[Bookplate for Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire] Purple ink on white paper. Seal of IODE at top. Text below. Border consists of three fine lines at top and bottom and a single fine line at the sides. 22. [Bookplate for James MacLennan] Black ink on white paper. Border made up of three fine lines surrounds text. Text fills entire space. 23. [Bookplate for Consulat General de France] Black ink on white paper. Small shield surrounded by leaves at top. Text at bottom. 24. [Bookplate for Frank Marx Etting] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a chevron, gules (red). On the chevron are three roundlets, argent. The escutcheon is bordered by mantling, and crested by a dexter cubit arm holding a sword. Impaled on the sword is a boar's head. The boar's head is said to represent unflinching courage and fierceness on the battlefield. In Irish literature, it was symbolic of aggression and savegery, and symbolized the Devil. 25. [Bookplate for Charles Manby by Suffield] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with a stylized bordure. The dexter quadrant, gules (red), is charged with a lion rampant and a chief, argent (silver), with three martlets. The sinister quadrant, gules, is charged with four etoiles, two over two, and contains a canton, coloured ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), in the dexter chief of the quadrant, covering two-thirds of the etoile in that location. The canton represents the banner of the ancient Knights Banneret, which is an honourable order which has become extinct. It was on order conferred upon persons, recognized by a king or general, that had perfomed some heroic act on the battlefield. The escutcheon is crested by a straight wreath and a lion passant guardant, holding what appears to be a millrind, sable (black) in its dexter paw. The millrind is placed in the centre of a grindstone to protect the hole in the centre from the action of the axis ; it is a charge frequently used by persons connected with agriculture. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 26. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 27. [Bookplate for Kathleen Reit and Francis Reit] This bookplate's design features a devil-like figure reading a book beneath a tree, by a brook. 28. [Bookplate for London Public Library and Art Museum] This bookplate’s design features a depiction of the façade of the London, Canada, Mechanics’ Institute framed by two large maple trees. A banner above, labels the print as an ex-libris and a separate compartment below the building displays several books and the originating institution’s name. 29. [Bookplate for Martha Gold Morgan] In black ink on textured paper. At the top of the bookplate, appears a small image of a lion's head, erased, crowned and charged on a straight wreath. The lion's head, set on a white coin above a scroll with the Morgan motto, is the traditional badge of the clan. Two flowers flank the lion motif and one appears centered below the bottom compartment. These designs are set on a background displaying the silhouette of a tree and wind-blown leaves. Morgan's name is written in large black print on white background. 30. [Bookseller's Tickets for Zephirin Chapeleau] 1) In black ink on green paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a thin black border surrounding black text. 2) In black ink on green paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a wavy black border surrounding black text. 3) In black ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a wavy black border surrounding black text. 4) In black ink on white paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a wavy black border surrounding black text. 31. [Bookbinder's Tickets for Zephirin Chapeleau and J.M. Lamothe] 1) In black ink on gray paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a black decorative border surrounding black text. 2) In black ink on yellow paper, the bookbinder's ticket consists of a black decorative border surrounding black text. 32. [Bookplate for Carleton Place High School] A wavy border surrounds the words. The name 'Carleton Place' is written in slightly smaller sans-serif font, and underneath the words 'High School Library' are written in a larger serif font. There are three lines and then the name of the department to which the book belonged. Underneath this are three more lines, and then the class number to which the book belonged. 33. [Bookplate for W. J. M. Jones] The book plate owner's name and city are printed in black ink on cream paper in one script-style font. 34. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 35. [Bookplate for Herbert Fairbairn Gardiner] Black ink on cream paper. Thin black border surrounds the text and image on the bookplate. At the top of the bookplate, within the border, is printed black gothic text. Below the text is a portrait photograph of the bookplate owner showing a balding white man with a large moustache in a black suit with a white shirt and bow tie. The photograph has a thin black border. Below the photograph is large, black, sentence case font. Underneath this text is the same font in a smaller size. 36. [Bookplate for Robert A. Harrison] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a demi-lion rampant on the top part of a castle tower. The lion is wearing a crown and holding a floral wreath in its paws. There is a gentlemen and esquire’s helm surrounded by elaborately curling sable and argent mantling that extends out to each side and tapers down to the base of the bookplate. Shield is sable and charged with three demi-lions rampant, two over one. The lions are wearing crowns. The motto is below the shield printed in capitalized block white letters on a banner with curling ends. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in black, gothic sentence-case font at the bottom of the bookplate. 37. [Bookplate for William Greening and Cornelia Greening by A. N. Macdonald] Black ink on cream paper. Elaborately decorated frame surrounds three round images, two small ones atop a larger, oval one. The border has a shelf-like appearance with the top featuring a series of curling, heart-shaped decorations with a large, spiraling curlicue extending to the left and right. The very centre of the top element features a leaf-like decoration pointing upwards. The top half of the sides of the border features symmetrical leafy curlicue decorations that extend downwards with a pseudo-fleurs-de-lis to a line of elaborate floral decorations. The large oval image extends to the sides of the borders and below the oval are decorations on both the left and right sides. The left side features a tennis racket entwined in leafy decoration. The right side contains golf clubs in the same leafy decoration. Leafy decoration also surround the two small images inside the border, which are connected by two wrapping ribbons in the centre. The image on the left features an explorer holding a walking stick and wearing a hat looking out onto a nature landscape. The landscape includes water and a mountain topped with clouds. The image on the right contains a road curving to the right. The right side of the road features foliage, including several palm trees. The large, central image shows a house with some of its garden in the foreground. The forefront of the image is a simple lawn, followed by several small trees on the left with plants in barrels, a table, and several chairs on the right. Between the trees and chairs is a path leading further into the garden and towards the house. The house is quite large and has at least two stories and a sheltered porch. Towards the other end of the house and garden are taller trees. Below the images is a rectangular box with a border. The border consists of two thin white lines with a darker centre between them. The centre of the rectangle contains text written in capitalized serif font in varying sizes. Below the rectangle, the artist’s name and date of creation is written in small, sentence-case serif font. Handwritten note in pencil on the back. 38. [Bookplate for Robert Hall and William Phillips Barrett by William Phillips Barrett] Printed in black ink on cream colored paper. The interior of a private library or study room is depicted. The right-hand side of the room is lined with a wall of books, which is topped with several carved busts. In the centre of the room, a large reading table holds several books and is surrounded by three chairs – an upholstered armchair on the left and two wooden chairs on the right. The books are heavy, bound manuscripts and one is open to display an illuminated frontispiece. In the background, a large bay window looks to a building with a spire that is surrounded by shrubbery. 39. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on pale pinkish tan paper. Ornate curlicue border with circular corner designs. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, while the institute name is written in title case with gothic script. Separated by thin straight lines, the card number field is written in stylized bold font. The lending rules are written in serif font. 40. [Bookplate for Library of the Hamilton and Gore Mechanics’ Institute] Black ink on tan paper. Curlicue and straight-line border. Multiple fonts are present. The library title is written in bold and non-bold capital letters, with the institute name in sentence case gothic script. Separated by centered, thin straight lines, there is a left aligned field for class and a right aligned field for card number written in bold serif font.
