[Bookplate] [Bookplate] A coat of arms with mantling: Quarterly, 1st and 4th azure, 2 bars dancetty or, in chief 3 bezants ; 2nd and 3rd azure, a fess engrailed argent, surmounted by another, not engrailed, gules, charged with 3 roses argent, between as many swans, proper. Above the coat of arms are two crests: left is a swan gorged, wings displayed and inverted, on a wreath ; right is a bull at gaze, gorged and on a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a ribbon containing the Latin motto.

4. [Bookplate for K. H. Ingalls by Ralph Fletcher Seymour] [Bookplate for K. H. Ingalls by Ralph Fletcher Seymour] A portrait bookplate with a multiple black fillet border surrounding the central images used in the bookplate. The bookplate has all 12 images of the zodiac held in small circles surrounding the periphery of the central image. At the top and bottom left and right hand corners of the image are images of vines. Central to the bookplate is the image of a wicker chair held in the bottom left hand corner next to several books sitting on a reading table. The chair is facing a brick fireplace against the far wall above which are the word "BIDE-A-WHILE". In front of the fireplace is a bear skin rug. A highbacked wooden bench with three books on it sits off on the adjacent wall to the left of the image. A similar bench sits to the right of the fireplace. A clock and several other knickknacks sit on the mantelpiece above the fireplace.

A bird displayed, wings inverted, couped with thistle in beak, with a crest wreath, argent and vert (silver and green). Beneath that is a shield, party per pale, erminois and argent. The dexter side, erminois, per chevron azure (blue) with three chess rooks, gules (red). The dexter side, argent, per fess, gules, with two diamonds, sable (black).
6. [Bookplate for Frederic William Howay] [Bookplate for Frederic William Howay] At the top is a sea otter resting on the sand with a mountainous coast in the background. Below that within a shield-shaped frame is a picture of a sailing vessel with the title "SEA OTTER" on the stern. The shield is surrounded by various sea shells, with a banner displaying the bookplate text.
7. [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens' Free Library] [Bookplate for City of Halifax and Citizens’ Free Library] Black and blue ink on cream paper. A coat of arms for the city of Halifax is printed in the upper-portion of the plate in blue ink. Within this coat of arms stands a sailor on the left, with his hand placed on the crest containing a Belted Kingfisher on a grassy mound. Directly above the crest is a masoned Sable containing a sprig of mayflower. To the right is a fisherman holding a codfish by its head. Both figures and the crest are standing upon heraldic ribbon containing Latin phrasing within it. This portion is followed by the title of the library in Germanic lettering and the name of the town in cursive.
8. [Bookplate for William Ralph Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] [Bookplate for William Ralph Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, in a swell of water, with a large cumulous cloud in the background. The image is framed by a length of rope that circles the entire bookplate. Below, a heraldic device is displayed in a circular frame. A broken ionic order column is in the center, with the top half of the column resting on the right side of the base and an oval shield with a flower on it leaning on the left side of the base. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is presented in a solid-colored shield. The rope frame meets at both sides of the shield: on the left, the rope holds an anchor and on the right it holds a ship lantern.
9. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font.

11. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a satyr playing reed pipes in a field with some flowers, surrounded by wildlife (moose, rabbit, squirrel, beaver, birds). There is a forest and water nearby, and signs of human life (tent, canoe). Pictured within a circular frame, with ribbon and text, and a crow standing on a branch at the very top looking down.

The bull has its top legs up and a curling tail, as well as two horns. The motto is printed below the crest-wreath on a curling ribbon in capitalized, black, sans serif font. Below this image, two lines of text is printed in large, capitalized, black, sans serif font.
14. [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] [Bookplate for Joint Board of Theological Colleges] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate banned frame with leaf sprigs houses the text. At the bottom of the frame, the letters MTD are incorporated amid a sprig. The outside of the frame is decorated with a repeating leaf pattern. The corners of the frame are four shields. The top left tablet shield is dotted (gold) and charged with an undecipherable center object. An open book sits atop the shield. The top right tablet shield is horizontally lined (azure) and charged with a downward facing bird (dove) at the chief and an open book at the base. A tree sits atop the shield. The bottom left Norman pointed shield is horizontally lined (azure) with a cross (argent). It is charged with an open book with writing over the center of the cross. A coronet sits atop the shield. The bottom right spade shield is blank (argent) and is charged with an anchor. A mitre sits atop the shield.

16. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso.
17. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font.
18. [Bookplate for Howard] [Bookplate for Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a lion statant guardant standing on a circular platform wrapped in a pointed ribbon decorated with four diamonds. Shield features sable and argent stripes. There is an argent bend featuring a decorative smaller shield that has several geometric borders with a demi-lion rampant in the center. The shield is charged with six crosses, three on each side of the bend. The crosses peter to a thin point at the bottom and the other parts of the cross divide into miniature cross shapes. The shield has dexter and sinister supporters, both lions rampant. The bases of the lions’ neck are decorated with a star. The lions are standing on a curling ribbon that features the motto, printed in capitalized sans serif font. Below the motto is the name of the bookplate owner printed in stylized gothic sentence-case font. Four squiggly arrows point towards the text from each side.
19. [Bookplate for W. Carleill-Hall] [Bookplate for W. Carleill-Hall] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a person’s head in profile facing the left. The person is wearing chain mail, but no helmet and is atop a crest-wreath. Below the crest-wreath is another crest with a gentlemen and esquire helm and elaborate black and white curling mantling extending out horizontally, as well as down the sides of the shield. The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side is argent with a sable chevron. It is charged with three black birds trussed, two over one. The chevron is charged with three white flowers with six petals and line decorations in the middle. The sinister side is sable and charged with three white demi-lions. At the base of the shield is a ribbon with a flat central base and ends that extend up like a V to the left and right. On that central base is printed, black, capitalized, sans serif text. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, cursive text.
20. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font.
