[Bookplate for Collège de Saint-Laurent] In black ink on white paper, at the top of this bookplate one finds a banner bearing the text “BIBLIOTHÈQUE DU COLLÈGE DE SAINT-LAURENT” [French: Library of Saint-Laurent College], below which sits the coat of arms of Quebec. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Or (gold) on a fess Gules (red) between two fleurs de lis in chief Azure (blue), and a sprig of three leaves of maple slipped Vert (green) in base, a lion passant guardant Or (gold). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “JE ME SOUVIENS” [French: I Remember]. On either side of the coat of arms of Quebec are shining five-point stars. Below the coat of arms of Quebec on the left is the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver). A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto “SPES UNICA” [Latin: Our Only Hope]. To the right of the coat of arms of the Congregation of the Holy Cross appear the words “EX LIBRIS.” Further to the right is a third coat of arms, likely the coat of arms of the Collège de Saint-Laurent. The coat of arms consists of a shield or escutcheon party per fess, first party per pale Azure (blue), charged with a Latin cross, Or (gold), surmounted by two anchors, saltier, Argent (silver) ; Gules (red), charged with a feather quill, Argent (silver) ; second Azure (blue), a pale Or (gold). A banner dividing the shield per fess bares the acronym “C. S. L.” A banner below the escutcheon bears the motto of the Collège de Saint-Laurent: “PALMA DE CRUCE” [Latin: Victory by the Cross]. Below the three coats of arms appears a beaver facing left below which rests two crossed branches of sugar maple tied with a ribbon. At the bottom of the bookplate appear the words “MONTRÉAL, CANADA.”. 2. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners. 3. [Bookseller's Tickets for Chapman's Book Store] 1) In metallic gold ink on black glossy paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of plain text with no border or decoration. 2) In metallic gold ink on black matte paper, the bookseller's ticket consists of a gold border surrounding gold text. 4. [Bookplate for William Brophy] In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of an architectural, Egyptian-themed border with lotus flowers all around, a Sphinx in the lower right, and Egyptian wall art in the lower left. Below the school name and above the location is a monogram made of the letters CSV. Five fonts used for the text, with spaces for hand-written annotations naming the prize recipient. 5. [Bookplate] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border with curlicues in each corner houses the title, location, and loan policies of the library. Between the city and the loan policy is a vertical dividing line with a curlicue in the centre. 6. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on blue paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of fountains, geometric repeating patterns, and a cross surrounds the text. 7. [Bookplate for Sir Charles Tupper] Crest is a dog (i.e. loyalty and guidance). Helm is a Baronets and Knights. On the shield at the middle chief are two boars (i.e. courage and savagery) ; at the fess point are three shells(i.e. water, love, St. James the Apostle, pilgrimage and travel). 8. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 9. [Bookplate for Reginald Hibbert Tupper] The crest is a dog with a flower in its mouth. Below the crest is a banner with the motto. 10. [Bookplate for Consulat General de France] Black ink on white paper. Small shield surrounded by leaves at top. Text at bottom. 11. [Bookplate for Macdonald Bridges] This bookplate consists of an argent escutcheon divided by a sable (black) cross. At the centre of the cross is a small lion's head. Atop the three-pointed shield is a small crest wreath on which rests a voyageur-type human figure, couped. Above the image is a banner containing the French motto. Below the shield is a tree, or bush, which grows up both sides of the shield, resembling heraldic mantling. 12. [Bookplate for Charles Bathurst] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter side, sable (black), contains two bars, ermine (design representing white powdered fur with black tufts). At the centre of the top bar there is a crescent, or (gold), within a mullet, gules (red). On the top third of the sable background are three cross formy, or. The sinister side is itself divided per pale, ermine and ermines (design representing black fur powdered with argent [silver]). It contains three fleurs-de-lis all counter-changed, two over one, and contains a chevron charged with five lozenges, ermine and ermines all counter-changed. Atop the shield, but not resting on it, is a straight crest wreath and an arm embowed, with fist clenched holding a spiked club. The arm is charged with a crescent, or , within a mullet, gules. 13. [Bookplate for William Arnold Bromfield by William West] In black ink, a belt/garter provides the border. Within is a demi-lion atop a curved crest wreath. In its paws is a sword, with point severed. The belt contains the French motto. 