[Bookplate for Imperial Cotton Co. by R&M] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The scene depicts dark-skinned laborers working in a cotton field. In the right-hand side of the foreground, a laborer holds a large wicker basket full of cotton on their head. To the left are two other large wicker baskets full of cotton. At least four other laborers recede into the depth of the field. They wear loose, baggy clothing and wide-brimmed hats. In the background is a wide, low brick factory building with smokestacks on the far left and one low, square tower with a flag in the middle. Below this scene is the insignia of the Dominion Crown and the text identifying the Imperial Cotton Co. 2. [Bookplate for William Hall Walker by F.] Dense with imagery, this bookplate consists of a central framed coat of arms, surrounded by many symbols and figures, including a rose, a portcullis, a bird, a small argent escutcheon charged with a lion rampant, a thistle, military insignia, mounted hunting spoils, an anchor, rifles, swords, polo mallets, horseracing emblems, horse carriage hook-up, foliage, tree branches, and knights on horseback. The knight on the left sits upon an armored sable horse, holds a lance in his right arm, and wears a cornucopia crested helmet. The knight on the right sits upon a unarmored white horse and holds a white flag in his right hand, on which is the image of a tree and fox on a circular white and azure (blue) background. The coat of arms, presented within a border of grape vines and under the motto 'By Care and Industry', consists of a white horse and stag as supporters, with juxtaposed garbe, proper. The escutcheon, argent, contains both a chief and saltier. The chief is argent (silver), with two argent mullets of six points and garbe, proper. The saltier, argent, is charged with eight seedlings eradicated and a stag's head, erased, at its centre. Atop the shield is a baron's coronet and helmet, grated and in profile, crested by a wreath and cornucopia. 3. [Bookplate for Burton’s Limited Circulating Library] In black ink on tan paper. [Bookplates for Bell Telephone Company of Canada] This bookplate is in two parts ' one to show who made the presentation, the other to show ownership by the library. Part 1 (upper): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a dotted line at the bottom on which to record the name of the presenter. Part 2 (lower): This bookplate is composed of black text, with a small form number in the upper right, the major text with parts bolded, and a grid below that for recording due dates. Both of these pieces have an unused full glue coating on the back. 6. [Bookplate for J. I. Frank Anthes] In red and black ink on cream or white paper, the bookplate consists of a red double border surrounding black text. 7. [Bookplate for Gladys Reid] Created with black ink on white paper this pictorial bookplate depicts an animal, possibly a dog, prancing in a field. Surrounding the animal are flowers and leaves. The bookplate is further decorated with decorative borders illustrated with vines. 8. [Bookplate for Ludger Gravel] Printed in blue ink, surrounded by a border composed of three wavy lines, the bookplate features a coat of arms. The Jerusalem Cross is borne in red on a gold field in the chief. The lower shield features Hermes and the Caduceus on a red field. It is topped by a closed helm of gold, in profile. A banner is beneath the coat of arms, as well as the owner’s name. 9. [Bookplate for Fiction Inn Circulating Library] Printed in black ink, the text discloses terms of use for the circulating library. Includes pre-printed form for checking in/out books. One and a partial date are visible, stamped in blue ink. 10. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 11. [Bookplate for Iser Steiman M.D. by A. N. T.] Black ink on cream paper. Man, no shoes, chest bare, book hugged against torso with left arm, while right arm holds open a book held at eye level. Sunlight illuminates the man. Deciduous tree in foreground. Hills in background. 12. [Bookplate for Hillfield School] In green ink. This textual print consists of letterpress type and handwritten script. There is a straight wreath crested by a boar's head, above a banner with Latin motto, at the top of the print. 13. [Bookplate] In brown ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding brown text, with the name of the company/library in a Roman-style font. 14. [Bookplate for Ludger Gravel by Impremerie Ludger Gravel] Printed in black ink, the double-line border surrounds the text of the owner’s name, address, and book number. 15. [Bookplate for Rufus Hawtin Hathaway by J. E. MacDonald] Printed in black ink on cream-coloured paper. An interior scene depicts a robed and tonsured monk sitting in a study room. The monk is seated with his head resting in his right hand on the far side of a lectern that holds three open, vellum-bound manuscripts. Behind the monk, an open wooden cupboard is topped by a niche shelf with many closed, bound vellum manuscripts and a human skull. To the far left, there is a recessed bench seat at a diamond paned window containing several objects, including a crucifix, an hour glass, and another manuscript. The entire scene is framed by a border that contains the owner’s name and motto, as well as decorative vine-leaf scrollwork. 16. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The bookplate is a dedication bookplate recognizing a specific collection, as well as the benefactors that rendered it possible for The University of British Columbia to acquire it. The bookplate has no art, symbols, or colour on it, and appears to be only a dedication. 17. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The text of the bookplate is framed by 3 black fillets in a rectangular form. On the left and right sides of the frame there are 6 palmetes and on the header and footer of the frame there are 9 palmetes. There are no colors or other decorations on the bookplate. 18. There are three seashells on the left and right side of the frame and six seashells on the top and bottom of the frame. 19. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The bookplate has set after the initial text of, "THE LIBRARY," the following shield. A grey box holding the UBC shield inside. The shield is set in black in white with a grey chief within which a book running from sinister chief to dexter chief with the words 'Tuum est' inscribed. Below exist three wavy lines on an argent field. In the base is a sun with six rays issuing from it. 20. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The bookplate has after the initial Text a picture based on a woodcut engraving of Vesalius, a classical anatomist. The picture is in an azure ink and shows a man pointing out various anatomical points of a human arm. This bookplate identifies books purchased as a collection by UBC Library from Dr. Hugh Macdonald Sinclair with funds provided by Harvey Reginald "H.R."
