NotesW. Gordon Mills was an executive with the T. Eaton Company in Toronto in 1923 ; he wrote 'Tale of the Mississaugas' the same year, an epic poem detailing the creation myth of the Mississaugas. He was an occasional art critic and served on the council of the Art Gallery of Toronto. He later served as Deputy Minister of National Defence for Naval Services in WWII. He was named Companion of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George for his services. His wife Doris Huestis Speirds, for whom the poem was dedicated, was a painter and close friend of the members of the Group of Seven. His birth and death dates are unknown. The sonata named on the plate is Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 23, one of his greatest piano sonatas.
