NotesIser Steiman was born in 1898 in Dvinsk, Lativia to Soloman and Etza Steiman (née Feigleson). He married Laura Shatsky in March 1926 and the couple had two children (Marcelyn and Cherie, born in 1927 and 1933 respectively). Steiman emigrated to Winnipeg in 1912. He studied at St. John's High School and then, during World War I, taught at Moose Bay School. Steiman graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1924 with a Doctor of Medicine. He then practiced in Benito, Manitoba and Arran and Pelly, Saskatchewan, eventually moving to Kamsack in 1929. In Kamsack, Steiman opened the King Edward Hospital in November 1932. Steiman practiced at King Edward Hospital until 1940 when he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). He became a flight lieutenant and served as both a medical officer and translator at training stations in Manitoba. Dr. William C. Gibson, commenting on the Historical Collection of the Woodward Biomedical Library, recalls Steiman as a "companion from Air Force days" and the two worked on translations together. Steiman translated "Fundamentals of Aviation Medicine" from Russian and the translation was published in 1943. Steiman continued to translate other works from Russian after leaving the RCAF and moving to Vancouver, British Columbia. While in Vancouver, Steiman also practiced family medicine and wrote about the history of medicine before retiring in 1975. Dr. Steiman contributed to the collection in the Memorial Room at Woodward Biomedical Library, including two volumes of Hippocrates in Greek and Latin published in Geneva in 1657. Steiman died on April 17, 1981. The Iser Steiman family fonds are available at the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan. In 1987, the University of British Columbia created the Iser Steiman Memorial Scholarship in Translation. UBC Library has two books by Iser Steiman: "P.V. Posnikov : pioneer Russian physician" (1965) call number: M-2091 ; and "Life and times of Elie de Cyon : a reconstruction and a reappraisal" (n.d.) call number: M-3071.
