NotesFounded in 1831, the British Association, otherwise known as the British Association for the Advancement of Science, was formed to promote, discuss, and share scientific study at annual meetings and is still active today. The most famous of these meetings was at Oxford in 1860, where T. H. Huxley, in Charles Darwin's stead, debated with bishop Samuel Wilberforce in support of Darwinism ('The Origin of Species' was published the year before). In 1884, the date of this bookplate, the forum was held at Montreal in August, and held numerous lectures, debates, and forums on geology, meteorology, physics, chemistry, anthropology, mathematics, physiology, and other various topics. The full report on the meeting, which includes synopsis of lectures and association information can be accessed through Gallica. Small tear on upper right corner.
