E. Horvath by B. I.] Black ink on cream paper. This bookplate combines Art Deco and Egyptian style and imagery. The black ink provides the background with most of the objects delineated in white from the paper. A figure in profile to walks towards the right of the scene holding high three books in offering. Behind the figure there is a curtain with a weaved pattern. Further back on the right hand side there is a vase with flowers, and two urns. One sits on the floor. Fire rises from the second one on a stand. 89. [Bookplate for University of British Columbia Library] Grey ink on cream paper. [Bookplate] Image shows both the recto and verso of the sample bookplate sheet produced by the Globe Wernicke Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio. The sheet contains two sample bookplates. The one on the left, in colour, shows two white swans on a water-lily spotted lake. On the distant shoreline, one can see among the green foliage the rooftop and chimney of a home. The image is framed by an oval floral border on a yellow and white background. The second sample bookplate, on the right, shows a pirate on a beach, either burying treasure or digging it up. On the pale blue water of the horizon, a ship sits in wait. The sample bookplate sheet is divided into four sections by perforated lines. The recto also includes a mail order form for more sample bookplates and a booklet on "The World's Best Books". The verso includes the reverse of the mail order form, complete with place for a stamp, and also an advertisement for Globe-Wernicke bookcases. 93. [Bookplate for Cornelia de Rozsnyayn-Prielle and J. E. Horvath] In red ink on brown paper, this bookplate presents us with a garden scene showing a young amorous couple coming down a pathway. In the background, we see a garden retreat, a fence and gate, and a water fountain. In the foreground is a bench, on which lie a lyre, an open book, a stem and flowers, and what appears to be a floral wreath or possibly a scarf. On the right are steps leading off the page on which sit a stone sphinx. 94. [Bookplate for J. E. Horvath by M. Trinque] This bookplate, in black ink on white paper with grey background portrays a man seated and thinking atop an architectural spiral. 95. [Bookplate for Joseph Bewley] This non-traditional heraldic bookplate consists of a tilted argent (silver) escutcheon with a sable (black) chevron. On the escutcheon are three bird heads, erased, two over one. Atop the shield is an unusually large helmet in profile, topped by a twig with leaves, a crest wreath, and a stag head, erased. From the helmet flows mantling. Above and below the image are banners containing the text. The image and banners are set upon a designed background and framed by a double border. 96. [Bookplate for Edmund F. Bourke by T. Welch] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base sections contain a gules (red) cross on an or (gold) background. At the dexter chief of each cross is a lion rampant. The dexter base and sinister chief sections are each divided per pale, with an argent (silver) dexter side and a gules (red) sinister side. In the middle of these two sections is a lion rampant surrounded by three fleur-de-lis, two over one. Sitting atop the shield on a curved crest wreath is a cat guardant with leash. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 97. [Bookplate for James Penderel Brodhurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base quarters are azure (blue) with fretty of twelve pieces, or (gold) and embattled. The sinister chief and dexter base quarters are argent (silver) and contain a sable (black) fess on which are three royal crowns. On the argent background is a tree. Located at the precise middle chief of the escutcheon is a label, which represents the first son. Raised above the shield are two straight crest wreaths. Atop the dexter is a nested swan, wings displayed azure and elevated, with fretty of twelve pieces, or and embattled. On the belly of the swan is a sable etoile. Atop the sinister crest wreath sit crossed a sceptre and a sword. Above them is a royal crown. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 98. [Bookplate for William Hall Walker by F.] Dense with imagery, this bookplate consists of a central framed coat of arms, surrounded by many symbols and figures, including a rose, a portcullis, a bird, a small argent escutcheon charged with a lion rampant, a thistle, military insignia, mounted hunting spoils, an anchor, rifles, swords, polo mallets, horseracing emblems, horse carriage hook-up, foliage, tree branches, and knights on horseback. The knight on the left sits upon an armored sable horse, holds a lance in his right arm, and wears a cornucopia crested helmet. The knight on the right sits upon a unarmored white horse and holds a white flag in his right hand, on which is the image of a tree and fox on a circular white and azure (blue) background. The coat of arms, presented within a border of grape vines and under the motto 'By Care and Industry', consists of a white horse and stag as supporters, with juxtaposed garbe, proper. The escutcheon, argent, contains both a chief and saltier. The chief is argent (silver), with two argent mullets of six points and garbe, proper. The saltier, argent, is charged with eight seedlings eradicated and a stag's head, erased, at its centre. Atop the shield is a baron's coronet and helmet, grated and in profile, crested by a wreath and cornucopia. 99. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 100. [Bookplate for W. H. Campbell] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered and counter-changed, containing the arms of the ancient Scottish family Campbell and a galley, on an argent (silver) background. The arms of Campbell are Gyronny of eight, or (gold) and sable (black). The galley is an ancient vessel often used in the arms of naval officers. Atop the shield is a helm and mantling, which is crested by a curved wreath and a boar's head, erased.
