[Bookplate for Hill’s Library] Black ink on cream paper. Handwritten notes across at the top of the bookplate in the center and right corner. Typewritten bold capital letters in serif font followed by smaller non-bold letters. The line below features bold font in sentence case. A thin black line with a thicker rectangle in the middle separates text. Text below the line is large, capital, bold font. The following line is in smaller sentence case. The next line of text is in capital, non-bold font. A thin line with two small diamonds and one large diamond in the center separate the text. Below the line is italicized capital sans serif font. Underneath that is smaller, bold sans serif font. Lending periods written on the right side of the bookplate in italicized sentence case serif font. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 4. [Bookplate for Hill’s Library] Black ink on yellowing paper. Typewritten text in capital letters and bold followed by sentence case letters in varying serif font sizes. There is a thin line with stylized dots in the centre separating text. Below the line, text is written in large, capitalized, bold serif font. Below that is text written in bold, sentence case. Text is then written in non-bold capital letters. There is a thicker, stylized line with three dots in the centre separating text. Below the line is text written in capital sans serif font, followed by text in smaller, bold sans serif font. Further text is right aligned and written in italicized serif font. Text is then written in capital and sentence case serif font in multiple sizes with section separated by dots. Graphic of hand with index finger pointing right is next to capital, sans serif font. A squared squiggled line is below the finger graphic and above faded text in serif font. Below that is serif font in capital letters and then bold serif font in bold letters. Handwritten notes cover some of the typewritten text on the right side of the bookplate until approximately halfway down the bookplate. The bottom two corners of the bookplate have been cut off. The bookplate appears to be printed on top of a newspaper or magazine clipping, the recto of which is slightly visible through the bookplate. Black ink serif font text and some imagery are visible. The verso of the bookplate is clearly the other printed side of the magazine or newspaper with serif fonts in bold capital letters and non-bold sentence case letters. The recto of the original print is also slightly visible from the verso side. 5. [Bookplate for W.H. Smith & Son] Printed in black ink on purple paper, this textual bookplate is framed by a single-lined border in which a circled design is place in each corner. Affixed by a paper clip to the top right corner is a square, white stamp printed in black ink. Its text is: Finsbury London / Institution, Circus. E. 642 21 days. 6. [Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed underneath the motto in thin, sentence-case, black, cursive font. 7. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on white paper, with a peel and stick feature. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion standing on a wreath, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion holds aloft the maple leaf and looks out from his frame which is surrounded by more maple leaves in a double frame. The lion's position, with the dexter forepaw raised and head turned to face the viewer, is known as passant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 8. [Bookplate for Dundas Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on grey paper. [Bookplate for Drysdale’s Lending Library by W. Drysdale & Co.] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border surrounds text printed in multiple fonts. The book number is left blank. 12. [Bookplate for Wm. Read] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale gules (red) and argent (silver). The first half is charged with a bend wavy, charged with three birds. The second is charged with a chevron, with three roundlets, or (gold), one over two. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a bird. Between the wreath and escutcheon is a garter, and in place of mantling, stylized tree branches radiate from behind the escutcheon. The base of the tree continues below the escutcheon, and two banners are placed at the forefront. The first banner has Latin motto within, the second, bookplate owner's name. 13. [Bookplate for Lacombe Vincent by Carles Imprint Editor] Pictorial bookplate. An illustrated border surrounds text in the center. Angels are on the top right and left hand corners. The left side angel holds a wreath in one hand and the right side angel holds a book in one hand. The angels also hold a banner that stretches between them with the name of the awarding organization on it. Below the angels is a border of morning glories. The plants meet at the bottom center of the plate, growing from beneath a pile of books and a globe.
