[Bookplate for Catholic Commercial Academy of Montreal, Wm Price, and U. E. Archambault by Geo. E. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 22. [Bookplate for Hopital Général d’Ottawa] Black ink on cream paper. The bookplate features a border consisting of thick, black wavy lines with arrows on the ends of each line pointing towards the corner. Each corner has three diamonds shaped in a triangle. Inside the border, there is a circular image with a border of two interwoven black wavy lines. Inside that border is capitalized text printed in bold, black, sans serif front. In the center of the circle is a cross coming out of the ground wrapped in vines. Above and below the cross are two ribbons with mottos printed in capitalized, black, sans serif front. At the bottom of the bookplate, outside of the circular design, but inside the first border, is text printed in capitalized, black, serif font. 23. [Bookplate for Frank Marx Etting] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a chevron, gules (red). On the chevron are three roundlets, argent. The escutcheon is bordered by mantling, and crested by a dexter cubit arm holding a sword. Impaled on the sword is a boar's head. The boar's head is said to represent unflinching courage and fierceness on the battlefield. In Irish literature, it was symbolic of aggression and savegery, and symbolized the Devil. 24. [Bookplate for George T. Turner by H. L. Peckmore] This philatelic bookplate consists of images of eight stamps. Six of the stamps (one elongated stamp in brown ink, two stamps in blue ink, and 3 in red ink) encircle a large circular stamp printed in black ink. At the lower right corner of the bookplate is the eighth stamp, printed in brown ink. Those stamps which are identifiable include: The stamp containing a hand of cards represents a stamp from the New York Consolidated Card Co., in use from 1876 to 1883 ; the stamp of a healthy man assualting a skeleton represents Sc. RS56, from 1880 for William E. Clarke - Hunt's Remedy ; the stamp containing a battleship represents a an issue from the Battleship Series of1898 ; and the stamp containing a bi-plane in the lower right corner represents the 1918 First Airmail Series - 6 Cents Curtiss Jenny. The remaining stamps have not been exactly identified. A circular seal at the lower left corner of the bookplate contains the originator's name and date ; and at the middle base is a rectangular box containing an identification of the library and an image of a set of books between book-ends. To the right can be found the artist's mark, "H. L. Peckmore". H. L. Peckmore & Son is a US printer of philatelic materials. 25. [Bookplate for Vincent Stuckey] In black in, this bookplate consists of and escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter half is divided per bend sinister, or (gold), azure (blue) and dove-tailed, and charged with a lion, rampant and ermine with a tail queue fourché. At the dexter chief of the half is an azure canton charged with a mascle, or. The sinister half of the escutcheon is identical to the dexter, except that at it also contains a crescent at middle chief. The escutcheon is crested by a straight crest wreath and a demi-lion with tail queue fourché, ermine and charged with a mascle, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 26. [Bookplate for National Gallery of Canada Library by Alfred H. Howard] Burgundy ink on cream paper. Three young boys respectively engaged in painting, drawing and sculpting are enclosed by a large circle, at the center of which lies an open book. The entire bookplate is surrounded by a multi-layered border. The artist's remarque is in the lower right hand corner of the border. 27. [Bookplate for Ecole polytechnique] In black ink on thick pink paper with visible laid lines. Image includes a rectangular decorative border consisting of straight lines at the sides and more elaborate patterns in the corners surrounding 20 lines of text. 28. [Bookplate for J. Rumsey] Printed in black ink, a simple linear border with sparsely set flowers surrounds the text. The seal in the center of the bookplate displays an image of the Calvary Church. 29. [Bookplate for Cavalry Church] Printed in black ink, an ornate border surrounds the text. The seal in the center of the bookplate displays an image of the Calvary Church. 30. [Bookplate for J. G. Chilcott] The text is in the centre of the bookplate, surrounded by a vine-like border. Four small flowers are in each corner of the border. The text 'TRURO' is bolded. 31. [Bookplate for Union des Commis-Marchands] Text is printed in a numbered list, surrounded by a line border resembling chain. 32. [Bookplate for Gamble Geddes] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features half a fish hauriant showing a fin, gills, and a head with teeth atop a crest-wreath. Sable shield charged with three of the aforementioned fish heads two over one and an argent insecutcheon. There is a ribbon-like banner with the motto below the shield with curling ends. Each side of the ribbon is angled towards a downward point. On the left side is text in capitalized black serif-font. The right side of the ribbon overlaps the left and has text in the same font. Below the motto, the owner’s name is written in curling sentence-case font. 33. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 34. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 35. [Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font.
