NotesSir Lawrence Palk (1766-1813), the son of Sir Robert Palk and Anne Vansittart, was born in Madras, India, where his father was governor. He attended school at Christ Church, Oxford, and was 1st Member of Parliament for Ashburton, 1787-1796 and 2nd Member of Parliament for Devon, 1796-1812. His first marriage ended in 1791 with the death of his first wife, Mary (daughter of John Bligh, 1st Earl of Darnley). He married Dorothy Elizabeth (daughter of Wilmot Vaughan, 1st Earl of Lisburne) in 1792. Sir Lawrence Palk became the 2nd Baronet in 1798, upon the death of his father. Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel (1757-1806) was born in Exeter, England, to Abraham and Sarah Ezekiel. He lived in Exeter as an engraver, optician, goldsmith, and printseller. His engravings include portraits, trade engravings, and bookplates. 19 bookplates of his design are known, though most are rare. This plate is one of the more common ones. The manuscript notes on the front of this bookplate are shelf markings ; these have been observed in multiple copies of this bookplate. The manuscript notation on the back of the bookplate is in a different color ink and written ina different hand than the notes on the front.
