[Bookplate for James Bell] Centered text in black ink, with three fonts. 42. [Bookplate] The text of the bookplate is surrounded by an elaborate border decorated with various religious figures and themes. Angels kneel on either side of the upper corners and face inwards towards a man holding a book and looking outwards from an arch. The sides are decorated with ornate columns, at the bottom of which are crosses and a symbol of the Holy Trinity. Both the top and bottom portions of the border are decorated with stylized curls. The word 'Catholic' is printed in a bold font, and 'Circulating Library' is in a curly stylized Gothic font. The rules of the library are divided from the rest of the text by bars at the top and bottom, and there is a hand symbol pointing to the library's hours of operation at the bottom of the bookplate. The price of the library subscription is given in shillings, dating this to the era of the Canadian pound which was in use until currency decimalization came into force in 1858. 43. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 44. [Bookplate for Joseph Edgar Guimont by Chalifour Ltée Journal “Le Nord”] Blue ink on cream paper. Capitalized, block, sans-serif letters are printed at the top of the bookplate. Below the text is gothic font in sentence case with a thin blue line framing it atop and below. In the center of the bookplate is an image of a right hand reaching out of a cloud to pour oil into an oil lamp with the flame burning. The lamp is elaborately decorated with floral and curlicue embellishments. The lamp sits atop a closed book with the spine facing out. The cloud extends behind the lamp and book as well. A thin blue line separates the image from sentence-case serif font and another thin blue line is below that text. Below the line is thin italicized font and a dotted line. At the bottom of the bookplate is a thin blue line directly above some smaller, sentence-case serif blue font. 45. [Bookplate for Harry E. Jones] Shiny texturized black ink is raised off the white paper. An elaborate border surrounds the central image. The border has two thin black lines on the outside and then has a series of repeating leafy floral shapes. The floral design is quite pointed and recurs in square sections all around the border. At each corner the design points out towards the corner. The inside of the border is surrounded by a thick black line. At the top of the border, an unfurled banner that is wider than the border sites atop of it. Text is printed in capitalized, block serif font. Below the ribbon, within the borders, is a picture of two monks looking at a large book with text and illustrations. One monk is standing in shadow, his back illuminated by the sunlight streaming in from a window outside the frame on the right side of the bookplate. At the forefront is a seated monk, also with his back to the sun, who is holding the book open while the other monk points at a section. The monk is sitting in a wooden chair with small cutout designs on the back. The table is also wooden and is covered with other books and a feather quill in an inkwell. In front of the desk, a large book with a decorative cover rests against the table leg. To the left of the book is a plain vase. At the base of the image, atop the lower portion of the border, is another ribbon featuring text printed in black, sentence case, serif font. 46. [Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed underneath the motto in thin, sentence-case, black, cursive font. 47. [Bookplate for British Association for the Advancement of Science] Red and black ink on white paper. Coat of arms at top. Quartered shield shows English rose, Scottish thistle, Irish clover and Canadian beaver. Text in a bordered circle around shield. Cursive text below. Contributors include British Association. 48. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 49. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 50. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 51. [Bookplate for George T. Turner by H. L. Peckmore] This philatelic bookplate consists of images of eight stamps. Six of the stamps (one elongated stamp in brown ink, two stamps in blue ink, and 3 in red ink) encircle a large circular stamp printed in black ink. At the lower right corner of the bookplate is the eighth stamp, printed in brown ink. Those stamps which are identifiable include: The stamp containing a hand of cards represents a stamp from the New York Consolidated Card Co., in use from 1876 to 1883 ; the stamp of a healthy man assualting a skeleton represents Sc. RS56, from 1880 for William E. Clarke - Hunt's Remedy ; the stamp containing a battleship represents a an issue from the Battleship Series of1898 ; and the stamp containing a bi-plane in the lower right corner represents the 1918 First Airmail Series - 6 Cents Curtiss Jenny. The remaining stamps have not been exactly identified. A circular seal at the lower left corner of the bookplate contains the originator's name and date ; and at the middle base is a rectangular box containing an identification of the library and an image of a set of books between book-ends. To the right can be found the artist's mark, "H. L. Peckmore". H. L. Peckmore & Son is a US printer of philatelic materials. 52. [Bookplate for Charles Eliot Norton] This bookplate consists of a straight heraldic wreath charged with a gryphon. Below the wreath a three books, piled, with a scroll over-top, with Latin motto within. 53. [Bookplate for Robert Edward Lord Petre] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a simple bend, or (gold), charged with two escallop at dexter base and sinister chief. The escutcheon is charged with an inescutcheon at center, divided per cross. Quarter one is gules, with a simple bend, argent (silver), charged with six cross crosslet fitched. Quarter two is gules, charged with three lions. Quarter three is chequy, azure (blue) and argent. Quarter four is gules, charged with a lion rampant. Above the entire escutcheon is a coronet denoting the rank of baron, and supporting the escutcheon at dexter and sinister are two lions rampant reguardant. Beneath the escutcheon s a banner, with Latin motto within, and below motto the bookplate owner's name and title. Background of crest is azure. 54. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 55. [Bookplate for R. J. A. Boreman] In black ink. This bookplate displays a bespectacled man, presumably the originator, reading a book by candle-light. With no tonal variation, he is set-off against a black background, framed with a thin, asymmetrical, ornate border. Above the profile-portrait is the originator's name, and below, his Latin motto and a separate component in which a book number has been stamped in red. 56. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 57. [Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rectangular frame ornamented with garlands. 58. [Bookplate for David Bond and Elizabeth Bond] Bookplate design features an eagle in flight in foreground, with compass in background. Bookplate owner names at base. 59. [Bookplate for Lachlan Gibb] In black ink. This bookplate's design features an escutcheon with or (gold), azure (blue), and sable (black) designs, parted per cross and charged at the fess point with an additional coat of arms. The escutcheon is outlined by an ornate border and situated in the center of a rectangular frame, divided into quadrants. These sections feature a domed building, topped with a cross, a ship, three battle-axes and three beavers, respectively. The originator's Latin motto and name appear along the base of the frame. Above the rectangular design are two straight wreaths charged with a dexter arm vambraced couped, holding aloft a battle-axe and an eagle bearing a tilting spear. 60. [Bookplate for Howard Murray] In black ink on cream coloured paper. This bookplate depicts a sitting room with two chairs and a window looking out on trees, rolling hills and a body of water.
