NotesWhile the bookplate owner is named as E. W. Neville, it appears as if this bookplate was originally designed for Toronto resident Lorne Pierce (1890-1961). Pierce commissioned the illustrator Marjorie Sankey to design his bookplate, which she based on the Wesley building at 299 Queen West Street in Toronto, home to Ryerson Press where Pierce was editor-in-chief from 1920-1959. The original ex libris with Lorne Pierce's name is featured in Robert Stacey's 1994 Canadian Bookplates. Interestingly, the Phillippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University contains a copy of both bookplates ; one with Lorne Pierce's name, as well as the one with E. W. Neville's name. Aside from the names, the only other difference is the addition of 'more light' and 'more love' on the two building columns in Neville's ex libris. Little is known about the artist Marjorie Sankey, although her name is featured on both versions of the bookplate. She appeared to have some success as an illustrator and bookplate engraver in the 20s and 30s in Toronto. Additionally, her skill was thought of highly enough that she was asked to create a bookplate for artist, and fellow bookplate designer, Alexander Scott Carter.
