[Bookplate for William Craig] This bookplate consists of a gules (red) bordered escutcheon with a single bar, azure (blue), on an ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts) background. The bar is charged with three crescents. Atop the shield is a helm, and mantling which surrounds the entire shield. The helm is crested by a curved wreath and knight on horseback, with broken lance. A broken lance represents the celebration of winning a point during a jousting tournament. 42. [Bookplate for Sir W. G. Gordon Cumming] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon braced between two white horse supporters. The escutcheon is quartered and counter-charged. Two quarters contain three garbes on an azure (blue) background, two over one. The other two quarters contain three garters, sable (black), charged with three roses each, on an argent (silver) background. The shield also contains an inescutcheon charged with a coat of arms. Atop the escutcheon is a helm and mantling. The helm is crested by a curved wreath and a lion, rampant, holding a dagger in its right paw. Above the lion is a banner containing the English motto. Below the shield and its supporters are more ornamental mantling and a suspended banner. 43. [Bookplate for David Stewart Erskine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered per cross, and contains an inescutcheon. The first quarter, azure (blue), contains three garbe, two over one. The second quarter is itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, azure with an or (gold) riband and six cross crosslets fitchy sable (black) ; the second and third quarters are argent (silver), with a pale, sable. The third quarter of the escutcheon is also itself quartered per cross, first and fourth quarters, or, with a fess in checky (alternate squares of metal and fur), argent and azure ; the second and third quarters are azure, containing three garbe, two over one. The fourth quarter, argent, with six bars, gemelles (doubles), contains a lion rampant, sable and proper. The inescutcheon, gules (red) contains an eagle, displayed and proper, and a ray of sun issuing out of the dexter corner. Atop the escutcheon is the coronet of an earl, topped by a grated helmet (peer), dexter. Upon the helmet is a curved crest wreath and a dexter cubit arm holding a club. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. The escutcheon is accompanied by two supporters. The dexter supporter is an ostrich, while the sinister supporter is a griffin. Below the escutcheon and the supporters is a banner containing the English motto. 44. [Bookplate for Peter Cameron] In black ink. This bookplate consists of escutcheon, barry of seven pieces, argent (silver) and gules (red). The crest, atop a straight wreath, appears as a dexter arm, vambraced, and holding a sword. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the latin motto. 45. [Bookplate for W. M. B. Hartley] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross, gules (red). The cross is charged with a roundlet, argent, at its centre and four cinque foil. At the dexter chief and sinister base are martlets closed. Perched atop the shield, on a straight crest wreath is a third martlet closed, holding a cross crosslet fitched in its beak. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for Heffernan Considine] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three lions passant gardant, gules (red). The crest, atop a straight wreath, appears as a dexter arm, vambraced, and holding a sword. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for Edgell Wyatt-Edgell] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and containing an inescutcheon. The first and forth quadrants of the escutcheon are sable (black) with a fess, dancette and argent (silver), three eagles displayed, two over one and or (gold), and chief, or. The second and third quadrants are argent, with a sable chevron containing three roundlets bezant (gold), and cinque foil, two over one and gules (red). The inescutcheon is checky, or and gules, and contains a lion rampant guardant. Atop the escutcheon is a dexter helmet, closed with mantling flowing horizontally from its top. Above the mantling are two further crests. The dexter consists of a demi-lion rampant, embattled in or and sable, on a wreath, holding an inverted arrow in its dexter paw. The sinister crest consists of a demi-lion rampant on a wreath, holding the long stem of a cinque foil, gules, in both its paws. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 48. [Bookplate for Edward Andrew Donaldson] In black ink. An escutcheon divided quarterly ; first and fourth quadrants, or (gold), a double-headed bird displayed, sable (black), above a lymphad showing three dexter flags, gules (red) ; second and third quadrants, gules, fess checky argent (silver) and gules, with two arrows argent. Also, two inescutcheons, or, with a hand gules. One inescutcheon is located in the centre of the escutcheon and the other in the top corner of the dexter chief. A escutcheon has a bordure, indented and azure (blue), with seven belt buckels, one at each corner of the escutcheon. The crest is a closed dexter helm, argent, with mantling. Atop the helm is a bare cubit arm grasping a dagger. There is a lance extending from the top dexter corner of the escutcheon, displaying a banner. The banner encirles a Latin cross and an anchor, and contains the Latin motto. Also, there is a triangle which contains a three-masted ship in the top left hand corner. A border frames the coat of arms and contains a saying in four languages. 