[Bookplate for Robert Wilson Reford] Bookplate executed in black ink on white paper and consists of text and a simple border. 22. [Bookplate for Iser Steiman M.D. by A. N. T.] Black ink on cream paper. Man, no shoes, chest bare, book hugged against torso with left arm, while right arm holds open a book held at eye level. Sunlight illuminates the man. Deciduous tree in foreground. Hills in background. 23. [Bookplate for Claude Ernest Dolman] Laurel frames a compound optical microscope. Bookplate is on its original adhesive backing. 24. [Bookplate for Leida Eerme and A. Lavdovsky by A. Gastmans] In black ink, horizontally laid flowers including two large blossoms, buds, stems, and leaves. 25. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath] Brown ink on cream paper. Cupboard with an array of ceramic pieces including candle sticks, jugs, bowls and figurines. The text box is centered infront of the cupboard and shield with a tea pot appears on top of the tex box. 26. [Bookplate for R. W. Urwin by Diocese of Durham] At the top of this bookplate, above the text, is the arms of the bishopric of Durham. The escutcheon is azure (blue), and contains an or (gold) cross patonce. Each quadrant of the cross contains a lion rampant. On top of the shield is a bishop's mitre. As the Bishops of Durham were formerly princes of the Palatinate of Durham, this mitre has the unique distinction of also including a ducal coronet which provides for greater heraldic distinction. The bookplate is in letterpress with handwritten inserts. 27. [Bookplate for William Hall Walker by F.] Dense with imagery, this bookplate consists of a central framed coat of arms, surrounded by many symbols and figures, including a rose, a portcullis, a bird, a small argent escutcheon charged with a lion rampant, a thistle, military insignia, mounted hunting spoils, an anchor, rifles, swords, polo mallets, horseracing emblems, horse carriage hook-up, foliage, tree branches, and knights on horseback. The knight on the left sits upon an armored sable horse, holds a lance in his right arm, and wears a cornucopia crested helmet. The knight on the right sits upon a unarmored white horse and holds a white flag in his right hand, on which is the image of a tree and fox on a circular white and azure (blue) background. The coat of arms, presented within a border of grape vines and under the motto 'By Care and Industry', consists of a white horse and stag as supporters, with juxtaposed garbe, proper. The escutcheon, argent, contains both a chief and saltier. The chief is argent (silver), with two argent mullets of six points and garbe, proper. The saltier, argent, is charged with eight seedlings eradicated and a stag's head, erased, at its centre. Atop the shield is a baron's coronet and helmet, grated and in profile, crested by a wreath and cornucopia. 28. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 29. [Bookplate for Sir George Frederick Samuel Robinson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a crest of a stag at gaze, which is upon a small version of a coronet of duke status. Surrounding the crest in a circular orientation is a garter of azure (blue), with French motto within. Surrounding the garter is a heraldic collar, with twelve roses (surrounded by circular garters with French motto within) at regular intervals. Upon the collar is a full version of a coronet of duke status, and immediately below the collar (as a pendant) is a rendering of the biblical event of St. George slaying the dragon. 30. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 31. [Bookplate for William Molesworth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an annexed escutcheon, vair (argent [silver] and azure [blue]), with a martlet at the honour point ; and an inescutcheon, argent with a sinister hand, couped and gules (red) at the fess point. Baronets of the United Kingdom bear the red hand of Ulster. The escutcheon's bordure is gules, and contains eight cross crosslets, or (gold), three over two over three. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet of a baronet, front facing with beaver open. The helmet is crested by a curved wreath and a a sinister arm, vambraced, and holding a cross crosslet, or. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 32. [Bookplate for Charles Eliot Norton] This bookplate consists of a straight heraldic wreath charged with a gryphon. Below the wreath a three books, piled, with a scroll over-top, with Latin motto within. 33. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 34. [Bookplate for Cosmo Nevill] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with a saltier, ermine (fur, white powdered with black tufts). Quarters two and three are argent (silver), with a fretty of eight pieces, gules. Quarters two and three have a canton at dexter chief, divided per pale, or (gold) and argent, charged with a galley with three masts. Above the primary escutcheon is a grated helmet at three-quarters profile (denoting a degree of peerage under a duke). Above the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a ducal coronet around an ox head, erased and ermine. Radiating from the helmet and escutcheon is elaborate mantling. Beneath the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 35. [Bookplate for Basil Woodd Smith] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an ovular garter as bordure around the originator's name. The Latin motto is present on the garter. 36. [Bookplate for George Wilbraham] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per pale, the sinister half azure, a bend, argent, engrailed, two bendlets, or, on either side. The dexter half parted per cross. The first and fourth quarters, argent, bendy of seven, argent and azure. The second and third quarters, barry of five, argent and azure, a canton, sable, with a wolf. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a wolf. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 37. [Bookplate for George Wilkins] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two swords saltier, and on a chief argent (silver) are three mullets pierced, sable (black). Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a demi-gryphon, rampant, regardant, segreant, gules, holding aloft a sword. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 38. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 39. [Bookplate for George Murray Humphry] Bookplate design consists of text with lined border surrounding. 40. [Bookplate for Winfred Overholser] This bookplate's design is a pictoral scene of a tall ship at sea, with gales of wind blowing at the sails and water. Bookplate text at base.
