NotesStanley Clark Bagg was a prestigious member of one of the oldest English families in Montreal. He was born there in 1820 and graduated from McGill University. He became a notary in 1842 and practiced until his father's death in 1856, at which point he focused on managing the family land holdings in Montreal and England. He married Catharine Mitcheson in 1844, and they had one son, Robert Stanley Bagg. Throughout his life, Bagg was on the fringes of various political movements, turning down several nominations to be run for office. Instead, he devoted time to his interests in numismatics (the study of currency) and archeology. In pursuit of these interests he helped found the Numismatic Society of Montreal in 1862, which became the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Montreal in 1866. He also joined a variety of other scientific associations, both in Montreal and internationally. Bagg was also one of the founders of the English Workingman's Benefit Society, and a lifelong member of the Young Men's Christian Association. Bagg wrote numerous scientific articles in local and international newspapers, and even published an article in the society journal shortly before his death and another posthumously in the same issue as his obituary. Stanley Clark Bagg died in 1873.
