Decorative vegetative mantling surrounds the escutcheon within the bounds of a rectangular frame. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. This bookplate appears to be a smaller version of BP MUR SL P H475b, but the creator's initials are barely visible amongst the mantling. 42. Behind the laurel wreath, waves a banner containing the bookplate originator's Latin motto and below the coat of arms is a separate compartment containing the originator's name. A smaller version of this bookplate may also be viewed at BP MUR SL P H475a. 43. [Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.' This bookplate adheres to the design described above by the RHSC, though the 'honourable augmentation,' of the Canadian crest in dexter chief, does not appear in this escutcheon. 44. [Bookplate for J. W. Dunbar Moodie] Escutcheon divided per quarterly. Dexter chief and sinister base display three ships in full sail on azure (blue), below a tower over background gules (red). Sinister chief and dexter base display three arrow heads, argent (silver) on an azure base, with a hunting horn above a chevron, ermine. Above the escutcheon is a vizored helm with a naval coronet ; above that is a lion, passant guardant, holding a flag. The motto is inscribed in a scroll above the lion. 45. [Bookplate for Arthur Richard Springett] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield or escutcheon Gules (red) party per fess wavy with three crescents, two over one, Argent (silver). The closed, barred helm in profile toward the dexter half bears a crest of a displayed eagle upon a nowed snake in a figure eight and a straight wreath. The helm is surrounded by mantling. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'MEMOR ET FIDELIS' [Latin: Mindful and Faithful]. 46. [Bookplate for Ian Waldie by Alexander Scott Carter] In black ink on white paper, a sailboat at sea with a fish depicted in the waves below. Three seagulls are flying around the boat. A wide, bold floral border surrounds the image of the ship, with a few books and a lyre above it. 47. [Bookbinder's Tickets] 1) In black ink on cream paper, the ticket consists of an escutcheon with an elaborate base, bearing the name, services, and location of the company. A diadem bears the crest of a Gryphon salient armed, gules, holding an escutcheon Argent, a garter, gules. The escutcheon is surrounded by smoke-like dark shading and the whole is surrounded by a thin black border. 2) In black ink on light blue or gray paper, the ticket consists of an elaborate coin or medallion with trefoils in the four corners, bearing the name and services of the company. An escutcheon in the center of the medallion bears the address of the business. The blunted corners of the ticket result in an octagonal shape. 48. A simple border frames the text. 50. [Bookplate for Dunham Ladies’ College] Grey ink on cream paper. It features a border, double-lined. Within border, at the top, sits the title of the college in Germanic lettering. Directly beneath this title sits a curlicue line (centred), followed by the purpose and date that the plate was issued. Within the bottom half of the plate is four information lines, for prize recipient, donor, recipient, and principal signature. All of these information lines contain handwritten responses in faded black ink. 51. [Bookplate for Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski] The coat of arms consists of a shield charged with an upright rake on a gold field, topped with a helmet and feathers. The ribbon under the shield contains the owner’s name. 52. [Bookplate by James Gourlay Gray] Metallic brown black ink on cream paper. Border of two thin black lines with floral and leafy decorative features on the left and right sides. Latin script printed at the top of the bookplate in capitalized font with curling serif. An inner border surrounds two images. The top image has a black background with four white shining stars in the background. In the centre is a half circle strip with curled sends over marbled colouring, all of which surrounds sheet music. On top of the sheet music is a small harp-like instrument with horns protruding from it. At the top of the heart is a candle holder with smoke swirling from the top. On the outer left-hand side of the half-circle decoration is a reclining woman styled like a classical status in a draping dress. She is holding a pan flute in her right hand. On the right hand side, another similarly styled woman is reclining and holding a paint easel with several brushes in her left hand. Both women are barefooted. The bottom image has a thick marbled border. Within the border is a curlicue decoration, in the centre of which is an image of a work desk. There is a photograph hanging on the wall behind the desk. The desk itself is quite cluttered and features many photographs, papers, and books. The walls have decorative wall paper and there are various wall hangings. Below that section are two horizontal strips of different decorations. The top stripe has a dark snake like curving pattern, the borders of which are decorated with stylized, pointed lines. Thin white stripes are at the top and bottom of the horizontal strip. A row of small white dots separates this pattern from the next strip, which is a series of floral leaves curling in a line to meet at the centre. Below that, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in capitalized serif font with extra stylizing on the “A”s. 53. [Bookplate for Harry Hereford by J. B. C.] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The image depicts the surface of a writing credenza which has a small drawer with a twisted handle on its front edge. The surface of the desk holds a closed vellum-bound book. To the left of the book is a small pile of stamped, addressed letters and a single candlestick with a lit candle. To the right of the book sits an inkwell with a quill pen resting in it. The entire scene is framed by two line borders ; the interior line is thicker than the exterior one. 54. [Bookplate for J. H. Gill] Black ink on brown paper. Decorated arch at top is inscribed with school motto. Within the arch we see the gable and roof of the school. Below this is text enclosed by decorated border. Lamb in a circle at very bottom. 55. [Bookplate for Henry Gilbert Wintle] In black ink. No escutcheon. Straight crest wreath charged with a stag, lodged, proper, on grass, with a three-leaved twig in its mouth. 56. [Bookplate for Sir Robert Peel] In black ink. Armorial bookplate. Argent (silver) three sheaves of as many arrows proper, banded gules (red). On a chief azure (blue) a bee volant, or (gold). Crest of a demi-lion rampant argent, gorged with a collar azure, charged with three bezants, holding between the paw a shuttle, or. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 57. [Bookplate for Lesslie M. Sweetnam by F. F. H.] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate shows a figure reading a book while sitting at a roll top desk with his / her back facing the viewer. The desk is flanked on either side by full bookcases and is topped by a reading lamp, additional books, and a small picture frame. Two framed objects hang on the wall above the desk. 58. [Bookplate] A coat of arms with mantling: Quarterly, 1st and 4th azure, 2 bars dancetty or, in chief 3 bezants ; 2nd and 3rd azure, a fess engrailed argent, surmounted by another, not engrailed, gules, charged with 3 roses argent, between as many swans, proper. Above the coat of arms are two crests: left is a swan gorged, wings displayed and inverted, on a wreath ; right is a bull at gaze, gorged and on a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a ribbon containing the Latin motto. 59. [Bookplate] This heraldic bookplate is printed on cream paper with dark brown ink, and consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with three church bells, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a helmet at three quarters profile in esquire form, with mantling radiating from it. Above the helmet is a straight wreath crested by the head of a lion in profile. Below the crest is a banner, with Latin motto within. 60. [Bookplate] A lion rampant holding a stemmed (slipped) rose above the entwined letters G or C and H, through which is woven a banner with the Latin phrase.
