NotesLes Soeurs Grises de la Croix (The Grey Nuns of the Cross), now known as Les Soeurs de la Charité (The Sisters of Charity) of Ottawa was founded by Élisabeth Bruyère in 1845. They are a charitable ministry that emphasizes hospital ministry, education, pastoral care, and community service. Sister Élisabeth entered the Congregation of the Grey Nuns of Montreal in 1839, taking the habit in 1840. In 1845, Sister Élisabeth founds the religious community in Bytown (now Ottawa). They became autonomous from the Montreal community in 1854. Mother Élisabeth Bruyère was elected the Superior General of the congregation, a position she would be re-elected to until her death on April 5, 1876. In addition to setting up dispensaries, Catholic schools, and orphanages, Sister Élisabeth founded the first hospital of Bytown with the help of several physicians, including Ottawa mayor Pierre Saint-Jean. This hospital became Ottawa General Hospital (now the Ottawa Hospital). Sister Élisabeth purchased the hospital building for $240 in 1845. In 1847, a typhus epidemic in Ottawa leads to the expansion of the hospital. In 1850, Bishop Guigues bought a different building for the hospital so that the Sisters could serve more people. In the 1860s, the hospital moved to a new site and performed its first surgical operation. The General Hospital is associated with D'Youville School, whose first class of nurses graduated in 1902. In 1922, Grace Hospital opened, followed by Civil Hospital in 1924. After a series of expansions and increased services, Riverside, Civic, and General hospital amalgamated in 1998 to become The Ottawa Hospital
