[Bookplate for George Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black) and charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Quarters two and three are azure (blue), with a chevron or (gold) between three lion heads, erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a closed esquire helmet, positioned en profile, with mantling radiating from it, surrounding theescutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 42. [Bookplate for George R. Maxwell] Heraldic bookplate. Two rampant stags support an argent shield. At the centre of the shield is a two-headed black eagle with its wings and legs spread and its heads turned to opposite sides. On the chest of the eagle is a square with a black X. "Reviresco" I flourish again. 43. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 44. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 45. [Bookplate for Henry Mott by J. E. H. MacDonald] Black ink. Azure (blue) escutcheon charged with a argent (silver) crescent. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, an eight-point star and the originator's name. Below a waving banner displays the originator's Latin motto. All of the elements cited above are framed by a shield shaped border. Additionally, the paper is cut at skewed angles, causing the image to appear lopsided. 46. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 47. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 48. [Bookplate for J. J. Girouard] Black ink on grey paper. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 52. [Bookplate for J. W. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. The shield features a sinister canton paly. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, gothic font. More text is printed below the name in smaller, black, capitalized, serif font. 53. [Bookplate for James Bell] Centered text in black ink, with three fonts. 54. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 55. [Bookplate for Jean Dessaulles] Black in on white paper. Text in center surrounded with a simple square border of stars. Handwriting on the bookplate in brown and red ink. 56. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 57. [Bookplate for John Darby] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), with a chevron, argent (silver), with the lower part a fillet. Upon the escutcheon are three sheaves of wheat (possibly corn, garbe), two over one . A military medal is at centre chief, with the word "NILE" immediately below. Within the chevron, an anchor each at dexter and sinister, with a naval crown at centre. Above the escutcheon is a crest of a sheaf of wheat (or possibly corn, garbe) and an anchor, upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 58. [Bookplate for John Eardley Wilmot] In black ink. A marshalling of 12, this bookplate incorporates several notable charges, including two sets of eagle heads, erased, a leg erased, three garbes, a stag salient with hounds in pursuit, a scythe, three bugle-horns, three maiden's busts, three crosses-crosslet, three mullets and a lion rampant. The escutcheon is surrounded by an ornate, foliage border in the Chippendale style. It is crowned with a peer helmet, set upon a vegetative backdrop. The mantling supports two straight wreathes, charged with a demi-eagle, holding an escalop in its beak (dexter) and a stag courant (sinister). Among the many heraldic armorials depicted, this bookplate includes several identifiable familial crests. The originator's descendants, include, from dexter chief to sinister base, the Wilmot family in armorial one, the Eardley family in armorial three and the Marrow family in armorial seven. The Wilmot family armorial displays a sable (black) background parted per fess, or (gold), with three escalops on the fess, situated between three eagle heads, erased, two over one. The Eardley family armorial is argent (silver), with a chevron, azure (blue), charged with three garbes (sheaves of corn) and in canton gules (red) a fret, or. The Marrow family armorial is azure, parted per fess, or, engrailed, situated between three maiden's busts, two over one. 59. [Bookplate for John George Hodgins] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a displayed black bird on a crest-wreath. At the top left of the bird, next to the tip of its wing, is a small radiating sun with a face in the middle. There is an esquire’s helm surrounded by dark, feathery mantling. The border of the shield is similarly elaborate. The shield is argent and charged with an argent cross with thin black border around each rectangular section. The shield is also charged with five black flowers that have five round petals and a circular black center. There is a flower in each corner of the shield and one in the center of the cross with a thin, black, square border. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with curling, darkened ends. The motto is written in black, capitalized, serif font. Below the ribbon, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, sentence case, Gothic font. 60. [Bookplate for John George Mortlock by Charles William Sherborn] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a tilted escutcheon and crest framed by an elaborate circular bordure. The escutcheon is divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a fret, azure (blue), and contain a chief, azure, charged with three fleur-de-lis, argent ; the second and third quadrants, sable (black), are charged with three annulets, argent, two over one, and contain a chevron, argent and engrailed. The escutcheon is crested by a closed dexter helmet resting upon the second quadrant, topped by a wreath and a lion sejant, with dexter paw elevated and resting upon a fleur-de-lis, argent. From either side of the helmet flows mantling and a banner which contains the Latin motto.
