NotesThe London Gazette of Tuesday, March 12, 1895 noted that, at the Court at Windsor, the 8 March 1895, Hugh Lyle Smyth, of Barrowmore Hall, Chester, Esq. was appointed High Sheriff of Cheshire. The High Sheriff is considered the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county, however, through the centuries responsibilities have mostly been transferred elsewhere or no longer exist, and today the High Sheriff remains mostly a ceremonial position.
