[Bookplate for George de Pafsau] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with a greyhound courant (in motion), running on ground. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a greyhound couchant (sitting position). Below the escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 23. [Bookplate for Thomas Leland] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), with a fess, sable (black). The fess is charged with a lion passant, and an escallop on either side. The upper part of the escutcheon is charged with three sheaves of wheat, with three stocks apiece. Upon the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a gryphon, possibly an opinicus, with wings elevated and addorsed. In the creature's beak are three stocks of wheat. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 24. [Bookplate for Schuyler Merritt] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, a barry of six, or (gold) and sable (black), with a bend, ermine (white powdered fur, black tufts). Above the escutcheon is a helmet in profile (denoting status of esquire and gentleman). Above the helmet is a curved wreath charged with a chained beast passant. Surrounding the escutcheon is a circular banner, with Latin motto within. The entire crest is situated in a rectangular frame filled with foliage-like mantling in the upper half and a row of books directly below the escutcheon. An open book, three open flowers, and a banner with "EX LIBRIS" are situated in the foreground in front of the volumes. 25. [Bookplate for Stephen Langston] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. On the left, or (gold), charged with a chevron, azure (blue). Above the chevron, are three heraldic roses in chief, and at centre base below the chevron a sea creature. On the right, the quadrant is parted per cross, with quarters two and four, or, vair in pale, azure. Quarters two and three are sable (black), parted per fess, argent (silver). The quarters are charged with three cinque foil, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with the sea creature at centre base at dexter and a rose bush. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 26. [Bookplate for Frances Mary Richardson Currer] This heraldic bookplate consists of a stylized escutcheon, with a pale counterchanged per fess. Sections one and six are parted per cross, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chief argent (silver), charged with three lions erased. Quarters two and three consists of a barry of eight ermine and azure (blue), with a chief azure, charged with a lion passant guardant. Section two is azure, with a simple bend or (gold), charged with two heads of a stag. Section three is azure, with a bend engrailed and or, charged with three martlets. Section four is ermine, with a cross engrailed and sable. Finally, section five is vert (green), with a bordure engrailed and or, charged with a stag's head. Below the entire escutcheon is bookplate owner's name. 27. [Bookplate for John Keeling] This heraldic bookplate consists of a Chippendale-styled escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a lion rampant. The lion holds an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is crested by a demi-lion atop a mural coronet, again holding an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is bordered by a decorative floral design, and at dexter, a dragon is positioned at the upper half. Flowers are present on the opposite side. Below the escutcheon, but within the floral design, the Latin motto is featured in a banner. 28. [Bookplate for Francis Lawson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a chippendale styled escutcheon, argent (silver) parted per pale ; first, argent, with a saltier, azure (blue), the upper part charged with three garbs, the lower a boar's head, and at dexter and sinister an etoile each ; second, argent, depicting a wolf salient, climbing a tree, vert (green), possibly oak. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a boar's head and below the escutcheon the name and location of the bookplate's owner. The entire escutcheon and accompanying text are surrounded by elaborate chippendale borders. 29. [Bookplate for Thorleit Larson] This bookplate's design is focus on the "Ex Libris" ; the text and surrounding design is done in a style reminiscent of an illuminated manuscript. A book containing owner's name is below. 30. [Bookplate for Harold Hampson] This bookplate's design features a collared greyhound's head, erased, above a mural coronet. Below a banner waves containing the originator's Latin motto. 31. [Bookplate for Johannis Platt by John Dickson Batten] This bookplate has both heraldic and pictoral qualities. The primary subject of the bookplate is a lamb, grazing in a glade of flowers, with bookplate owner's name in a banner below. In the background, the bookplate features a pen of sheep as well as a dead wolf hanging from a tree. At top-left corner, the bookplate features an escutcheon, azure (blue), charged with two fleur-de-lis and a lamb, two over one, and a chevron or (gold) charged with a fleur-de-lis and two cinque foil. Above the escutcheon is a peer helmet, with a wreath charged with a grazing lamb. Mantling radiates from the helmet, and Welsh motto is contained on one side. The entire scene is contained within a stylized border, with Welsh motto within. 32. [Bookplate for Henri Rainville] This bookplate depicts a large, bespectacled rat, dressed in what appears to be eighteenth-century attire and displaying a prominent tail and whiskers. Facing away from the viewer, the rat is seated at a table in front of a window, through which the leaves of a tree can be seen. The rodent holds a quill pen and is poised to continue writing in a book that is propped open on the table with a second, closed volume. 33. [Bookplate for Castle-Freke Library by Griffiths and Weigall] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with the dexter half divided into six, each with unique charges, and the sinister half, gules (red), charged with a simple fess or (gold). The dexter half is charged with three cross crosslet fitched, two over one. The escutcheon is supported by two lions, rampand reguardant. Above the escutcheon are two crests, both straight wreaths charged with an ox's head couped and a lion rampant reguardant holding another beast's head. Above the crests is a baron coronet. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Bookplate is cut to border, which has blunted corners. 34. [Bookplate for Charles Eliot Norton] This bookplate consists of a straight heraldic wreath charged with a gryphon. Below the wreath a three books, piled, with a scroll over-top, with Latin motto within. 35. [Bookplate for Hood] This bookplate consists of a escutcheon, azure (blue) and a fret, argent (silver), with a chief, or (gold), charged with three crescents. The shield features an inescutcheon or, with a chevron sable (black), charged with three wildcat heads cabossed, two over one. Above the inescutcheon is another small escutcheon argent, with a human hand gules, indicating the status of Knight and Baronet. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, and the escutcheon is supported by a merman at dexter and a mermaid at sinister. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire achievement is bookplate owner's name. 36. [Bookplate by F.A.C.] The bookplate depicts a lakeside scene in which a hotel is set among trees at the edge of the water. Prominent hills also give a sense of the surrounding landscape. This picturesque scene is framed by a border of trees. Amongst the leaves at the top of image is a scroll that reads 'Ex-Libris.' At the bottom of the image, an open book displays the words 'Rogers Rock.'. 37. [Bookplate for W. J. M. Jones] The book plate owner's name and city are printed in black ink on cream paper in one script-style font. 38. [Bookplate] Printed in light black ink on white paper with some foxing. The text is surrounded by a patterned border. 39. [Bookplate for C. Gordonsmith] Printed in brown ink, the bookplate depicts an interior room scene with a fire place and mantel, book shelf, and arm chair. Pictorial. 40. [Bookplate for J. Harry Smith by William Walker Alexander] Printed in brown ink on cream paper, the bookplate shows a man in the dress of a 19th-century agricultural laborer against a background of clouds and a landscape of fields, trees, and three buildings (possibly a house, a barn, and an out building). The man holds a basket in his left hand and sows seeds with his right hand. In the left foreground, a lamb frolics next to an open book. The right page of the book reads 'LAMB'S / TALES.' Underneath the open book appears a manuscript upon which rests an inkwell and a quill pen. The date '1942' is written in the bottom left corner of the manuscript. To the right of the book appears a mailbox with 'R. R. / 4' written on the door. On the side of the mailbox appear the words 'Knoll Farm / J. HARRY SMITH.'
