NotesThe owner was likely the Reverend Thomas Troughton (November 19, 1817-September 16, 1880), the son of Thomas Troughton, an ironmonger and mayor of the town of Preston in Lancashire from 1834-1835, and Rachel Moore Troughton. Troughton received his B.A. from Trinity College, Cambridge, and on September 9, 1841 married Mary Robinson, the only daughter of Joseph Robinson, also of Preston. Although little is known about Troughton after this, in "A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland for 1852, " he is listed as a clergyman. Troughton 'late of Highfield, Ashton-upon-Ribble, in the country of Lancaster, Clerk in Holy Orders' died on September 16, 1880. The ex libris of Troughton's first cousin by marriage, John Caton Thompson (1801-?), is also in the Thomas Murray Bookplate Collection, as is the ex libris of his second cousin by marriage, Marcus Brown Westhead (c. 1834-1897).
