[Bookplate for George Macaulay Booth] This is a pictorial bookplate created with black ink on white paper. In the foreground are cobblestones and an open doorway. On the left of the doorway is a desk with a lit candle and an open book on it and in the middle of the doorway is a sundial. Outside of the doorway are rolling hills with two paths: one leading to a village and the other to a bay with two boats on it. A sun sets/rises over the bay. At the bottom is a Latin inscription framed with two roses that reads: "Nec temere nec timide [neither rashly nor timidly] / Dulce Periculum [danger is sweet]." Two animals are portrayed on the right and left sides of the inscription. 222. [Bookplate for George Kerr] Grey ink on green-grey paper. The bookplate is in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners and a bulging circle in the center. The top portion of the bookplate features a half circle basic graphic of the sun on the horizon. The design is created using simple lines. Surrounding this image are half circles of various sizes with thick borders on the outside and several thinner inner borders on the inside. The circle shape in the center has a thick border decorated with two thick black lines that are intersected by plain crisscrosses three times each on the left and right-hand sides. There are some decorative shapes at the top of the circle, forming a small point. Below those shapes text is printed in capitalized, block, grey letters. The center of the circle depicts a man in a wig and robe reading a large book. The spine of the book and face of the man are facing the viewer. The background of the image is comprised of thin, black, horizontal lines. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below the image in large, capitalized, block serif grey font. Decorative shapes like the one at the top of the circle extend from the bottom as well, forming a larger point. The base of the bookplate is decorated with various rounded shapes, in both oblong and tear drop shape, filled with thinner black lines. A plain section extends from the bottom left and right corners up to the middle of the bookplate, meeting the text at the base of the central circle. In these sections are printed mottos in smaller, capitalized, sans-serif font. 223. [Bookplate for George Herbert Wailes] This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 224. [Bookplate for George H. Fensom by Walter Lohse] Black and yellow ink on thick, cream coloured paper. This bookplate features a well-lit, paned window framing a rearing Pegasus. Plants and vines surround the window. 225. [Bookplate for George H. Fensom by Thoreau MacDonald] In black ink. Landscape featuring a cabin overlooking a lake. 226. [Bookplate for George Francis Steele by E. J. W.] In black ink on white or cream paper it depicts a nude male figure riding a Pegasus in the upper left surrounded by a swirl of stars, planets, and other astronomical bodies. Another nude, winged male figure in the lower right holds a quill pen in his right hand and in his left, the end of a ribbon on which "EX LIBRIS / AD ASTRA" is written. A dark dome, possibly representing a planet, occupies the lower left. There are blue smudges, possibly ink, across the lower third of the bookplate. 227. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 228. [Bookplate for George Desbarats] Black ink on cream paper. A slim, beaded border with curlicues in each corner surrounds the title of Desbarats private library. Above Desbarats’ name “Madame” is handwritten in black ink. A blank number line is printed below the title with two handwritten entries. 229. [Bookplate for Geoffrey Christian and Michael B. Kunze] This image portrays, in black ink, on white paper, three books, one open and two lying stacked on their sides in front of the open book. In front of the three books is a large black inkwell containing a quill. The inkwell sits upon a manuscript. The manuscript has a seal on it. The image is set on a black background, with a curved top. 230. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 231. [Bookplate for Gabrielle Labelle] Black ink on cream paper. The border consists of two black lines on the left and right-hand sides. At the base of each side are black decorative spiraling lines. The top and bottom portion of the border are more elaborate. These borders are thicker with a thin black line on either side and a thick black line in the center. The border is wavy with the lines slanting on either side towards the center of the border. On the top and bottom center of the border is a small half circle decorated with black stripes. In the upper righthand corner of the bookplate is text printed in a stylized serif, capitalized, black font. In the middle of the bookplate is a drawing of a woman sitting at a tall desk reading an open book. The desk is narrow and tall with cupboard at the back. The cupboard is round at the top and the doors are decorated with simple slanted lines. The woman has her hair up and is wearing a dress with puffed sleeves decorated with a simple flower. The skirt of the dress is extremely large and round. The skirt extends out across the entire bottom half of the bookplate. Part of the skirt is decorated with stylized spiral lines and a flower. At the base of the skirt, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in a stylized cursive, black, sentence case font. 232. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on off-white paper with an adhesive backing. The image depicts a stylized scene of a laborer in a field. The figure stands with his face in profile and in shadow with the shoulders and torso turned toward the viewer. He wears a plaid shirt and a rounded black hat with a flat brim. In his left hand the figure holds the handle of a long scythe, which rests on his left shoulder with the blade extending behind. In his right hand he carries a bushel of wheat. The foreground contains stylized stalks of wheat while the background depicts rolling hills and rounded clouds. In the middle ground there are more fields with a house positioned to the right of the figure. 233. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on orange-yellow paper with an adhesive backing. The image depicts a stylized scene of a laborer in a field. The figure stands with his face in profile and in shadow with the shoulders and torso turned toward the viewer. He wears a plaid shirt and a rounded black hat with a flat brim. In his left hand the figure holds the handle of a long scythe, which rests on his left shoulder with the blade extending behind. In his right hand he carries a bushel of wheat. The foreground contains stylized stalks of wheat while the background depicts rolling hills and rounded clouds. In the middle ground there are more fields with a house positioned to the right of the figure. 234. [Bookplate for G. L. L. Davies] The central image is bordered from the outside moving inwards by a black frame surrounding a white frame, surrounding a black frame surrounding a white frame, surrounding a single black fillet containing the central image. The central image is of two leafless trees standing to either side of a view until a series of three hills. In the distance is a black sun rising with black and white rays coming from it towards the top of the image. The entire image is bordered by two banners at the top and bottom which are separated from the main image by a single black fillet. 235. [Bookplate for G Wirthrich] In black ink. Decorated escutcheon is parted per fess. Top, gules (red), a man cut off at the hips, bearded, with a downturned arrow in his right hand, a club in his left, a rapier in his mouth, and wearing a rounded hat. Bottom, azure (blue), a battle-axe and a club crossed. Supporters, two gryphons combatant with arrowed tongues standing on stairs. Above the escutcheon is a ducal coronet. 236. [Bookplate for Fritz Rohde and Michael B. Kunze] Black ink on tan paper. Shows a young man in 18th century dress bending over an open book. There is a second book between his knees. He stands on the text. 237. [Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print in two blocks. In green and red ink. Image of the top half of a woman, nude. Bookplate text above image. 238. [Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Colour woodblock print in four blocks. In black, flesh pink, mustard yellow, and deep mustard yellow ink. Image of the midsection of a woman, nude. Bookplate text at top. Name or initials of artist at bottom right. 239. [Bookplate for Frederic William Howay] At the top is a sea otter resting on the sand with a mountainous coast in the background. Below that within a shield-shaped frame is a picture of a sailing vessel with the title "SEA OTTER" on the stern. The shield is surrounded by various sea shells, with a banner displaying the bookplate text. 240. [Bookplate for Frederic Lumb Wanklyn] In brown ink on white paper, a flying duck within a darkened circle is at the centre of the bookplate. It appears to be affixed to a post, on top of which there is a sign that reads 'Ex Libris F.L. Wanklyn.'
