[Bookplate for C. Haight] A decorative border surrounds the text that features two quotes. 2. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours. The cost of subscription is given in cents, dating this bookplate after 1858, the year in which currency decimalization came into force in Canada. 3. [Bookplate for Ecole Normale Jacques-Cartier and Joseph Denis by John Henry Walker] An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in three fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. A border surrounds the text and insignia. The entire plate is printed in black ink. The paper includes a watermark. 4. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 5. [Bookplate for Ecole Modele Jacques-Cartier by John Henry Walker] Black ink on cream paper. An insignia tops the bookplate, featuring a radiant cross and open book above a beaver and surrounded by maple leaves. Included is a banner with a motto. Below, the name of the school and a pre-formatted prize text is printed in two fonts. The class, date, name of the recipient and signature of the principal are handwritten in black ink. An ornate scrolled border surrounds the text and insignia. The printer is listed at the bottom. 6. [Bookplate for Drysdale’s Lending Library by W. Drysdale & Co.] Black ink on cream paper. An ornate border surrounds text printed in multiple fonts. The book number is left blank. 7. [Bookplate for P. Gagnon] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a beaver lying on a crest-wreath. There are maple leaf branches extending from both sides of the beaver. The beaver is surrounded by a half-circle border with the motto in black, capitalized sans-serif font written across the arc. The shield is divided per fess, with the top half being further divided per pale and the upper left hand portion is divided into three horizontal sections. The topmost left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with two fleurs-de-lis. The middle left hand section is argent with sable stripes charged with a lion passant. The bottom left hand section is argent with sable dots charged with three maple leaves connected at the stem. The upper right hand side is argent charged with two pieces of equipment, one atop the other, and a pair of scissors below. The equipment has a small curved bottom with two long, curving handles on top with a spike pointing through the lower end of the handles. Below the top half is a thin black banner with white capitalized sans-serif text. Below the banner is an image of a natural forest and coastal landscape with a ship with two tall masts in the water. On the coast, there are people, possible colonizers, interacting. A large cross has been erected on the coast on the right hand side of the image. The dexter supporter and sinister supporter are moose standing a curling ribbon with text in capitalized black sans-serif font. 8. [Bookplate for A. C. Jones by Clare Victor Dwiggins] Black ink on cream paper. The border of the bookplate consists of intertwined thorny and leafy vines with thicker leaves in the corners. The top left and right corners also feature rose-like flowers. Near the top of the border, vines extend from the left and right sides towards the center of the bookplate design. Capitalized, black, whimsical font is at the top of the bookplate. Dots surround some of the words and some letters are looping or intertwined. In the center of the bookplate, a tall, thin, beautiful woman in a whimsical fluted dress stands atop a closed book. The woman’s hair is done up and decorated with flowers. Flowers also decorate the top of the dress, the bottom of which features a spiral pattern. The dress is cinched at the waist with a belt and similarly cinched around the thighs with a large ribbon tied in a bow. The bottom of the dress extends outwards and there is a lacey layer underneath. The woman is wearing slip-on high heels with bows on the front. Next to the large book the woman is standing on are two books, one small one in front of the book sitting on its side. The other book is standing upright and is behind the large book. The woman is bending towards a small, naked cherub with a single curl atop its head and feathery wings. The cherub is standing in front of a book open and standing on its pages with the spine up. The cherub is also holding an open book and looking smilingly up at the woman. Behind the woman, the bookplate creator’s name is printed in curling, capitalized, black font. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is printed in black, gothic, sentence case font. 9. [Bookplate for Margaret M. Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on textured cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, listing to the right in a swell of water. The ship is contained within a circular border containing four quatrefoil points. Above, the phrase ‘Ex Libris’ is displayed within a scrolled banner across the top of the bookplate and the circle is framed by hanging garlands of varied types of flowers and ribbons. Below, a shelf depicts a row of bound books that part at the middle, with a blank sheet of paper and a feather quill resting in an inkwell. Below this, ‘Margaret M. Howard’ is written within a large scroll banner that is framed by thorny vines of roses. 10. [Bookplate for Montreal & District Brotherhood Federation, W. Bourdeu, S James United Brotherhood, and T. B. Macaulay] Black ink on white paper. A border consisting of a thick black line with thinner black lines surrounds the bookplate. At the top of the bookplate, there is a circular decoration with a black border. Inside the border is a plain section with rounded edges on the outer rim. Inside that section is a thick black circle with text printed in capitalized, sans serif white font. A thin white border separates the thick black section from an image of a black and white globe with cross sections. In the middle of the globe, a circle shows two hands with black sleeves shaking. Above the hands is a sun with beams. Below the hands, letters are printed in capitalized, sans serif block letters with a black border. Underneath the circular design, font is printed in capitalized, serif, black, font. On the next line is a dotted line. Below the dotted line is the same font in a smaller size followed by another dotted line. The same font, but larger, is printed on the next line. In the next line the font is smaller and then larger and smaller again in the subsequent two lines. Below these lines, text is printed in bold, black, small sans serif font. Underneath this line, text is printed in small, sentence case, black, serif font and is followed by a dotted line. 11. [Bookplate for Mechanics Institute of Montreal] Black ink. The seal of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal is located in the upper portion of the bookplate with pre-printed lines for library information below. The seal contains an escutcheon quartered per saltire with argent (silver) and gules (red) backgrounds. The chief quarter features a train car, the sinister quarter a couped arm with hammer, the base quarter a lever and the dexter quarter a telescope. 12. The seal contains an escutcheon quartered per saltire with argent (silver) and gules (red) backgrounds. Though difficult to decipher, the seal appears to declare ; Knowledge is Power, in a framed ring at the fess point. 13. [Bookplate for Norman H. Friedman by A. G. Racey] Brown ink on cream paper. A man is seated in a wing chair by the fire, wearing slippers and reading a book ; his face is not visible but his pipe pokes out from behind the chair. A fire is roaring in a brick fireplace behind him, with a bust labeled 'Kipling' on the mantelpiece ; the mantel is inscribed with the words 'Be a reader but not a book keeper' with initials below the quote that appear to read A.G.A. In the foreground, there are piles of books and manuscripts and a small dog. 14. [Bookplate for Holland House] In black ink , a chapeau crimson (red), lined with ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), a fox sejant, or (gold), floating above is a coronet of a baron. 15. [Bookplate for Andrew Allan] In black ink on red paper, this bookplate features an ornate border surrounding text in the center. 16. The dexter chief and sinister base sections each consist of an azure (blue) saltier on argent (silver) ; the sinister chief and dexter base quarters are composed of a saltier argent on azure. The crest is a demi-talbot rampant, an arrow in its mouth, upon a wreath.
