[Bookplate for Henry Christopher Wise] In black ink. No escutcheon. A straight crest wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, holding a damask rose, stalked leaved and seeded, in the mouth a snake that is entwined about the body. 162. [Bookplate for Ernest Frederick Hick] In black ink. This twentieth century bookplate features a Canadian design. In the center is an escutcheon charged with a large maple leaf, seed pods and the originator's initial 'H.' The escutcheon is set on a dark, circular background and surrounded by maple boughs. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's name. 163. [Bookplate for Montreal Library for Boys and Girls] Dark brown ink on light brown paper. An image of a young boy and girl in a library with many books open and on the floor. The young girl reaches up to pull down a book from the top shelf while the boy sits cross-legged on the floor reading. 164. [Bookplate for Hugh John Macdonald] Black ink on white paper. Above the escutcheon on a straight wreath, sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet. Below the wreath a vizored helm with mantling appears. The escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green) and a lymphad in the dexter base, argent. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 165. [Bookplate for Macdonald College] Bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A small coat of arms for Macdonald College appears above, with pre-printed lines containing a hand-written call number and date listed below in black ink. The word 'discarded' is stamped across the middle in blue ink. 166. [Bookplate for Marcus Brown Westhead] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield quartered. First and fourth quarter, argent, two barrulets dancette sable, between three Saracens' heads couped at the shoulders proper, wreathed round the temples, of the first and second. Second and third quarter, azure, on a fesse argent, between three martlets in chief, and the Roman fasces erect surmounting two swords in saltire, and encircled by a chaplet in base or, three chess-rooks sable. Center inescutcheon, party per chevron or and azure, in chief a mullet of six points lies between two crosses pattée of the last, and in base the front elevation of a chapel argent, the whole being charged with a crescent for difference. First crest, on a wreath of the colors, within a fetterlock or, a Saracen's head couped proper, wreathed round the temples argent and sable. Second crest, on a wreath of the colours, a demi-eagle displayed with two heads azure, charged on the breast with the fasces, swords, and chaplet, as in the arms. The escutcheon is surrounded by mantling and below a banner bears the motto 'ORA ET LABORA.'. 167. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.' The post is standing in a marsh. 168. [Bookplate for Brockville Library] In black ink on white paper, the bookplate consists of a thin black border close to the edge of the paper, surrounding a title above a decorative rule or bar, below which is the main text in black ink. 169. [Bookplate for Brockville Library] In black ink on tan paper, the bookplate consists of a double zigzag border surrounding black text. The library name at the top is flanked by two rosettes and separated from the remaining text by a decorative rule. 170. [Bookplate for Rev. Pierre Beaumont] The bookplate is printed in black ink on cream paper, now discolored. One penciled notation in the lower left. 171. [Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 172. [Bookplates for Bell Telephone Company of Canada] This bookplate is in two parts ' one to show who made the presentation, the other to show ownership by the library. Part 1 (upper): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a dotted line at the bottom on which to record the name of the presenter. Part 2 (lower): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a small form number in the upper right, the major text with parts bolded, and a grid below that for recording due dates. Both of these pieces have an unused full glue coating on the back. 173. [Bookplate for Dilys Jones] Printed in black ink on faded red paper. Heraldic crest is top centre. Text is surrounded by a thin black border. 174. [Bookplate for Bibliotheque St. Jacques] A simple border surrounds the text printed in black ink. 175. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black and blue ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate in blue ink. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library in Germanic lettering and the name of the town in cursive. 176. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 177. [Bookplate for J. H. Hagarty] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features an armoured arm holding on to a sabre. The arm is coming out of a crest-wreath. The shield is argent with a sable chief. The chief is charged with three white birds trussed. The bottom section of the shield is argent and charged with a tall, leafy tree. The tree has three roots extending out. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, block, sans serif white letters. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 178. [Bookplate for B. Hallé by L. P.] Black ink on white paper. Thin, double-lined black border with rounded corners surrounds the bookplate. The background is filled in with vertical thin black stripes. At the top of the bookplate is printed capitalized sans-serif block text filled with horizontal black stripes. Some of the text is obscured by the top of a feather quill, which extends from the top right corner down to the bottom left corner. On top of the center of the quill is an open scroll with the top and bottom ends still rolled. The bookplate creator’s initials are printed in black sans-serif font on the curl of the paper at the top of the scroll. Cursive sentence case black font is printed on the scroll. The bottom of the scroll just grazes the bookplate author’s name, which is printed in the same large sans-serif block font with the horizontal stripes that is used for the text at the top of the bookplate. 179. [Bookplate for L. Emile Grothé by Aimé Dufesne] Black ink on white paper. Border has white outlines, shaded for a three-dimensional effect and is filled in with thin black lines. The top and bottom sides of the border indent in the middle with squared corners. The left and right sides of the border indent in the middle with rounded corners. The top half of the bookplate has diagonal black lines extending wider from the centre. The top left corner features a person wearing a feathered headdress and a sash holding arrows in their left hand and a bow in their right hand. They are standing on a decorative ledge connected to the border and sitting atop of an elaborate curlicue. The right corner has the same curlicue and ledge and a person in a long coat and striped hat holding a pouch stands atop it. Between the two figures is an open book. The bottom of the top half of the bookplate contains half a round map of the world surrounded by a thick border of the same style as the overall bookplate border. The owner’s motto is written across the map’s border in thin, capitalized, sans-serif font. A rectangular border of the same design sits in the centre of the bookplate. The top of the border features large, captitalized, serif block font. The font is white with a black background and white stripes surrounding that background. On either side of that text are half circle decorations in a vertical stack between two thin white borders. The centre of the rectangle within the borders has a grey background with capitalized, sans-serif block font printed on top. The font is black with a white outline and dark shading. Two shields hang below the rectangle on the left and right side. The shield on the left is argent with sable dots per fess. The top third of the crest is charged with two fleurs-des-lis. The central portion of the crest, featuring sable and argent stripes. is charged with a lion passant guardant. The bottom third of the crest is charged with three maple leaves with connected stems. The shield on the right is per pale consisting of sable and argent stripes and argent with sable dots. The left side is charged with two lions passant that are argent with sable dots. The right side is charged with a lion sejant erect and eight hearts, each of which are sable and argent striped. Between the two crests, hanging from the central rectangular feature, is a checkered black rectangle with white borders on the left, right, and bottom sides. White curlicues extend from the left and right sides. Similar curlicues, leafy decoration, and black strip adorned with small circles extend from the bottom of the rectangle. The background of the bottom half of the bookplate not covered with other decorative features has the same black stripes as the top half. In the bottom left and right corners of the bookplate are four books each, spines facing out. Next to the books on the left is a black inkwell with two feather quills in it. Next to the inkwell is a beehive on a wooden platform surrounded by five bees. On the right of the beehive is an oil lamp with a bright flame burning. Outside the bottom border, inside the indent, the bookplate creator’s name and date of creation is printed in thin, black, sentence-case, serif font. 180. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font.
