[Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.' This bookplate adheres to the design described above by the RHSC, though the 'honourable augmentation,' of the Canadian crest in dexter chief, does not appear in this escutcheon. 2. [Bookseller's Ticket for J. T. Brousseau] A rectangular ticket, in black ink on blue paper. 3. [Bookseller's Ticket for J. T. Brousseau] Printed in black in on blue paper, this bookplate has an ornate border surrounding the text. 4. [Bookplate] In brown ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding brown text, with the name of the company/library in a Roman-style font. 5. [Bookplate for Carnegie Library of Ottawa] There are two solid, black line borders around the text. The bookplate is printed in black ink, and the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' are printed in red ink in a Gothic script. Two thin black lines separate the words 'Carnegie Library of Ottawa' from the 'library rules' text. 6. [Bookseller's Tickets for Chapman's Book Store] 1) In metallic gold ink on black glossy paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of plain text with no border or decoration. 2) In metallic gold ink on black matte paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a gold border surrounding gold text. 7. [Bookplate for Fiction Inn Circulating Library] Printed in black ink, the text discloses terms of use for the circulating library. Includes pre-printed form for checking in/out books. One and a partial date are visible, stamped in blue ink. 8. [Bookplate for Maurie Barrett] Printed in black ink on white paper, with a peel and stick feature. The image is a version of the crest of the Arms of Canada. It shows a crowned lion standing on a wreath, with mouth open and tongue extended. The lion holds aloft the maple leaf and looks out from his frame which is surrounded by more maple leaves in a double frame. The lion's position, with the dexter forepaw raised and head turned to face the viewer, is known as passant guardant. The lion's tail is flamboyant and resembles the mantling often found on heraldic bookplates. 9. [Bookplate for McIntosh Art Gallery by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream paper. White ivy border over stippled black background. Names of John Gordon McIntosh and Wilhelmina Morris McIntosh inscribed on facing pages of book, behind which is a lit torch whose rays span out from the center of the plate. The text of the plate is on a scroll which is woven around a lyre, a symbol of harmony. 10. [Bookseller's Ticket for John Mercier McMullen] In black ink on blue paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a triple border with decorative corners surrounding black text in roman and italic type. The bottom right corner of the bookseller's ticket has been ripped away and replaced with white paper. 11. [Bookplate for Drysdale’s Lending Library by W. Drysdale & Co.] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border surrounds text printed in multiple fonts. The book number is left blank. 12. [Bookplate for Thomas B. Greening] Printed in black ink on cream paper. In the centre of the image, a heraldic shield is depicted. The shield is decorated by two thick intersecting lines with reversed scalloped edges, forming a cross shape. The lines are incised with a pattern of thin, close-set vertical lines and contrast against a solid background. Below the shield, a banner with chevron-ed edges contains the phrase ‘A TOUTE FORCE.’ Above the shield, the head and neck of a horse is shown in profile, facing left, with its mouth open and mane flowing. 13. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 14. [Bookplate by Colonist Lithography] In black ink on cream paper. The top center contains the coat of arms, flanked by elaborate leafy scrollwork. In the center is text in multiple bold fonts identifying the book number and library number (with gray rectangles where these numbers were handwritten). The bottom third contains the small text rules. Surrounding everything are two thin borders, between which, on the bottom edge, is the name of the lithographer. 15. Beneath the coat of arms is a blank space with a number handwritten in grey ink, followed by the title of the school and a note on the school’s history. 20. [Bookplate] This royal bookplate, in black ink, contains two shields surrounded by a border of floral branches and elaborately twisting rope. The dexter shield represents the Arms of the ducs de Berry (after 1376). This shield, azure (blue), with an embattled bordure, gules (red) is charged with three fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The sinister shield represents the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
