NotesThis motto is traditionally associated with the Porter family, and this crest with the Porters of Weary Hall, co. Cumberland and of The Close, co. Cumberland. The porters of The Close appear to be descended from those of Weary Hall, and those of Weary Hall themselves are a younger branch of the Allerby Porters. This bookplate is nearly identical to another in the Murray Collection, BP MUR SL P P678, which likely belonged to a John Bonsall Porter. However, these two bookplates were not near each other in Thomas Murray's original arrangement, so context cannot help tie them together.
