[Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 2. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 3. [Bookplate for Alfred Hawksworth] Red ink on cream colored paper. A thin border in an alternating pattern of three-leaf clovers (trefoil) with a stem and simple curlicues. Border houses the name and number of the bookplate. 4. [Bookplate for Andrew Allan] In black ink on red paper, this bookplate features an ornate border surrounding text in the center. 5. [Bookplate for Arthur Coburn by L. J. R.] The image is of a man standing between two deciduous trees. The man has black hair and is wearing antique garments from the Italian Renaissance and white tights. He is also reading a large black book and has a small black leather belt and pouch. The whole image is surrounded by a double filleted black border. 6. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] All printed markings in blue ink, all manuscript notes in black ink. Thin lines form a vertical rectangle with three vertically-stacked cells. The top cell contains the name of the library. The middle cell contains the seal of the institute: two concentric rings with the name and dates of the institute surrounding the inner circle, which contains a Star of David surrounding some Hebrew text. The seal has been inverted, so that it appears as white markings in a blue square. The bottom cell contains a space for presentation notes. In the last cell and above the outermost frame are manuscript notes. 7. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] All printed markings in blue ink and all manuscript notes in black ink. Thin lines form a vertical rectangle with three vertically-stacked cells. The top cell contains the name of the library. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] This bookplate is in two parts: One to show ownership by the library, the other to show who made the presentation of the book to the library. 1) In black ink on white or cream paper. The bookplate consists of lines for recording location information, the seal of the institute [two concentric rings with the name and dates of the institute surrounding the inner circle, which contains a Star of David surrounding some Hebrew text], and other lines for noting the number and receipt date of the book surrounding the library name. 2) In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding black text. 9. [Bookplate for Burton’s Limited Circulating Library] In black ink on tan paper. A simple border frames the text. 10. [Bookplate for David Russell Jack] Black ink on cream paper with shiny surface. The crest features an armoured arm clutching a sword extending from a crest-wreath. Below is an esquires helm, from which extends mantling on either side. The mantling is light on top and darkens to black at the bottom. The shield is has a chevron with thin, horizontal, black lines. Above the chevron, the shield is charged with two crescent moons with the points facing upwards. Below the chevron, the shield is charged with the same arm from the crest, in this case tilted 90 degrees so that the arm is horizontal. While the crest arm holds a straight sword, the shield arm is holding a sword with a curved blade. Below the shield, the motto is printed in capitalized, black, block serif font on a curling ribbon. Underneath the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in larger, black, sentence case cursive font. A second line features the date printed in smaller, thin, stylized black font. 11. [Bookplate for Davidson] The bookplate is an armorial. At the crest there is a couped eagle's head armed above a wreath. The shield is an azure shield with thistles in the dexter chief and sinister chief position. An argent banner across the fess holds a couchant stagg facing dexter. The base of the shield has a thistle in the precise middle. 12. [Bookplate for Drysdale’s Lending Library by W. Drysdale & Co.] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border surrounds text printed in multiple fonts. The book number is left blank. 13. [Bookplate for Dufferin School John Frothingham Library] Printed in navy ink, a geometric border with ornate corners surrounds the text of multiple fonts. The coat of arms of Montreal is raised in blue with accompanying banners. The shield is topped with a crown and features a red saltire with four different charges between the arms: a rose, thistle, clover, and beaver. The bookplate includes a watermark. Beneath the coat of arms is a blank space with a number handwritten in grey ink, followed by the title of the school and a note on the school’s history. 14. [Bookplate for Dunham Methodist Sunday School] Black ink on cream paper. A thin, vine-like border houses the text. No content lies outside of this border. Inside, the name of the school library is centered in the upper portion. A fillable number section is located in the central portion, with the number 216 erased out and the number 56 written to the right of it in blue ink. Beneath this section is a small printed hand icon pointing towards a note instructing the user of the library usage policy. In the portion of this note for the librarian to write the number of days until it’s due is written the number 14 in pencil. 15. [Bookplate for Ernest E. Goodwin] Black ink on cream paper. Argent, per pale, left hand side per cross. First quadrant on left hand side has speckled background. Square in upper left hand corner charged with three speckled roundels two on three. Charged with two lions passant guardant. Design is repeated in the fourth quadrant. Second quadrant has argent chief charged with three sable stars. Below the chief is sable charged with displayed bird mirrored vertically. Design is repeated in third quadrant. Middle third right hand side is sable charged with three fleurs-de-lis. Crest of demi-lion rampant guardant holding in its forepaws a circle with speckled interior on crest-wreath. Motto featured in capital letters on ribbon banner with curled ends. Name written in typewritten cursive sentence case. 16. [Bookplate for Évêché de St. Hyacinthe] Handwritten note in black ink above the bookplate. Black ink on pale grey paper with some discolouration. Solid border surrounded externally and internally by thin outlines inside an intertwined double-lined spiral border. Text written in capital and sentence case bold letters. 17. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.' The post is standing in a marsh. 18. [Bookplate for Frederick Claude Vivian Lane and Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print. In black, blue, nude, red and white ink. Image of birds in water with a fire in a basket at top left and (possibly) a boat top right. 19. [Bookplate for Gairdner] Printed in black ink on cream paper. In the centre of the bookplate, a family shield depicts an ‘X’ contained within a diamond, which is surrounded on all sides by eight trefoils with stems. At the top of the shield, a stylized iron helmet with a visor is framed on both sides by elaborate scrolling leaves. Above this, a demi-leopard is shown rampant (in profile, rearing, with its front paws in the air). Below the shield, a banner displays a motto in Latin. 20. [Bookplate for Herbert Fairbairn Gardiner] Black ink on cream paper. Thin black border surrounds the text and image on the bookplate. At the top of the bookplate, within the border, is printed black gothic text. Below the text is a portrait photograph of the bookplate owner showing a balding white man with a large moustache in a black suit with a white shirt and bow tie. The photograph has a thin black border. Below the photograph is large, black, sentence case font.
