NotesThe firm of Chapeleau and Lamothe was a bookbindery and ecclesiastical bookshop in Montreal in the mid-nineteenth century, at least as early as 1844. The firm's partners, Zephirin Chapeleau and J.M. Lamothe later dissolved the partnership in order to run their own establishments in 1848. Chapeleau and Lamothe was located on Rue Sainte Therese before moving to Rue Notre-Dame, facing the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice de Montréal. After establishing his own business in 1848, Chapeleau appears to have had various locations on Rue Notre-Dame, including 84/86 Notre-Dame and 112 Rue Notre-Dame. Later, Chapeleau established a partnership with Louis Labelle, with whom he operated as booksellers, editors and bookbinders, and importers of French religious articles. The firm of Z. Chapeleau and LaBelle had premises at 174/175 Rue Notre-Dame and operated until at least 1886, serving clients in both Canada and the United States. Although little is know about these men, it appears that Zephirin Chapeleau was a Justice of the Peace for the city of Montreal in 1885, according to Lovell's Montreal Directory for 1885-86, and was 2nd vice president of the L'Union of St. Joseph de Montreal in 1857.
