[Bookplate for Stanley Harrod] Black ink on cream paper. The bookplate features an elaborate border. A thin black line outlines a thick black and white design featuring repeating white floral motifs in diamond shapes on a black background. A thin white border separates the border from the internal image. The image features a monk writing at a desk. The monk is in white clothes and the wooden desk and chair are black. The desk has a special stand for writing. Above the monk to the left is a window with the shutters open, showing several buildings, one of which is a tall tower, outside. There are trees amongst the buildings and a large fluffy cloud behind the tower. Inside the room, directly above the monk, are several bookshelves attached to the wall. There is some pottery on the top shelf and three rows of books, spines facing out, below. To the top right of the monk is another window with the shutters closed. The shutters appear wooden with round circles cut out of them. The walls and floors of the room are also wooden. On the floor to the right of the desk is a closed book. Below this image, surrounded by a thin white border, is a white rectangle with capitalized, black, serif font printed in it. The words are separated by centered black dots. Between this rectangle and the larger overall border are white, curling ribbons. 82. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod] Sepia ink on cream paper. A sketched front of a sailboat with three large sails is at the top of the image. Ribbons swirls around the ship’s sails as if in the wind. The sailboat is emerging from a cloud-like section that extends out into other images. A rounded horizontal oval shape with large, round extensions at the top left and top right corners surround the other image. There is a thick, round border surrounding the shape. On the left side, a naked woman is leaning backwards onto a mythical creature with a human-like fish head and a coiling snake body. The creature is lying on the border, with wide eyes looking at the back of the woman. The woman was long hair in a ponytail and is looking downwards. Her right arm extends backwards towards the creature and, similarly, her right knee is bent. Her left leg extends out to stand on part of the border. Behind her left foot, a piece of seaweed like foliage drapes off of the border. In the upper right hand corner are two naked women. One is holding onto the upper part of the border and looks down onto the other woman, who is reclining on the border. The woman on top appears to be a mythical creature with long, footless legs that twirl around the other woman and border. The woman has her hair in a ponytail. The woman on the bottom has darker hair and has her left knee bent, her right arm lying on the leg of the other woman, and her left arm raised in potential defense against the other woman. In the middle of the shape is a head portrait of Leonardo da Vinci as an old man. He is bald on top with long white hair and a long white beard. Underneath his beard, the name Leonardo is written in fine, sentence case cursive. Extending from behind Leonardo’s beard are paint brushes and other artist’s tools, crisscrossed. Below the image is a small circle, text written in larger, sentence case cursive, another small circle, and more text in the same font. 83. [Bookplate for Alfred C. Harmsworth] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a crest-wreath with a knight’s right arm extended and bent at the elbow. The arm is armoured with a point at the elbow and circular decorations on the rest of the arm. The hand clutches a sword that has gone through a small lion’s head from the chin through to the crown. The lion has whiskers, but no mane. Below the crest, the bookplate owner’s name is written in black, sentence case, gothic font. 84. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 85. [Bookplate for Joseph Edgar Guimont by Chalifour Ltée Journal “Le Nord”] Blue ink on cream paper. Capitalized, block, sans-serif letters are printed at the top of the bookplate. Below the text is gothic font in sentence case with a thin blue line framing it atop and below. In the center of the bookplate is an image of a right hand reaching out of a cloud to pour oil into an oil lamp with the flame burning. The lamp is elaborately decorated with floral and curlicue embellishments. The lamp sits atop a closed book with the spine facing out. The cloud extends behind the lamp and book as well. A thin blue line separates the image from sentence-case serif font and another thin blue line is below that text. Below the line is thin italicized font and a dotted line. At the bottom of the bookplate is a thin blue line directly above some smaller, sentence-case serif blue font. 86. [Bookplate for Gilbert Finlay Girdwood] Black ink on white paper. Argent and sable with a straight line down the middle. Left hand side is sable and argent per pale charged with three castle towers, two over one. Right hand side is argent, with a chevron engrailed sable. Chevron surrounded by three roundlets sable, two over one. Shield is wrapped in stylized bordure. At the top, is a crest featuring a demi-lion rampant guardant, tail extended holding a tree in its right paw. Lion sits on a crest-wreath. Below is a motto on a stylized banner with decorative ends. The bottom of the bookplate has typed cursive fond followed by serif font. 87. [Bookplate for James Scott Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a ship’s steering wheel with stringy foliage extending from the left and leafy foliage extending from the right atop a crest-wreath. Shield is sable and party per fess. Top section is charged with a white cross in the center with a fleur-de-lis on either side. The bottom section is charged with a white ship steering wheel that is identical to the one in the crest. The motto is printed on curling ribbon below the shield in capitalized, serif, white block font with black outline. