NotesThomas Taylor (28 December 1727 - 5 January 1805) is of the Taylor family of Beaconfield, Denbury, and Ogwell, county Devon. He is a descendent of Joseph Taylor who, by 1714 served in the royal navy as Captain of the flagship stationed at Plymouth, and son to Mary and, Joseph Taylor, who served as a member of parliament. There are several Thomas Taylors mentioned in Hazlitt's A Roll of Honour, a chronicle of prominent manuscript and book collectors. It is believed, that this bookplate belongs to Thomas Taylor, esquire who married Elizabeth Pierce and served as a magistrate for Devon. Taylor was a supporter of leading conservative satirist and poet, William Gifford, Esquire.
