[Bookplate for Earl Gower by Griffiths and Weigall] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is supported by two wolves rampant. Upon the escutcheon is a crown of earl status (minus the internal cap). Above the escutcheon is a crest of a wolf passant upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. 42. [Bookplate for Lionel Damer] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided barry of six pieces, nebule, argent (silver) and gules (red), and a bend, engrailed, azure (blue). At the precise middle chief is a crescent, the symbol of the second son. The escutcheon also contains an inescutcheon, divided per cross. The first quadrant, argent, contains an unknown symbol, possibly a garbe, sable (black). The fourth quadrant, also argent, contains two of the same symbol. The second quadrant, divided per fess, or (gold) and azure (blue), contains two swans with wings displayed. The third quadrant is the same, except it contains only a single swan. The crest is an oval frame containing a talbot's head in a crown. Above the crest is floral mantling which extends down both sides of the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 43. [Bookplate for Edgell Wyatt-Edgell] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and containing an inescutcheon. The first and forth quadrants of the escutcheon are sable (black) with a fess, dancette and argent (silver), three eagles displayed, two over one and or (gold), and chief, or. The second and third quadrants are argent, with a sable chevron containing three roundlets bezant (gold), and cinque foil, two over one and gules (red). The inescutcheon is checky, or and gules, and contains a lion rampant guardant. Atop the escutcheon is a dexter helmet, closed with mantling flowing horizontally from its top. Above the mantling are two further crests. The dexter consists of a demi-lion rampant, embattled in or and sable, on a wreath, holding an inverted arrow in its dexter paw. The sinister crest consists of a demi-lion rampant on a wreath, holding the long stem of a cinque foil, gules, in both its paws. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 44. [Bookplate for John Wingfield Larking] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, ermine, charged with three heads of wildcats, possibly lions. Above the escutcheon is a closed helmet, placed in profile, denoting the rank of an esquire or a gentleman, from which, elaborate mantling flows. Upon the helmet is a curved wreath, with a crest of a bird, wings elevated and displayed, holding a branch in its beak. 45. [Bookplate for Ferdinand I Czar of Bulgaria] In black ink, this complex bookplate contains an escutcheon divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants contain a lion, salient and crowned (it is unclear what colour these quadrants would be due to the printing process) ; the second quadrant, argent (silver) contains two pallets, likely sable (black), and a sable chief charged with two crowns, argent, possibly signifying eastern or celestial crowns ; and the third quadrant, argent, contains two manche facing one another, with arms and hands emerging, together holding a crown. At the fess point is an inescutcheon, which bears the coat of arms of Saxony ; barry of ten pieces, or (gold) and sable, with a garter (vert), floral invection on sinister side. The escutcheon is crested by a royal crown framed by a circular halo. The escutcheon is supported by two lions, wearing royal crowns, each also framed by a circular halo. From around the waist of each lion descends a collar which meets at the nombril point below the escutcheon ; from this point hangs the Grand Cross Of The Order Of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. At either side of the order is a banner containing the originator's designation. Above the crest and supporters are two sets of fleur-de-lis, two over one, signifying the House of Bourbon ; and an additional banner. 46. [Bookplate for John Lechmere] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a fess, or (gold). Above the fess at dexter and sinister chief, the escutcheon is charged with two birds, possibly pelicans, wings addorsed and inverted. Above the escutcheon is a ducal crown without a cap, which is charged with the same bird, wings addorsed and inverted. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto inside. 47. [Bookplate for Almeric Hugh Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Above the escutcheon is a capless-crown denoting baron status, and above the crown is a peer helmet, positioned three-quarters, with mantling radiation from it and surrounding the escutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. At dexter and sinister are two men, each holding a flag charged with a cross patee. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire arms is another banner, with bookplate owner's name and title. 48. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 49. [Bookplate for George Wilbraham] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per pale, the sinister half azure, a bend, argent, engrailed, two bendlets, or, on either side. The dexter half parted per cross. The first and fourth quarters, argent, bendy of seven, argent and azure. The second and third quarters, barry of five, argent and azure, a canton, sable, with a wolf. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a wolf. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 50. [Bookplate for Henry Christopher Wise] In black ink. No escutcheon. A straight crest wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, holding a damask rose, stalked leaved and seeded, in the mouth a snake that is entwined about the body. 51. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 52. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 53. [Bookplate for Nanticoke Public Library] Bookplate format is text within a solid border. 54. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 55. [Bookplate for John Charles Alison Heriot by Graham Johnston] This bookplate's design features, in black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged on the fess with three cinque foils within an indented bordure. Above the escutcheon is a tilting helmet, charged with a straight wreath and a dexter hand couped at the wrist, which holds a laurel wreath aloft. Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. The bookplate designer's initials and the date of creation are hidden among the mantling. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 56. [Bookplate for Frank Louis Flight] In light gray ink. A banner with the name of the owner and a small, circular, profile portrait are displayed on a background of vines. The stylized flora seems inspired by the late Nineteenth-century work of William Morris and others. 57. [Bookplate for J. W. Dunbar Moodie] Escutcheon divided per quarterly. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 58. [Bookplate for Marguerite H. Powter by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink printed on yellow paper. A woman in fanciful dress leans over a cherubic figure who is holding an open book. Books are scattered on the floor, below which is the bookplate owner's name. The entire scene is framed by vines and flowers. 59. [Bookplate for Arthur Richard Springett] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Gules (red) party per fess wavy with three crescents, two over one, Argent (silver). The closed, barred helm in profile toward the dexter half bears a crest of a displayed eagle upon a nowed snake in a figure eight and a straight wreath. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'MEMOR ET FIDELIS' [Latin: Mindful and Faithful]. 60. [Bookplate for Gerald Lynham Porte Grant-Suttie] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield Azure (blue), three eagles displayed two over one, a chief, Or (gold), a demi-lion rampant queue fourche. Issuing out of a Crown Vallary, the crest of a demi-lion rampant queue fourche and holding in the forepaws a star of seven points.
