[Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 62. [Bookplate for William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-FitzWilliam by John Vinycomb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon framed by a solid bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants are lozengy, argent (silver) and gules (red) ; second and third quadrants are sable (black) with an or (gold) chevron, and three lion heads, two over one. The escutcheon is crested by a large earl's coronet. Above the coronet are two additional crests ; the dexter consists of a helm, sinister and grated, crowned by what appears to be a duke's coronet, and elaborate mantling ; the sinsister consists of a helm, dexter and grated, topped by a curved wreath, a gryphon passant, and elaborate mantling. The escutcheon and bordure are supported by a male "savage" on either side. In heraldry, the "savage" is a symbol of wildness and purity. Both figures are bearded and nude, except for a wreath of leaves to cover their middle section. Both figures hold a tree trunk. The dexter figure, who appears younger, holds the trunk with his right arm and it descends behind him. The sinister figure, who appears older, holds the trunk with his left arm and it descends in front of him. The escutcheon and the figures rest on a mantel, which is draped with a banner containing the Latin motto. From the mantel hang three medals ; the medal on the left represents the Order of the British Empire, the medal in the centre represents the Royal Victorian Order, and the medal on the right represents the Distinguished Service Order. 63. [Bookplate for Charles Manby by Suffield] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with a stylized bordure. The dexter quadrant, gules (red), is charged with a lion rampant and a chief, argent (silver), with three martlets. The sinister quadrant, gules, is charged with four etoiles, two over two, and contains a canton, coloured ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), in the dexter chief of the quadrant, covering two-thirds of the etoile in that location. The canton represents the banner of the ancient Knights Banneret, which is an honourable order which has become extinct. It was on order conferred upon persons, recognized by a king or general, that had perfomed some heroic act on the battlefield. The escutcheon is crested by a straight wreath and a lion passant guardant, holding what appears to be a millrind, sable (black) in its dexter paw. The millrind is placed in the centre of a grindstone to protect the hole in the centre from the action of the axis ; it is a charge frequently used by persons connected with agriculture. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 64. [Bookplate for Alexander Millar] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a curved crest wreath and dexter cubit arm, holding an open faced book. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 65. [Bookplate for James Herriot] In black ink, a wreath crest with a cornucopia. Above the crest is a banner containing the English motto. 66. [Bookplate for Holland House] In black ink , a chapeau crimson (red), lined with ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), a fox sejant, or (gold), floating above is a coronet of a baron. 67. [Bookplate for William Molesworth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an annexed escutcheon, vair (argent [silver] and azure [blue]), with a martlet at the honour point ; and an inescutcheon, argent with a sinister hand, couped and gules (red) at the fess point. Baronets of the United Kingdom bear the red hand of Ulster. The escutcheon's bordure is gules, and contains eight cross crosslets, or (gold), three over two over three. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet of a baronet, front facing with beaver open. The helmet is crested by a curved wreath and a a sinister arm, vambraced, and holding a cross crosslet, or. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 68. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto. The bordure also contains text. 69. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 70. [Bookplate for George Short by R. Silvester] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, charged with a mullet at precise middle chief. The dexter half, gules (red) with an ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) chief, is charged with a gryphon, rampant. The sinister half, argent (silver), contains a fess, vert (green), charged with three stag's heads, cabossed. The escutcheon is crested by a wreath and a demi-gryphon, with wings displayed and elevated. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. The artist's mark, "Silvester sculp. 27 Strand, London." Is present on the bookplate. R. Silvester was a London engraver. According to Fitcham, his earliest appearance is in the London Directory of 1806. 71. [Bookplate for James John Joicey] This bookplate is printed on light brown paper with brown ink. It consists of an escutcheon argent (silver), and three diamonds in pale between two endorses in a crosshatch pattern. The escutcheon is charged with a pick-axe at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at three-quarter profile, indicating the status of peer. Upon the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a young man holding a pick-axe and lantern. Radiating from the wreath is elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Entire crest is contained within a border, with name of bookplate owner at bottom. 72. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Earl coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664b, which is presumably owned by the same individual, but before his ascendancy to title. 73. [Bookplate for Alex Thistlethwayte] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon or (gold), a bend azure (blue), charged with three pheons of the field. The rococo vegetative mantling around the upper part of the escutcheon includes a straight wreath charged with a demi-lion. The lion is holding a pheon and situated above a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon several cherubs drink, trumpet and hold aloft an ermine trimmed cloak. The cloak serves as a backdrop for a framed compartment displaying the originator's name. 74. [Bookplate for Christopher Tower] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon sable (black), a tower with two windows. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a gryphon, passant. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the English motto. 75. [Bookplate for John T. Jeffcock] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per cross. First and fourth quarter, sable (black). A chief, argent (silver), three ravens, trussed, sable. A chevron, or (gold). Three pickaxes, two over one. Cadency, crescent, linking the first and second quarters. Second quarter, parted per cross. First and fourth sub-quarter, argent, an eagle, displayed, sable, with a canton, vert (green), a buck, lodged. Second and third quarters sable, the lower half of the shield a barry of six pieces, argent and sable, a square castle, turreted, two in pale two in fess. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a mountain and an arm embowed holding a long pointed weapon with a circular handle. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the English motto. 76. [Bookplate for Thomas Le Marchant] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is divided in a paly of three, or (gold) and azure (blue). Dexter and sinister palys, or, are charged with a tree. While the center paly, azure, is charged with middle chief, a label and at the fess point a lion rampant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are gules (red) and charged with three boar heads. Quarters two and three are argent (silver) on a chief, gules, charged with two mullets, argent. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, who clutches a scythe. The demi-lion is charged with two fleur-de-lis and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Le Marchant Thomas' Latin motto. 77. [Bookplate for Cheswardine] In black ink, this bookplate consists of stylized initials in a symbol (possibly the letters 'D,' 'M,' and 'H'), surrounded by a border of stocks of wheat. At the base of the border is a banner with English motto within. 78. [Bookplate for Octavius Wigram by Suffield] In black ink. Argent, a pallet, gules, charged with three escallops, one over two divided by a chevronnel, engrailed, countercharged, gules (red). A chief, argent (silver), a ship representing an English vessel of war of the 16th century, with four masts, sails furled proper, and a flag, azure (blue), sitting on the water. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath on which is a mount supporting a hand in armour, in fess, couped at the wrist proper, charged with an escallop and holding a fleur-de-lis erect. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 79. [Bookplate for Harry M. Allice] In black ink. A picture of "The Thinker," a bronze and marble sculpture by the French artist Auguste Rodin, outlined in white and shadowed. "EX LIBRIS" above, the quote beside, and the name boxed below the sculpture. 80. [Bookplate for Catherine Aishton] In black ink. A rectangle. Celtic dog knot-work on the top, bottom, and left sides of a box with the text in it.
