War of 1812, after his cousin Hyacinthe-Marie Delorme became ill. In 1814 Dessaulles inherited part of the seigneury of his cousin Delorme after he died. In 1816 he married Marie-Rosalie, daughter of Joseph Papineau. Dessaulles was also elected as a Legislative Assemblyman of Lower Canada for Richelieu in 1816, where he continued to represent them until 1830. At the end of 1831 Dessaulles was invited to sit on the Legislative Council, which he sat on for two years, and supported the operation of the college of Saint-Hyacinthe. Dessaulles died in 1835.
