[Bookplate] A coat of arms with mantling: Quarterly, 1st and 4th azure, 2 bars dancetty or, in chief 3 bezants ; 2nd and 3rd azure, a fess engrailed argent, surmounted by another, not engrailed, gules, charged with 3 roses argent, between as many swans, proper. Above the coat of arms are two crests: left is a swan gorged, wings displayed and inverted, on a wreath ; right is a bull at gaze, gorged and on a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a ribbon containing the Latin motto. 2. [Bookplate for R. W. Urwin by Diocese of Durham] At the top of this bookplate, above the text, is the arms of the bishopric of Durham. The escutcheon is azure (blue), and contains an or (gold) cross patonce. Each quadrant of the cross contains a lion rampant. On top of the shield is a bishop's mitre. As the Bishops of Durham were formerly princes of the Palatinate of Durham, this mitre has the unique distinction of also including a ducal coronet which provides for greater heraldic distinction. The bookplate is in letterpress with handwritten inserts. 3. [Bookplate for J. J. Girouard] Black ink on grey paper. Desbarats] Black ink on white paper. The border of the bookplate comprises three layers: the outermost is an abstract floral motif on the four corners ; secondly is a geometric pattern of triangles ; the innermost layer is a plain line. Curlicues surround the words “Catholic” and “of Montreal.” The bookplate is a pre-printed form with space for the prize name, winner, year and date to be filled out. 7. [Bookplate for Thomas Venables Scudamore] Lion's gamb from a crest-coronet. Helm is Gentlemen and Esquires. Three stirrups. Motto of scuto amoris divini is possibly a play on the family name scut + amor = Scudamor. 8. [Bookplate for Charles Eliot Norton] This bookplate consists of a straight heraldic wreath charged with a gryphon. Below the wreath a three books, piled, with a scroll over-top, with Latin motto within. 9. [Bookplate for William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-FitzWilliam by John Vinycomb] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon framed by a solid bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants are lozengy, argent (silver) and gules (red) ; second and third quadrants are sable (black) with an or (gold) chevron, and three lion heads, two over one. The escutcheon is crested by a large earl's coronet. Above the coronet are two additional crests ; the dexter consists of a helm, sinister and grated, crowned by what appears to be a duke's coronet, and elaborate mantling ; the sinsister consists of a helm, dexter and grated, topped by a curved wreath, a gryphon passant, and elaborate mantling. The escutcheon and bordure are supported by a male "savage" on either side. In heraldry, the "savage" is a symbol of wildness and purity. Both figures are bearded and nude, except for a wreath of leaves to cover their middle section. Both figures hold a tree trunk. The dexter figure, who appears younger, holds the trunk with his right arm and it descends behind him. The sinister figure, who appears older, holds the trunk with his left arm and it descends in front of him. The escutcheon and the figures rest on a mantel, which is draped with a banner containing the Latin motto. From the mantel hang three medals ; the medal on the left represents the Order of the British Empire, the medal in the centre represents the Royal Victorian Order, and the medal on the right represents the Distinguished Service Order. 10. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 11. [Bookplate for Francis Lawson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a chippendale styled escutcheon, argent (silver) parted per pale ; first, argent, with a saltier, azure (blue), the upper part charged with three garbs, the lower a boar's head, and at dexter and sinister an etoile each ; second, argent, depicting a wolf salient, climbing a tree, vert (green), possibly oak. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a boar's head and below the escutcheon the name and location of the bookplate's owner. The entire escutcheon and accompanying text are surrounded by elaborate chippendale borders. 12. [Bookplate for John Keeling] This heraldic bookplate consists of a Chippendale-styled escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a lion rampant. The lion holds an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is crested by a demi-lion atop a mural coronet, again holding an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is bordered by a decorative floral design, and at dexter, a dragon is positioned at the upper half. Flowers are present on the opposite side. Below the escutcheon, but within the floral design, the Latin motto is featured in a banner. 13. [Bookplate for John Leveson Gower] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is charged with an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a human hand, gules, at centre, which is a symbol of knighthood or baronet. Upon the escutcheon is a grated helmet positioned three-quartered, indicating peer (duke, baron, marquess, earl) status. Upon the helmet is a crest of a mountain lion or wolf, upon a straight wreath. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and beneath the escutcheon is the bookplate text within an embellished border. 14. [Bookplate for Frances Mary Richardson Currer] This heraldic bookplate consists of a stylized escutcheon, with a pale counterchanged per fess. Sections one and six are parted per cross, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chief argent (silver), charged with three lions erased. Quarters two and three consists of a barry of eight ermine and azure (blue), with a chief azure, charged with a lion passant guardant. Section two is azure, with a simple bend or (gold), charged with two heads of a stag. Section three is azure, with a bend engrailed and or, charged with three martlets. Section four is ermine, with a cross engrailed and sable. Finally, section five is vert (green), with a bordure engrailed and or, charged with a stag's head. Below the entire escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 15. [Bookplate for Schuyler Merritt] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, a barry of six, or (gold) and sable (black), with a bend, ermine (white powdered fur, black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a helmet in profile (denoting status of esquire and gentleman). Above the helmet is a curved wreath charged with a chained beast passant. Surrounding the escutcheon is a circular banner, with Latin motto within. The entire crest is situated in a rectangular frame filled with foliage-like mantling in the upper half and a row of books directly below the escutcheon. An open book, three open flowers, and a banner with "EX LIBRIS" are situated in the foreground in front of the volumes. 16. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 17. [Bookplate for Thomas Leland] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), with a fess, sable (black). The fess is charged with a lion passant, and an escallop on either side. The upper part of the escutcheon is charged with three sheaves of wheat, with three stocks apiece. Upon the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a gryphon, possibly an opinicus, with wings elevated and addorsed. In the creature's beak are three stocks of wheat. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 18. Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. At sinister is a unicorn rampant, also charged with a label, as well as a royal crown without the cap as a collar. Below the escutcheon is a ribbon, with second German motto within.