49. [Bookplate for John Keeling] This heraldic bookplate consists of a Chippendale-styled escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a lion rampant. The lion holds an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is crested by a demi-lion atop a mural coronet, again holding an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is bordered by a decorative floral design, and at dexter, a dragon is positioned at the upper half. Flowers are present on the opposite side. Below the escutcheon, but within the floral design, the Latin motto is featured in a banner. 50. [Bookplate for Godfrey G. Roundell Greene by W. and A. Mussett - The Heraldic Studio] In brown ink, escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants divided per pale, or (gold) and azure (blue), three stags trippant, two over one, all counter changed. The second and third quadrants, or, with a fess, gules (red) between three olive branches, two over one. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet with mantling, below a demi-dragon crest, azure, gorged, argent (silver). 51. [Bookplate for George A. Hanson] In black ink, an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a cross botony, or (gold), between four fleur-de-lis, argent (silver). The escutcheon is crested by a dexter helmet, with the beaver closed and mantling. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath with bird perched. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 52. [Bookplate for William Molesworth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an annexed escutcheon, vair (argent [silver] and azure [blue]), with a martlet at the honour point ; and an inescutcheon, argent with a sinister hand, couped and gules (red) at the fess point. Baronets of the United Kingdom bear the red hand of Ulster. The escutcheon's bordure is gules, and contains eight cross crosslets, or (gold), three over two over three. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet of a baronet, front facing with beaver open. The helmet is crested by a curved wreath and a a sinister arm, vambraced, and holding a cross crosslet, or. [Bookplate for Florence Bailey Swift] This elaborate bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon, or (gold), containing a chevron, vair of argent (silver) and azure (blue), and charged with three stags, springing (or courant) and vert (green), two over one. The escutcheon is surrounded by an elaborate bordure, and topped by a dexter closed helmet. Atop the helmet is a curved crest wreath and an arm embowed, habited, holding four arrows. From either side of the helmet flows elaborate mantling, or and azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 54. [Bookplate for Philip Southcote] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an elaborately bordered escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a chevron, argent, three ducks, two over one and dexter, and an annulet at the precise middle chief. The annulet symbolizes the fifth son. The escutcheon is crested by a dexter closed helmet. Atop the helmet is a curved wreath and another duck, dexter. From either side of the crest flows elaborate mantling. 55. [Bookplate for Francis Fortescue Knottesford] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are azure (blue), a bend engrailed, or (gold), coticed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three are argent, cross engrailed, gules (red), in canton cinquefoil, azure (blue). The second pale is parted per quarter, in quarter one, a barry of eight, argent and vert (green), charged with a gryphon, rampant, segreant. Quarter two is argent, with a chevron, ermine, fimbrated sable (black), with two canons placed two over one around the chevron. Quarter three is argent, with a chevron, sable, charged with a bird displayed. Quarter four is azure charged with a lion rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a tyger passant atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing text. 56. [Bookplate for Henry Torre] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon which is slightly askew, being tilted from the central vertical axis of the image. The escutcheon is parted per fess. In dexter chief sable (black), charged with a crescent above and a tower below, a bordure vair. In middle chief, azure (blue), embattled and counter-embattled, argent, with three sable roundlets. Above the partition charged with two stags proper tripping, and below with one stag proper, tripping. In sinister chief, argent, two bars, gules (red), in canton gules, charged with cross Moline, or (gold). In dexter base, barry of six pieces, or and azure, in canton, argent, charged with a chaplet. In middle base, sable (black), lion rampant. In sinister base, argent, sable with three lozenges, gules above, and four below. The rococo vegetative mantling above the escutcheon finishes on either side with a tassel and includes, at its center, a straight wreath charged with a gryphon passant situated atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's Latin motto, with his name printed below. 57. [Bookplate for Thomas Jenings] In black ink. Argent, a chevron, gules (red), three cages two over one. Gryphon, couped, atop straight crest wreath, wings addorsed and elevated, cage hanging from open beak. On the dexter and sinister sides, two figures, nude, outside hands hold flowered mantling, inside hands point to chevron. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 58. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 59. [Bookplate] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per base. Lower field, vert [Green]. Upper, three pine trees, couped, on a field, argent [White or Silver]. Atop the escutcheon, a helmut of a knight or a baronet, on top of which is a straight wreath, on which stands a cock, close. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 60. [Bookplate for Harry Miller] Brown ink. The initials 'H.M.' are formed out of sticks of wood. Perched atop the letter "H" is a bespectacled owl with a feather tucked behind its ear.
