NotesImperial Cotton Co. Ltd. was established in Hamilton Ontario in 1900 at 270 Sherman Ave. by Charles T. Grantham, a bookkeeper from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Ingersoll Coin, 2015). Grantham had come from a cotton mill venture in Yarmouth that had been established in 1863. Imperial Cotton was funded by John Patterson, one of the "fathers" of Hamilton's "Industrial Age" (Ingersoll). His brother Edmond Patterson was designated as the architect. James M. Young (son of John Young, Dundas Cotton Co., 1860-1891) served as the first president (Ingersoll, 2015). The cotton duck manufacturing plant produced heavy grade materials including sails, mechanical belting, railway car roofing, tarpaulins, awnings, cotton paper dryers, etc. (Ottawa Journal, 1924). From 1920-1926, the company produced a quarterly employee newsletter known as "The Fabricator." Editions can be found in the Hamilton Public Library Local History and Archives Collection (Ingersoll ; Cotton Factory). In 1924, the company was acquired and consolidated by Cosmos Imperial Mills Ltd., which was formerly Yarmouth Duck and Cotton (Consolidations, 1933).
