[Bookplate for Francis Fortescue Knottesford] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are azure (blue), a bend engrailed, or (gold), coticed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three are argent, cross engrailed, gules (red), in canton cinquefoil, azure (blue). The second pale is parted per quarter, in quarter one, a barry of eight, argent and vert (green), charged with a gryphon, rampant, segreant. Quarter two is argent, with a chevron, ermine, fimbrated sable (black), with two canons placed two over one around the chevron. Quarter three is argent, with a chevron, sable, charged with a bird displayed. Quarter four is azure charged with a lion rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a tyger passant atop a peer helmet. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing text. 42. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on off-white paper with an adhesive backing. The image depicts a stylized scene of a laborer in a field. The figure stands with his face in profile and in shadow with the shoulders and torso turned toward the viewer. He wears a plaid shirt and a rounded black hat with a flat brim. In his left hand the figure holds the handle of a long scythe, which rests on his left shoulder with the blade extending behind. In his right hand he carries a bushel of wheat. The foreground contains stylized stalks of wheat while the background depicts rolling hills and rounded clouds. In the middle ground there are more fields with a house positioned to the right of the figure. 43. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on orange-yellow paper with an adhesive backing. Crest features half a fish hauriant showing a fin, gills, and a head with teeth atop a crest-wreath. Sable shield charged with three of the aforementioned fish heads two over one and an argent insecutcheon. There is a ribbon-like banner with the motto below the shield with curling ends. Each side of the ribbon is angled towards a downward point. On the left side is text in capitalized black serif-font. The right side of the ribbon overlaps the left and has text in the same font. Below the motto, the owner’s name is written in curling sentence-case font. 45. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 46. [Bookplate for George Benson Strutt] This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), containing a chevron, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and charged with three cross crosslets fitchy, or (gold). Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, and a cubit arm habited (vert [green] sleeve and ermine cuff) containing a cross crosslet fitchy, argent (silver), and holding a rolled scroll. Above the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for George Charles Williamson] Executed in black ink on white paper, the text is surrounded by a double-lined border in which the inside line is thinner than the outside line. 48. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines. In the bottom left of the bookplate, the creator’s name is printed in small, black, sentence case, serif font. 49. [Bookplate for George R. Maxwell] Heraldic bookplate. Two rampant stags support an argent shield. At the centre of the shield is a two-headed black eagle with its wings and legs spread and its heads turned to opposite sides. On the chest of the eagle is a square with a black X. "Reviresco" I flourish again. 50. [Bookplate for George Wilbraham] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per pale, the sinister half azure, a bend, argent, engrailed, two bendlets, or, on either side. The dexter half parted per cross. The first and fourth quarters, argent, bendy of seven, argent and azure. The second and third quarters, barry of five, argent and azure, a canton, sable, with a wolf. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a wolf. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 51. [Bookplate for Gordon Elliott] In blue ink on white paper, text within a single blue line border. 52. [Bookplate for Hans Hjordis Hygen by E. B.] The bookplate's central image is done in relief of a house with a walkway and trees of to the sides of the house. The house appears to be a prosperous house with two chimneys and several floors. A mountain with whitcaps sits in the background and several stars are seen above them. 53. [Bookplate for Hart House Library by J. E. H. MacDonald] Brown ink on tan paper. Plate divided into three sections. At the top, the University of Toronto shield sits to the left of the text. In the middle is a picture of Hart House as seen from above. [Bookplate for Henry Augustus Sims] In red ink on white paper, a border that contains red and black text and black decorative designs. Within the border, in black ink, there is an angled Escutcheon parted per pale. The dexter side is gules (red), containing a chevronel or (gold) with two mullets of six points, pierced, in chief, and one battle axe in base. The sinister side is quartered per cross by a cross argent (silver), with the dexter chief and sinister base quarters in azure (blue) and the sinister chief and dexter base quarters in gules. In each quarter save the sinister base there is a pheon proper. Above the Esctucheon, the mantling is topped by a wreath, from which a lion emerges, holding a battle axe. Below the Escutcheon is a banner bearing the motto, 'Ferio Tego.'. 56. [Bookplate for Henry Christopher Wise] In black ink. No escutcheon. A straight crest wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, holding a damask rose, stalked leaved and seeded, in the mouth a snake that is entwined about the body. 57. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 58. [Bookplate for Holford Walker] Pictured in black ink on white paper, is a bird close enclosed within a serpent ouroboros on a crest wreath with mantling extending from it, above a shield argent (silver) ; a bordure, argent ; with eleven quaterings. 59. [Bookplate for Holland House] In black ink , a chapeau crimson (red), lined with ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), a fox sejant, or (gold), floating above is a coronet of a baron. 60. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross.
