NotesA succession of Alexander Thistlethwayte Esquires of Southwick Park, in Hampshire have played important and influential roles as landowners in the south of England. A portrait of The [Alexander 1718-1771] Thistlethwayte Family by Thomas Hudson, ca. 1758, may be found in North America, having recently been acquired by the Yale Center for British Art on the occasion of their 25th anniversary. The Alexander Thistlethwayte pictured in the family portrait served as a Member of Parliament for Hampshire from 1754 to 1761. The owner of this bookplate may also be the same Alexander Thistlethwayte who donated 3500 volumes in Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin and Spanish to Winchester College in 1768. Based upon the continuous succession of Alexander Thistlethwaytes, it is difficult to determine precisely which family member commissioned this bookplate.
