[Bookplate for J. G. Chilcott] The text is in the centre of the bookplate, surrounded by a vine-like border. Four small flowers are in each corner of the border. The text 'TRURO' is bolded. 62. [Bookplate] A stylized floral border surrounds the text, which is written in several different fonts and is found in the middle of the bookplate. The word 'Catholic' is written in a curly font with the words 'Circulating Library' printed in Gothic below. The book number is printed underneath, and there is a line dividing the upper part of the text from the middle, which lists the library rules. Below the library rules is another line, and below this is a hand symbol which points to further information on the library hours. The cost of subscription is given in cents, dating this bookplate after 1858, the year in which currency decimalization came into force in Canada. 63. [Bookplate for Carleton Place High School] A border of small round stylized flowers surrounds the bookplate text. The first line is written in a font with a small dot in the letters 'C', 'O', and 'P'. The second line is written in a more ornate font. Under this line there is a small stylized flower similar to the ones that comprise the border. Under this is the typed word 'No.' with a line that is filled in by hand with a number. 64. [Bookplate for Congregational College of British North America] The bookplate has a geometric border with stylized flowers on the corners. Within the border, the text 'Congregational College' is in a Gothic typeface, and the words 'of British North America' are in a simple sans-serif. 65. [Bookplate for Congregational College of Canada] There is an elaborate border with geometric designs and stylized flowers, and within this at the top of the bookplate is the crest of the Congregational College of British North America. Under the crest, the words 'Library of the Congregational College of Canada' are written in several different fonts, with the words 'Congregational College' the largest and most prominent. Underneath this is a space for information to be entered, although it has been left blank. 66. [Bookplate for Congregational College of British North America] The bookplate has a geometric border with stylized flowers on the corners. Within the border, the text 'Congregational College' is in a Gothic typeface, and the words 'of British North America' are in a simple sans-serif. 67. [Bookplate for Congregational College of British North America] The bookplate has a stylized border of geometric patterns. Within the border, the words 'Congregational College' are written in Gothic typeface, with 'of British North America' written in a plainer font. 68. [Bookplate for Erskine Church Sabbath School] Black ink on cream paper. A slim double-lined border houses the title, book number space, and borrowing policy of the library. Between the title and book number space is a horizontal dividing line. In the number space, a number has been stamped in blue ink. 69. [Bookplate for Library of Diocesan Theological College] Black ink on cream paper. In the upper-portion rests the Library of Diocesan Theological College seal. Within the oval-shaped seal are two shields (one in front of the other) with an anchor on the front of the more forward shield. Above the shield is a Western-style mitre. On the perimeter of the seal is Latin phrasing. Directly under the seal is an information line, followed by the title of the library and location city in English text. At the very bottom are two additional unfilled information lines. 70. [Bookplate for Oeuvre des Bons Livres de Montreal] Printed in black ink on cream paper, an intricate border evocative of a tabernacle and constructed of geometric repeating patterns. 71. [Bookplate for Henry James Grasett] Black ink on cream paper. Crest features bow loaded with arrow aimed to the left. Feathers stretch outwards on either side of the base of the bow on a crest-wreath. Shield is argent and sable per saltire, divided with a sable cross. Top and bottom quarters are argent charged with a plant with round top and brush head. Feathery leaves appear at either side of the base. Top feature has two sable stylized decorations featuring roundels three over two atop three lines connected at the top that separate outwards at the bottom. Four of the same decorations are featured in the bottom quarter. Left and right quarters are sable charged with five point stars and a stylized design element similar to those in the top and bottom quarters, but thicker and in argent. The shield is surrounded by a stylized border decorated with various curls. Below the shield, the motto is written in capitalized block letters on ribbon with elaborately curled blackening ends. 72. [Bookplate for Glazebrook] Black ink on cream paper. Design has some heraldic features. At the top of the bookplate is a banner featuring black, serif, capitalized font. The banner sits atop a stylized castle with multiple towers and a circular wall. Behind the castle to the left and right extend wing-like features. In front of the castle is a shield argent with sable dots charged with a sable lion passant. Shield has a sable chief charged with three argent fleurs-des-lis. Armorial helm with mantling is topped with a sable demi-lion rampant wearing a crown atop a crest-wreath. The bottom of the bookplate features a rectangle designed to look like stylized wooden panels. It features large, capitalized, bold black serif font. The words are separated with floral decorations, each of a varying design. The first flower is found with six more pointed petals, a black centre, and two leaves. The second flower is smaller and rounder, but of similar design to the previous one also with two leaves. The last floral decoration looks like a maple leaf with a simple stem. 73. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 74. [Bookplate for Margaret M. Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on textured cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, listing to the right in a swell of water. The ship is contained within a circular border containing four quatrefoil points. Above, the phrase ‘Ex Libris’ is displayed within a scrolled banner across the top of the bookplate and the circle is framed by hanging garlands of varied types of flowers and ribbons. Below, a shelf depicts a row of bound books that part at the middle, with a blank sheet of paper and a feather quill resting in an inkwell. Below this, ‘Margaret M. Howard’ is written within a large scroll banner that is framed by thorny vines of roses. 