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name Is printed in sentence case, black, serif font. 88. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Green ink on white paper. Thin green border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded green font. Below the letters is text in pseudo-gothic sentence-case font. Underneath that text is a small green circle with two lines extending from its left and right. Below is text in the previous pseudo-gothic font in a larger size. There are several images underneath the text. There is a line of three images: an open book with curling pages in the center with a six-pointed star on either side. The left star has a plus sign in the middle and the right star has a question mark in its center. Three more images are below: a green owl on a branch in the center with lit oil lamps on either side. The lamps each point inwards towards the owl and sit on thin green lines. Below the images is a thin green oval border that is straight on the top and bottom sides. The shield has sable stripes and is charged with three white fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The shield is divided per fess. The dividing section is curved and argent with sable stripes. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, serif, black font. The words are separated by black dots. Below the motto, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in large, black, sentence case, cursive font. 90. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. Thin black border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded black font. Capitalized black serif-font written inside the border around an image. Image depicts a wooden house with a road in front. There are several clouds in the sky. There is a large tree in front of the side of the house, with the branches of another tree in the top right corner. The house has a wooden fence. In the foreground in the bottom right corner is grass. 92. [Bookplate for William Swift Keyser] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features an esquire helm with elaborate mantling extending out along both sides of the bookplate. Extended, feathery wings rise out of the top of the helm. The helm sites directly on the shield, which is divided per pale and per rounded chevron. The three parts of the shield are different colour. The upper left portion is argent, the upper right side portion has vertical sable lines, and the rounded bottom portion has horizontal sable lines. Sitting atop the rounded bottom portion is a king. The man is sitting cross-legged and holds a sword in his left hand and a rounded vessel with a cross on top in his right hand. The man is wearing a crown and a cape. He has long hair and a small beard. Below the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed on a curling ribbon in capitalized, bold, serif font. Underneath the ribbon, text is printed in sentence case, thin, cursive font followed by a line of small black dots. There is a black ink smudge on the bottom right corner of the bookplate. 93. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by S. Harrod] Black ink on white paper. The bookplate image is surrounded by a border consisting of wide ribbons at the top and bottom wrapped around twisted rope on the left and right sides. The rope ends are knotted with three beaded and then frayed ends extending on each end of the rope. The top ribbon has printed, black, stylized gothic font in sentence case. Some text is separated by clusters of four diamonds. Inside the border is an image depicting a frigate with two masts and large sails billowing in the wind. Ribbons extend form the top of the sails. A smaller sail on a smaller mast is at the front of the ship. The ship is in an ocean with several waves. The bottom ribbon is more elaborated curling than the top ribbon. It has printed, black, stylized font in sentence case, but is smaller in size. Below the ribbon to the left and right is thin, sans-serif, capitalized font. 94. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod by T. Z.] Black ink on white paper. Image has overall appearance of watercolour. There is text printed in sans serif capitalized black font in the top left and top right corners. The bookplate background is a multihued pale gray. The image depicts a street in Bruges. A stone church is in the background, with a tall, pointed tower. A lower part of the church is visible, with upper level balconies visible. The windows are decorated at the top with crosses. To the right of that part of the building is the roof of another building, also decorated with crosses at the uppermost part of the roof. A couple other towers are visible in the distance behind these buildings. At the forefront of the image is a dark bridge/archway. Through the archway are several trees in the church yard. The arch itself has a round decorative feature in the center. The left hand side of the arch is lighter, with two round stone towers extending up. The central part of the bridge/arch and the buildings on the right hand side are in shadow. The building on the right hand side is shorter and squarer, with a window by the top of the arch and a rounded door on the ground. There is shading in front of the archway that then lightens. In the lightened portion is printed capitalized, black text in serif font. In the bottom right corner are overlapping letters, a Z and a T. 95. [Bookplate for J.E.G. Bibliothèque] Black ink on white paper. Thin black border is straight on the left, right, and bottom sides and rounded on top. Three capitalized letters are printed in stylized, rounded black font.
