[Bookplate for P. I. P. Sherburne by Elvey] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants, vert (green), are charged with an eagle, displayed. The second and third quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a lion, rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, topped by a unicorn's head, horned and couped. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 162. [Bookplate for George Benson Strutt] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), containing a chevron, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and charged with three cross crosslets fitchy, or (gold). Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, and a cubit arm habited (vert [green] sleeve and ermine cuff) containing a cross crosslet fitchy, argent (silver), and holding a rolled scroll. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 163. [Bookplate for Stetson] In black ink, this bookplate contains an escutcheon, argent (silver), surrounded by a grape vine bordure. The escutcheon contains a scrape, azure (blue), and is charged with two gryphons, at dexter chief and sinister base. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath and a demi-gryphon. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 164. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 165. [Bookplate for James John Joicey] This bookplate is printed on light brown paper with brown ink. It consists of an escutcheon argent (silver), and three diamonds in pale between two endorses in a crosshatch pattern. The escutcheon is charged with a pick-axe at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at three-quarter profile, indicating the status of peer. Upon the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a young man holding a pick-axe and lantern. Radiating from the wreath is elaborate mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Entire crest is contained within a border, with name of bookplate owner at bottom. 166. [Bookplate] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per base. Lower field, vert [Green]. Upper, three pine trees, couped, on a field, argent [White or Silver]. Atop the escutcheon, a helmut of a knight or a baronet, on top of which is a straight wreath, on which stands a cock, close. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 167. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 168. [Bookplate for William Lawson Grant by J. E. H. MacDonald] This bookplate features a wind-blown tree set upon a waving banner containing the originator's motto. It is surrounded with flora, which contains Scottish thistles, maple leaves, a fleur de lis, the number 59, two portraits of men, and the artist's initials. At the top of the design are three escutcheons, all argent (silver) and charged with various elements. 169. [Bookplate for John A. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Above the escutcheon sits a dexter hand, erased, holding a cross crosslet, gules (red), on a vizored helm with mantling. Escutcheon is divided per quarter. The quarterly field near dexter chief is argent (silver) with a lion rampant, gules, and near sinister chief, or (gold), is a dexter hand, erased, holding cross crosslet, gules. The quarterly field near the sinister base displays a fish naiant on water, vert (green), and near the dexter base, argent, is a lymphad in sable (black), azure (blue), and gules. 170. [Bookplate for J. W. Dunbar Moodie] Escutcheon divided per quarterly. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 171. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot] This bookplate's design features an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three roses. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet charged with a dexter hand holding a wreath. Decorative floral surrounds the escutcheon with a banner containing bookplate motto. 172. [Bookplate for Henry Augustus Sims] In red ink on white paper, a border that contains red and black text and black decorative designs. Within the border, in black ink, there is an angled Escutcheon parted per pale. The dexter side is gules (red), containing a chevronel or (gold) with two mullets of six points, pierced, in chief, and one battle axe in base. The sinister side is quartered per cross by a cross argent (silver), with the dexter chief and sinister base quarters in azure (blue) and the sinister chief and dexter base quarters in gules. In each quarter save the sinister base there is a pheon proper. Above the Esctucheon, the mantling is topped by a wreath, from which a lion emerges, holding a battle axe. Below the Escutcheon is a banner bearing the motto, 'Ferio Tego.'. 174. [Bookplate for Arnold William Thomas] In black ink on white paper. Shield: Or (gold), on a fesse dancette sable (black), coticed gules (red), between three birds sable perched, addorsed and elevated. Crest: a bird sable perched, addorsed and elevated, atop an open book argent (silver) and a crest wreath, argent and vert (green) with mantling. 175. [Bookbinder's Tickets] 1) In black ink on cream paper, the ticket consists of an escutcheon with an elaborate base, bearing the name, services, and location of the company. A diadem bears the crest of a Gryphon salient armed, gules, holding an escutcheon Argent, a garter, gules. The escutcheon is surrounded by smoke-like dark shading and the whole is surrounded by a thin black border. 2) In black ink on light blue or gray paper, the ticket consists of an elaborate coin or medallion with trefoils in the four corners, bearing the name and services of the company. An escutcheon in the center of the medallion bears the address of the business. The blunted corners of the ticket result in an octagonal shape. 176. [Bookplate] A coat of arms with mantling: Quarterly, 1st and 4th azure, 2 bars dancetty or, in chief 3 bezants ; 2nd and 3rd azure, a fess engrailed argent, surmounted by another, not engrailed, gules, charged with 3 roses argent, between as many swans, proper. Above the coat of arms are two crests: left is a swan gorged, wings displayed and inverted, on a wreath ; right is a bull at gaze, gorged and on a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a ribbon containing the Latin motto. 177. [Bookplate for William Martin] In black ink on cream paper, a double border surrounding a coat of arms. The coat of arms is Argent two bars Gules six bezants 3 and 3, with ornate mantling especially to the upper right and left of the shield, surrounding the crest of an eagle displayed over a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a draped manner with the Latin motto and below that is the name in a Gothic script. 178. [Bookplate for William Swift Keyser] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features an esquire helm with elaborate mantling extending out along both sides of the bookplate. Extended, feathery wings rise out of the top of the helm. The helm sites directly on the shield, which is divided per pale and per rounded chevron. The three parts of the shield are different colour. The upper left portion is argent, the upper right side portion has vertical sable lines, and the rounded bottom portion has horizontal sable lines. Sitting atop the rounded bottom portion is a king. The man is sitting cross-legged and holds a sword in his left hand and a rounded vessel with a cross on top in his right hand. The man is wearing a crown and a cape. He has long hair and a small beard. Below the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, bold, serif font. Underneath the ribbon, text is printed in sentence case, thin, cursive font followed by a line of small black dots. There is a black ink smudge on the bottom right corner of the bookplate. 179. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The bookplate is a dedication bookplate recognizing a specific collection, as well as the benefactors that rendered it possible for The University of British Columbia to acquire it. The bookplate has no art, symbols, or colour on it, and appears to be only a dedication. 180. [Bookplate by University of British Columbia] The text of the bookplate is framed by 3 black fillets in a rectangular form. On the left and right sides of the frame there are 6 palmetes and on the header and footer of the frame there are 9 palmetes.