75. [Bookplate for Stanley Harrod] Sepia ink on cream paper. A sketched front of a sailboat with three large sails is at the top of the image. Ribbons swirls around the ship’s sails as if in the wind. The sailboat is emerging from a cloud-like section that extends out into other images. A rounded horizontal oval shape with large, round extensions at the top left and top right corners surround the other image. There is a thick, round border surrounding the shape. On the left side, a naked woman is leaning backwards onto a mythical creature with a human-like fish head and a coiling snake body. The creature is lying on the border, with wide eyes looking at the back of the woman. The woman was long hair in a ponytail and is looking downwards. Her right arm extends backwards towards the creature and, similarly, her right knee is bent. Her left leg extends out to stand on part of the border. Behind her left foot, a piece of seaweed like foliage drapes off of the border. In the upper right hand corner are two naked women. One is holding onto the upper part of the border and looks down onto the other woman, who is reclining on the border. The woman on top appears to be a mythical creature with long, footless legs that twirl around the other woman and border. The woman has her hair in a ponytail. The woman on the bottom has darker hair and has her left knee bent, her right arm lying on the leg of the other woman, and her left arm raised in potential defense against the other woman. In the middle of the shape is a head portrait of Leonardo da Vinci as an old man. He is bald on top with long white hair and a long white beard. Underneath his beard, the name Leonardo is written in fine, sentence case cursive. Extending from behind Leonardo’s beard are paint brushes and other artist’s tools, crisscrossed. Below the image is a small circle, text written in larger, sentence case cursive, another small circle, and more text in the same font. 76. [Bookplate for William Griffin and Florence Griffin by Leslie Victor Smith] Brown ink on cream paper. The bookplate has a perforated border with rounded corners. At the top left and right corners are flowers with four square petals and five leaves extending below. The floral decorations are quite simple, featuring only small lines. Between the two flowers is curling text in sentence case followed by five leaves with stems curling to the left and the tip of the leaves curling to the right. In the centre of the bookplate an open book. The book has enforced corners and a clasp on the cover. On the open left page is a griffin rampant on a crest-wreath. On the open right page is a cat sitting on a crest wreath. A link from a chain extends from the base of the book’s spine to attach to a sign with a thick white border. Atop a speckled background is capitalized and lower case font with stylized serif accents. Two links of chain are attached to this sign from below in the left and right corners. Between the chains are stylized curling, accents meeting in a decorative feature in the centre with a leaf extending downwards. Text is printed on the left and right hand side of the leaf. There is a handwritten note in pencil in the bottom right hand corner. 77. [Bookplate for William Ralph Howard by Leslie Victor Smith] Black ink on cream colored paper. The image depicts a tall ship at sea with all sails unfurled, in a swell of water, with a large cumulous cloud in the background. The image is framed by a length of rope that circles the entire bookplate. Below, a heraldic device is displayed in a circular frame. A broken ionic order column is in the center, with the top half of the column resting on the right side of the base and an oval shield with a flower on it leaning on the left side of the base. At the bottom of the bookplate, the owner’s name is presented in a solid-colored shield. The rope frame meets at both sides of the shield: on the left, the rope holds an anchor and on the right it holds a ship lantern. 78. [Bookplate for Paul Hahn by J. M.] Black and blue ink on cream paper. The rectangular border consists of three black lines of decreasing thickness towards the center. In the top right corner is a small butterfly with outspread wings with some decoration. Below the butterfly is text in stylized, capitalized, black serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed below in slightly different stylized font in a larger size. Underneath the owner’s name is a larger butterfly with more elaborate outstretched wings. The text forms a single column in the left-hand side of the bookplate. To the right of the text is a bookshelf that appears to extend down to the bottom of the bookplate. Books are stacked in various ways on the shelf, spines facing out. In front of the bookshelf is a cello. The base of the cello sits in the bottom center of the bookplate and the neck extends up towards the top right-hand corner. At the top of the cello sits a butterfly, less elaborate than the others, that has been coloured in with blue ink. To the right of the cello is a tall object extending up along the bookshelf. A section of papers, potentially sheet music, in a folder in the bottom right corner. In the bottom left corner, the bookplate creator’s initials are printed in capitalized, black, serif font surrounded by a thin black border. 79. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on off-white paper with an adhesive backing. The image depicts a stylized scene of a laborer in a field. The figure stands with his face in profile and in shadow with the shoulders and torso turned toward the viewer. He wears a plaid shirt and a rounded black hat with a flat brim. In his left hand the figure holds the handle of a long scythe, which rests on his left shoulder with the blade extending behind. In his right hand he carries a bushel of wheat. The foreground contains stylized stalks of wheat while the background depicts rolling hills and rounded clouds. In the middle ground there are more fields with a house positioned to the right of the figure. 80. [Bookplate for G. L’Heureux] Printed in black ink on orange-yellow paper with an adhesive backing.
