NotesGiven the scope of the Thomas Murray Collection, it is possible that this bookplate belonged to the following famous surgeon in Montreal, but the common name means this attribution is uncertain. Dr. James Bell (1852-1914) was an eminent surgeon in Montreal, having trained at McGill University, from which he graduated in 1877, and later returning there to teach surgery. He held surgery posts at several prestigious hospitals in Montreal. Dr. Bell was particularly known for his knowledge and skill pertaining to the abdomen and kidneys. He was a surgeon for the Sixth Battalion of Fusiliers between 1880 and 1888, including service in the field during the Riel Rebellion. He was married in 1889 to Miss Edith Alary Arnton, and their only child, James Stuart Ethelwyn Wallace Bell was born in 1899. Dr. Bell had a significant farm where he raised horses and cattle and indulged his love of outdoor sports and hunting. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Dr. Bell died of complications from appendicitis, despite having written himself several articles on the proper treatment of the disease and the high chance of survival after removal of the appendix. Lost medical records and conflicting verbal reports mean the treatment of Dr. Bell's own appendicitis remains unknown. A copy of this ex libris is also available in the Philippe Masson Ex Libris Collection at McGill University.
