[Bookplate for M. Howard] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features a lion statant guardant standing atop a ledge decorated with a white ribbon and five black diamond shapes. The lion has a collar with two black geometric decorations. There is a Gentlemen and Esquires helm with mantling. There is no shield. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon in lower case, black, gothic font. The name of the bookplate owner is written below in sentence case cursive. 82. [Bookplate for William Molesworth] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an annexed escutcheon, vair (argent [silver] and azure [blue]), with a martlet at the honour point ; and an inescutcheon, argent with a sinister hand, couped and gules (red) at the fess point. Baronets of the United Kingdom bear the red hand of Ulster. The escutcheon's bordure is gules, and contains eight cross crosslets, or (gold), three over two over three. Atop the escutcheon is a helmet of a baronet, front facing with beaver open. The helmet is crested by a curved wreath and a a sinister arm, vambraced, and holding a cross crosslet, or. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 83. [Bookplate for J. Hunt Stanford] An armorial bookplate printed in black ink on white paper. A buck couped argent (silver) with antlers or (gold) gorged gules (red) with a crest wreath, argent and azure (silver and blue), sits on a visored helm facing dextor with argent mantling. The shield: argent three bars azure, and in the dextor canton azure an arm or clenched with sword. The motto, 'Labore et honore' hangs below. 84. [Bookplate for Charles Theodore Hart] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features the head of a stag in profile on a crest-wreath. The shield is pointed at the top left, top right, and bottom corners. The bottom of the shield curves to a central point. The shield is argent with a sable chevron charged with two stars on the top left and top right sides. The stars are white with black shading and a black circle in the center. Below the chevron the shield is charged with a springing stag. Below the shield the motto is printed on a ribbon in capitalized, serif font. Underneath the motto is the bookplate owner’s name in curling, italicized font. 85. [Bookplate for John Jenkins D.D.] Black ink on white paper. The crest features a white lion passant reguardant with black spots standing on the top portion of a stone castle tower. The tower sits on a crest-wreath. The shield is divided per cross. Around the shield is a curling border with leafy adornments and spirals on the sides. The border is thicker on the left, right, and bottom portion. The border does not cover the entire shield ; there are gaps at the top left and right corners and at the center of the base. The top left and bottom right sections of the shield are identical. They have a black and white striped background and are charged with a white chevron decorated with black dots. They are also charged with three white fleur-de-lis, two over one around the chevron. The top right and bottom left sections of the shield are also identical. They have a white background with black dots and are charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. Below the shield, the motto is printed on a ribbon with leafy ends that match the shield’s decorative border. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed underneath the motto in thin, sentence-case, black, cursive font. 86. [Bookplate for John Lewis] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with an arm clutching a fasces and two mullets on either side. Quarters two and three are gules with a saltier, argent (silver), charged with four cinque foil. Above the escutcheon rests a crest of a griffin head upon a straight wreath. The escutcheon is bordered by stylized mantling, and below, the owner's name. 87. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 88. [Bookplate for Thomas Leland] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), with a fess, sable (black). The fess is charged with a lion passant, and an escallop on either side. The upper part of the escutcheon is charged with three sheaves of wheat, with three stocks apiece. Upon the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a gryphon, possibly an opinicus, with wings elevated and addorsed. In the creature's beak are three stocks of wheat. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 89. [Bookplate for John Lomar] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale ; on the left, or (gold), and the right, sable (black). The quarters have a bend cotised, ermine, charged with three escallops apiece. Quarter two is argent (silver), charged with a gryphon rampant. Quarter three is argent, with a cross, sable, with engrailed borders. The quarter is charged with four roundlets, two over two (cantoned). Above the escutcheon is a curved wreath, charged with a crown vallary, and a demi-lion, its arms erect, clutching an escallop. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 90. [Bookplate for Henry Lloyd] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bordure bezant (or, gold) engrailed. The shield is charged with a lion rampant, or. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a 'pelican in her piety' (a pelican feeding her young). Below the straight wreath hangs a banded scarf, as well as a garland of leaves, which hang about the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon are two branches tied together which frame the lower half of the crest. 91. [Bookplate for Wm. Read] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale gules (red) and argent (silver). The first half is charged with a bend wavy, charged with three birds. The second is charged with a chevron, with three roundlets, or (gold), one over two. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a bird. Between the wreath and escutcheon is a garter, and in place of mantling, stylized tree branches radiate from behind the escutcheon. The base of the tree continues below the escutcheon, and two banners are placed at the forefront. The first banner has Latin motto within, the second, bookplate owner's name. 92. [Bookplate for Harold Hampson] This bookplate's design features a collared greyhound's head, erased, above a mural coronet. Below a banner waves containing the originator's Latin motto. 