NotesGilbert Finlay Girdwood was originally from Scotland. He married Susan Sophia Bazeley and was the father of Gilbert Prout Girdwood (see bookplate BP MUR CAN P G73966). Gilbert Finlay Girdwood was a successful practitioner of medicine in London for 35 years. He was a surgeon, chemist, druggist, chapman, and general practitioner in Paddington. He wrote and published papers on various subjects, including cholera and the use of saline injections into patients' veins. On December 17, 1833, his partnership with William Jones as surgeons, apothecaries, and accoucheurs was dissolved by their mutual consent. The debts owing to their partnership were to be received and paid by Girdwood. On July 18, 1850, a petition for bankruptcy was filed against Girdwood. On October 11, 1850, Joshua Evans, Esq., a Commissioner for Her Majesty, asked for an audit of Girdwood's accounts and estate. The same day Girdwood countered with a request for the court to grant him a certificate confirming his conformity with the new bankruptcy law, The Bankrupt Law Consolidation Act, 1849. The court granted Girdwood a Certificate of the Second Class on October 1850 indicating that his bankruptcy did not wholly arise from inevitable losses and misfortunes. The certificate also indicates that the court saw no reason to think there was dishonesty in the contents or completeness of the discovery of Girdwood's estate and effects. The Canada Medical Journal announced Girdwood's death in 1869.
