Depiction of a sloped road, an inn, and Brock’s Monument, a 56-metre column dedicated to Major General Sir Isaac Brock, a Canadian war hero from the War of 1812. 162. [Bookplate by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper, depicting a satyr playing reed pipes in a field with some flowers, surrounded by wildlife (moose, rabbit, squirrel, beaver, birds). There is a forest and water nearby, and signs of human life (tent, canoe). Pictured within a circular frame, with ribbon and text, and a crow standing on a branch at the very top looking down. 163. [Bookplate for Mary Katharine Black by Thoreau MacDonald] This pictorial engraving was created using black ink on white paper and portrays an island with two wind-swept trees with a rising/setting sun on the horizon. 164. [Bookplate for W.H. Smith & Son] Printed in black ink on purple paper, this textual bookplate is framed by a single-lined border in which a circled design is place in each corner. Affixed by a paper clip to the top right corner is a square, white stamp printed in black ink. Its text is: Finsbury London / Institution, Circus. E. 642 21 days. 165. [Bookplate for Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire] Purple ink on white paper. Seal of IODE at top. Text below. Border consists of three fine lines at top and bottom and a single fine line at the sides. 166. [Bookplate for Macdonald Bridges] This bookplate consists of an argent escutcheon divided by a sable (black) cross. At the centre of the cross is a small lion's head. Atop the three-pointed shield is a small crest wreath on which rests a voyageur-type human figure, couped. Above the image is a banner containing the French motto. Below the shield is a tree, or bush, which grows up both sides of the shield, resembling heraldic mantling. 167. [Bookplate for Felix Carbray] This bookplate consists of a an ornamental escutcheon, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), charged with a lion rampant, gules (red). The crest consists of a dexter helm, topped by a curved wreath and dexter cubit arm holding a sword. From either side of the crest extends elaborate mantling which flows down to the base of the shield where a banner is located, containing the Irish motto: "DIA A'S CEART." Translates to "God's Right" (as in His right to rule). 168. [Bookplate for Frank Marx Etting] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a chevron, gules (red). On the chevron are three roundlets, argent. The escutcheon is bordered by mantling, and crested by a dexter cubit arm holding a sword. Impaled on the sword is a boar's head. The boar's head is said to represent unflinching courage and fierceness on the battlefield. In Irish literature, it was symbolic of aggression and savegery, and symbolized the Devil. 169. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 170. [Bookplate for Maria Anna Grimaldi] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), charged with three esquire helmets, sable (black), en profile at fess, and a lion passant below. Above the escutcheon is an esquire helmet, above which is a crest of an armoured arm embowed clutching a curtana, or a pointless sword of mercy. The escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate mantling, and the entire crest by a stylized border. Below the heraldic image is the Latin text. 171. [Bookplate for Edward Loveden] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bend, cottised vert (green) and sable (black). The escutcheon is charged with four sinister hands, roughly at centre chief, sinister, dexter, and centre base. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a heraldic tiger, sejant (sitting position). 172. [Bookplate for E. Kimber and L. Kimber] In black ink, an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three martlets, and containing a chief, sable (black), with three mullets, argent. A wreath crest with a tearful ox couped affronté. Banner located below escutcheon contains Latin motto. 173. [Bookplate for Henry Gilbert Wintle] In black ink. No escutcheon. Straight crest wreath charged with a stag, lodged, proper, on grass, with a three-leaved twig in its mouth. 174. [Bookplate] In black ink. Argent [White or Silver], charged with an oak tree. On a fess, azure [Blue], a crescent, between two molets. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath on which is a cubit arm, erect, issuing from a cloud, in the hand a branch of olive, all proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 175. [Bookplate for University of Alberta] Bookplate design consists of University of Alberta arms, latin motto and text in green ink. 176. [Bookplate for Thomas Aylwin] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per fess, barry nebuly of three, argent [white] and gules [red]. Three lions, rampant, sable [black], two over one. Above the escutcheon is mantling, on which sits a curved crest wreath and a paw, erased, sable, within a Mural crown proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 177. [Bookplate for Academy of Medicine] In black ink. A burning oil lamp above an open book with words on both pages. Below is a banner containing the Latin motto. 178. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 179. [Bookplate for Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an academic escutcheon in the heraldic-style. The escutcheon is parted per fess, indented, in chief gules (red), charged with two open books with initialled text. These charges mimic the two books found on the University of Toronto's crest. On the fess, argent (silver), appears a maple bough with three leaves. Though situated differently, this symbol may be drawn from the maple bough with three leaves which appears on the coat of arms of the province of Ontario. The base, azure (blue), is charged with a lamp of knowledge. Above the escutcheon is a crown, which resembles that of George IV, also found on the coat of arms of the University. The crown was included in the University crest to indicate the provision of the institution's royal charter by George IV in 1827. Surrounding the escutcheon is a banner containing the name of the university faculty which issued the bookplate. The illustration identifies itself as an "Ex Libris" and below, cites the originating library. The text and illustration are surrounded by a rectangular frame ornamented with garlands. 180.