93. [Bookplate for Vincent Massey and Alice Massey by Alexander Scott Carter] Black ink on white paper. This coat of arms is described in great detail by the Royal Heraldry Society of Canada (RHSC), in their 'Members' Roll of Arms,' under the entry for the Rt. Hon. Charles Vincent Massey. They write: 'The arms argent [silver], on a chevron sable [black] between three lozenges of the last, each charged with a fleur de lis of the first, three stags' heads erased or [gold] ; on a canton azure [blue], a representation of the crest of Canada as an honourable augmentation. The crest out of an antique crown or, a bull's head sable, armed gold, charged on the neck with a lozenge argent, thereon a fleur de lis also sable.' This bookplate adheres to the design described above by the RHSC, though the 'honourable augmentation,' of the Canadian crest in dexter chief, does not appear in this escutcheon. 94. [Bookplate for Baron de Hirsch Institute and Hebrew Benevolent Society] This bookplate is in two parts: One to show ownership by the library, the other to show who made the presentation of the book to the library. 1) In black ink on white or cream paper. The bookplate consists of lines for recording location information, the seal of the institute [two concentric rings with the name and dates of the institute surrounding the inner circle, which contains a Star of David surrounding some Hebrew text], and other lines for noting the number and receipt date of the book surrounding the library name. 2) In black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding black text. 95. [Bookplate for William Martin] In black ink on cream paper, a double border surrounding a coat of arms. The coat of arms is Argent two bars Gules six bezants 3 and 3, with ornate mantling especially to the upper right and left of the shield, surrounding the crest of an eagle displayed over a wreath. Below the coat of arms is a draped manner with the Latin motto and below that is the name in a Gothic script. 96. [Bookplate for Dilys Jones] Printed in black ink on faded red paper. Heraldic crest is top centre. Text is surrounded by a thin black border. 97. [Bookplate for Rufus Hawtin Hathaway by J. E. MacDonald] Printed in black ink on cream-coloured paper. An interior scene depicts a robed and tonsured monk sitting in a study room. The monk is seated with his head resting in his right hand on the far side of a lectern that holds three open, vellum-bound manuscripts. Behind the monk, an open wooden cupboard is topped by a niche shelf with many closed, bound vellum manuscripts and a human skull. To the far left, there is a recessed bench seat at a diamond paned window containing several objects, including a crucifix, an hour glass, and another manuscript. The entire scene is framed by a border that contains the owner’s name and motto, as well as decorative vine-leaf scrollwork. 98. [Bookplate for William Griffin and Florence Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Brown ink on cream paper. The bookplate has a perforated border with rounded corners. At the top left and right corners are flowers with four square petals and five leaves extending below. The floral decorations are quite simple, featuring only small lines. Between the two flowers is curling text in sentence case followed by five leaves with stems curling to the left and the tip of the leaves curling to the right. In the centre of the bookplate an open book. The book has enforced corners and a clasp on the cover. On the open left page is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. On the open right page is a cat sitting on a crest wreath. A link from a chain extends from the base of the book’s spine to attach to a sign with a thick white border. Atop a speckled background is capitalized and lower case font with stylized serif accents. Two links of chain are attached to this sign from below in the left and right corners. Between the chains are stylized curling, accents meeting in a decorative feature in the centre with a leaf extending downwards. Text is printed on the left and right hand side of the leaf. There is a handwritten note in pencil in the bottom right hand corner. 99. [Bookplate for John William Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on white paper. Perforated edges with round corners surround the bookplate. The bookplate is surrounded by an incomplete border of two black lines that do not connect at the top. There are spaced out diamond shapes on the border with black circular centres. At the top, the border folds into triangles at the left and right corners. Each corner has a square flower with four petals and one leaf with a darker background. The border frames an image with a rounded pointed top. The image shows a desk with a window looking onto a moving steam engine. At the top of the image is a circle with a white border. In the centre on a gray background is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. The steam engine is outside the window in the centre of the bookplate with steam pouring out. The window has vertical and horizontal stripes with black circles at the intersections of the stripes. There is a curtain on either side of the window. Nothing sits on the window ledge, but on the desk in front is half of a lamp with a decorative, bell-shaped shade, eight books with different spine designs, an ink pot with a feather quill in it, and a workspace with several papers on it. Below the image is a black rectangle with capitalized white font. At the centre of the top and bottom of the rectangle is a slight downward facing point. Below the bottom point in black ink are the initials of the creator and the year of creation. 100. [Bookplate for George E. Longley by Francis Adams Sc.] Black ink on white paper with cropped corners. The crest features an arm grasping a dagger. The blade of the dagger has pierced the head of a bearded man that resembles a lion head. The arm is atop a crest-wreath. The wreath sits on a flower with a round center and 5 petals. To strips extend out of the flower across the front and back of a ribbon, connecting to the top of the shield. The ribbon extends straight out with curling ends. The motto is printed on the ribbon in black, capitalized, serif font. Shield is ermine with a black bend. Bend charged with three cheetah heads. Underneath the shield, the bookplate owner’s name is printed in elaborate gothic block font. The first letter of each part of the name is outlined with a black border, while the remaining letters are printed in black. Swirling lines and dots embellish the text. Below the name, a location is printed in smaller, sentence case, black serif font. Underneath this text is another swirling line with several dots, to the right of which text is printed in capitalized block serif letters with black outlines.
