[Bookplate for Vancouver Medical Association] Black ink on white paper. Text is surrounded by a simple double border. Donor information is typewritten. 182. [Bookplate for Henry Messerschmidt] On white paper in black ink, this bookplate includes a photographic reproduction of Henry Messerschmidt amongst the calligraphic text. 183. [Bookplate] Image shows both the recto and verso of the sample bookplate sheet produced by the Globe Wernicke Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The sheet contains two sample bookplates. The one on the left, in colour, shows two white swans on a water-lily spotted lake. On the distant shoreline, one can see among the green foliage the rooftop and chimney of a home. The image is framed by an oval floral border on a yellow and white background. The second sample bookplate, on the right, shows a pirate on a beach, either burying treasure or digging it up. On the pale blue water of the horizon, a ship sits in wait. The sample bookplate sheet is divided into four sections by perforated lines. The recto also includes a mail order form for more sample bookplates and a booklet on "The World's Best Books". The verso includes the reverse of the mail order form, complete with place for a stamp, and also an advertisement for Globe-Wernicke bookcases. 184. [Bookplate for Thomae Perczel de Bonyhad and J. E. Horvath] The shield occupying the centre of the bookplate is quartered with rampant lions queue fourché on the dexter chief and sinister base, bendlets on the dexter base and a bend on the sinister chief. Two young figures act as supporters ; the one on the left holds an open book while gazing towards the sinister supporter. The shield and figures rest on an ornate panel with the ownership text. A heavy curtain is draped on top and to the left of the shield and behind it a book case is visible. At the bottom of the bookplate it is noted that the image is a reproduction of an old engraving (Nach einem alten Stich). 185. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath] Circular black ink text on white paper. 186. [Bookplate for Lipot Kecskemeti and J. E. Horvath] In brown ink, this elaborate bookplate depicts an artistic representation of the light of ten candles radiating through what appears to be the shape of the ten commandment tablets. The light energy streams up between a floral arrangement of roses and another flower through an encircled Star of David and into the heavens represented by stars and a cresent moon. 187. [Bookplate for Cornelia de Rozsnyayn-Prielle and J. E. Horvath] In red ink on brown paper, this bookplate presents us with a garden scene showing a young amorous couple coming down a pathway. In the background, we see a garden retreat, a fence and gate, and a water fountain. In the foreground is a bench, on which lie a lyre, an open book, a stem and flowers, and what appears to be a floral wreath or possibly a scarf. On the right are steps leading off the page on which sit a stone sphinx. 188. [Bookplate for R. W. Urwin by Diocese of Durham] At the top of this bookplate, above the text, is the arms of the bishopric of Durham. The escutcheon is azure (blue), and contains an or (gold) cross patonce. Each quadrant of the cross contains a lion rampant. On top of the shield is a bishop's mitre. As the Bishops of Durham were formerly princes of the Palatinate of Durham, this mitre has the unique distinction of also including a ducal coronet which provides for greater heraldic distinction. The bookplate is in letterpress with handwritten inserts. 189. [Bookplate for Rob. S. Atcheson] In black ink, this bookplate contains a rooster atop a horn, which is itself atop a straight wreath. The rooster is a common heraldic symbol that stands for vigilence. Above the rooster is a banner containing the latin motto. 190. [Bookplate for George R. Alexander] This heraldic bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon with a galley at its centre. A galley is an ancient vessel propelled by oars, and is frequently used in the heraldry of naval officers. Also on the escutcheon are three cross crosslets fitchy sable -- one in dexter chief, one in sinister chief, and one in precise middle base. Atop the escutcheon is a half-visored helm in profile. Within the helm, one can see what appears to be the face of a cat. The helm is topped by a crest wreath and a horse's head, proper, couped and gules (red). From the helm flows extensive or and gules mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 191. [Bookplate for J. H. Ainsworth by T. E.] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The gules (red) dexter of the shield contains a small crescent at precise middle chief, and three battle axes argent (silver), two over one. The battle axe is an ancient military weapon, and placed on a shield represents a mark of prowess. The argent sinister of the shield contains a gules canton at dexter chief. The canton contains a talbot's head, erased. The sinister side of the shield also contains a chevron, ermines (a fur represented by white spots on a black field). Atop the escutcheon is the helm, grated and in profile. The helm is topped by a straight crest wreath and an armored figure holding a battle axe in his dexter hand. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 192. [Bookplate for John Bebb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with an or (gold) embattled fess. The fess contains two cross crosslets. On the azure surface of the escutcheon are three crescents, two over one. The escutcheon is bordered by an elaborate frame and topped by a visored helm in profile. Atop the helm is a crest wreath and an unicorn's head, couped and horned. From the helm flows extensive mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 193. [Bookplate for Bateman by Orlando Jewitt] This bookplate consists of an or (gold) escutcheon, on which are three etoile topped crescents, two over one. There is also an additional smaller crescent located at the precise middle chief of the escutcheon. According to heraldic symbolism, the crescent represents the second son. On top of the shield is a helmet in profile, beaver open. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and another etoile topped crescent. The crest also includes a vol (set of wings), erect, and mantling which pours down the sides of the shield. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. The image and text are framed by a thin single line border. 194. [Bookplate for Edmund F. Bourke by T. Welch] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base sections contain a gules (red) cross on an or (gold) background. At the dexter chief of each cross is a lion rampant. The dexter base and sinister chief sections are each divided per pale, with an argent (silver) dexter side and a gules (red) sinister side. In the middle of these two sections is a lion rampant surrounded by three fleur-de-lis, two over one. Sitting atop the shield on a curved crest wreath is a cat guardant with leash. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 195. [Bookplate for John Leeds Bozman] This bookplate consists of an argent (silver) escutcheon with a gules (red) fess. On the escutcheon are three sable (black) eagles, displayed, two over one. Raised above the shield on floral mantling is a curved crest wreath, and a perched cockatrice. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 196. [Bookplate for Macdonald Bridges] This bookplate consists of an argent escutcheon divided by a sable (black) cross. At the centre of the cross is a small lion's head. Atop the three-pointed shield is a small crest wreath on which rests a voyageur-type human figure, couped. Above the image is a banner containing the French motto. Below the shield is a tree, or bush, which grows up both sides of the shield, resembling heraldic mantling. 197. [Bookplate for John C. Brune] This bookplate consists of a pictorial escutcheon. The image is of a stag at speed emerging from the woods. Above the shield is a helmet, front facing with bars, topped with a crest wreath and a rack of antlers. From the sides of the helmet flows elaborate heraldic mantling. 198. [Bookplate for Gordon Elliott] In blue ink on white paper, text within a single blue line border. 199. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 200.
