NotesThomas Murray was born in Toronto in 1878. In the 1890s he apprenticed as a tailor and later worked in the garment industry in Montreal. He made his wealth as the owner of a manufacturing business between 1918 and 1928. After retiring at fifty, he focused on book collection. He opened the Bleury Book Store on Bleury Street in Montreal, later opening the second branch on St. Catherine Street. He operated these stores until 1949, all the while collecting 11 volumes of bookplates. The Thomas Murray Collection at UBC features stock from his bookstore and other rare items from his private collection. UBC purchased the Thomas Murray Collection in 1958 for $60, 000. This RBSC Bookplates Collection features over 500 bookplates from Murray's collection.