14. [Bookplate for Sir George Frederick Samuel Robinson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a crest of a stag at gaze, which is upon a small version of a coronet of duke status. Surrounding the crest in a circular orientation is a garter of azure (blue), with French motto within. Surrounding the garter is a heraldic collar, with twelve roses (surrounded by circular garters with French motto within) at regular intervals. Upon the collar is a full version of a coronet of duke status, and immediately below the collar (as a pendant) is a rendering of the biblical event of St. George slaying the dragon. 15. [Bookplate for Thomas Philip Earl de Gray] This heraldic bookplate is elaborately engraved in Chippendale style. The escutcheon is counterchanged per fess, its primary quarterings (at top left and bottom right) consisting of a barry of six, argent (silver) and azure (blue). The quarter at mid-top is vert (green), divided per chevron, or (gold). The quarter is also charged with three stags statant, two over one. The top left quarter is argent (silver), with a saltier, azure. The quarter is also charged with a roundlet, argent. The bottom left quarter is a gyrony of eight pieces, or and sable (gold). The quarter at mid-bottom is argent, divided per fess, gules (red) with a fillet in the lower part, azure. The quarter is also charged with three rings, gules on both the upper and lower parts. The Chippendale escutcheon is surrounded by two detailed dragons, the dexter supporter with its tailed nowed. Above the escutcheon is a coronet of earl status, and below the shield with Latin motto within. The owner's name is surrounded with elaborate borderwork, in the same style of wreath surrounding the shield. 16. [Bookplate for Loren Griswold DuBois] In black ink. Per blazon sinister, or (gold) and argent (silver). A lion rampant, sable (black), queue fourche, grasping a scimetar, azure (blue). A tower turreted, with banners sinister on either side, azure. Upon a straight crest wreath is a demi-lion, sable with queue fourche, grasping a scimetar, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 17. [Bookplate for Ferdinand I Czar of Bulgaria] In black ink, this complex bookplate contains an escutcheon divided quarterly ; the first and fourth quadrants contain a lion, salient and crowned (it is unclear what colour these quadrants would be due to the printing process) ; the second quadrant, argent (silver) contains two pallets, likely sable (black), and a sable chief charged with two crowns, argent, possibly signifying eastern or celestial crowns ; and the third quadrant, argent, contains two manche facing one another, with arms and hands emerging, together holding a crown. At the fess point is an inescutcheon, which bears the coat of arms of Saxony ; barry of ten pieces, or (gold) and sable, with a garter (vert), floral invection on sinister side. The escutcheon is crested by a royal crown framed by a circular halo. The escutcheon is supported by two lions, wearing royal crowns, each also framed by a circular halo. From around the waist of each lion descends a collar which meets at the nombril point below the escutcheon ; from this point hangs the Grand Cross Of The Order Of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. At either side of the order is a banner containing the originator's designation. Above the crest and supporters are two sets of fleur-de-lis, two over one, signifying the House of Bourbon ; and an additional banner. 18. [Bookplate for George Grey] In black ink, this bookplate contains an escutcheon with a barry of six pieces, argent (silver) and azure (blue), and a bend gules (red). On the bend are three roundlets bezant (gold). A diadem crest containing a swan rising with wings addorsed and elevated, and a trefoil on its breast. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 19. [Bookplate for Charles Manby by Suffield] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per pale, with a stylized bordure. The dexter quadrant, gules (red), is charged with a lion rampant and a chief, argent (silver), with three martlets. The sinister quadrant, gules, is charged with four etoiles, two over two, and contains a canton, coloured ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), in the dexter chief of the quadrant, covering two-thirds of the etoile in that location. The canton represents the banner of the ancient Knights Banneret, which is an honourable order which has become extinct. It was on order conferred upon persons, recognized by a king or general, that had perfomed some heroic act on the battlefield. The escutcheon is crested by a straight wreath and a lion passant guardant, holding what appears to be a millrind, sable (black) in its dexter paw. The millrind is placed in the centre of a grindstone to protect the hole in the centre from the action of the axis ; it is a charge frequently used by persons connected with agriculture. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 20. [Bookplate for Eliab Harvey] In black ink, an oval escutcheon, or (gold), with a dancette chief, sable (black), containing three crescents, argent (silver). The crest is a dexter hand couped at the wrist and erected, floating above is an inverted crescent, argent. The Latin motto is found encircling the escutcheon on the bordure, argent. A wreath made of two laurel branches encapsulates the escutcheon.
