[Bookplate for George Wilkins] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with two swords saltier, and on a chief argent (silver) are three mullets pierced, sable (black). Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath charged with a demi-gryphon, rampant, regardant, segreant, gules, holding aloft a sword. Below the escutcheon is a banner displaying the originator's Latin motto. 22. [Bookplate for Gilbert Finlay Girdwood] Black ink on white paper. Argent and sable with a straight line down the middle. Left hand side is sable and argent per pale charged with three castle towers, two over one. Right hand side is argent, with a chevron engrailed sable. Chevron surrounded by three roundlets sable, two over one. Shield is wrapped in stylized bordure. At the top, is a crest featuring a demi-lion rampant guardant, tail extended holding a tree in its right paw. Lion sits on a crest-wreath. Below is a motto on a stylized banner with decorative ends. The bottom of the bookplate has typed cursive fond followed by serif font. 23. [Bookplate for Gladys Lillian Boyd] In black ink. A partial globe resting on clouds surrounded by books and paper. Above is an old printing press on which is perched a bird with a half circle of sun rays surrounding it. 24. [Bookplate for Holford Walker] Pictured in black ink on white paper, is a bird close enclosed within a serpent ouroboros on a crest wreath with mantling extending from it, above a shield argent (silver) ; a bordure, argent ; with eleven quaterings. 25. [Bookplate for Hôpital Général d’Ottawa No. 6] Stamped in black ink on textured, yellowed paper. In the centre, a white cross is depicted on top of a mound of earth. At the centre of the cross, the Catholic icon of the Sacred Heart is depicted: a heart with a flame above it. From the earth, a vine of ivy grows and weaves around the cross. This image is framed by two banners above and below, which bear two phrases in French: “J’ÉTAIS MALADE ET VOUS M’AVEZ VISITE / JE SUIS L’ APPUI DU FAIBLE.” This is enclosed within a circle, which is framed by another circle with a scalloped edge that contains the identification: “SOEURS GRISES DE LA CROIX / OTTAWA.” The entire image is framed with a single black-line border of a wavy line with simple scrolled decorative marks at all four corners. 26. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base. Appearing at the bottom of the bookplate is another motto J'AIME LE MEILLEUR. 27. [Bookplate for Iser Steiman M.D. by A. N. T.] Black ink on cream paper. Man, no shoes, chest bare, book hugged against torso with left arm, while right arm holds open a book held at eye level. Sunlight illuminates the man. Deciduous tree in foreground. Hills in background. 28. [Bookplate for J.G. Grieve by William Walker Alexander] Black ink on cream paper. Border features two parallel thin black lines on the outside with a thicker black line for the inner border. The upper-right hand corner has a microscope in profile against a sun with radiant rays. The microscope sits on a striped platform that tapers down to a point. In the upper-left hand corner is an oil lamp with a burning flame sitting on the same striped, tapered platform. In the centre of the two images is a rectangle with an indented top half. A white border surrounds black and white stripes of inconsistent length. Printed, capitalized, serif black text is printed on top. Below is a scene of a desk in a corner. There are two paintings, one on each wall. The one on the left is a nature scene and the one on the right is a landscape with a house and natural elements. On the right of the second painting is a vertical calendar for December 1963 listing Sunday the 24th to Saturday the 30th. The desk has drawers on both sides and one in the centre, all with handles. On top of the desk in the foregrounded left side is a black telephone sitting face down in the retriever. Behind the phone is a tall, thin plant in a white, hour-glass shaped pot. Next to the plant is a lamp with a short, wide, curved shade. In the centre of the back of the desk are four books, spines facing out, between two bookends. To the right of the books is a tall, thin vase with a scalloped edge holding several leafy flowers. To the right of that vase, in the right corner of the desk, is an analogue clock set in an upright square. The clock is set to approximately 4:05. Foregrounded in the right corner of the front of the desk is a book open to the title page. Across the bottom of the bookplate is a banner with curled ribbon ends. On the banner is stylized gothic font. Below the banner is a decorative row of leaves. In the bottom left hand corner is a small white patch with initials printed in black ink. Handwritten note in pencil on the verso. 29. [Bookplate for James Bell] Centered text in black ink, with three fonts. 30. [Bookplate for James M. Wishart by Leslie Victor Smith] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a two line border surrounding a circular design of vines and leaves with the words 'EX LIBRIS' appearing at the top. In the upper third of the design at center appears a University of Toronto Medical School coat of arts bearing a skull and crossbones. Below the coat of arm to the left appears an open book and to the right appears a three-stringed harp. The initials of the designer, Leslie Victor Smith, and the date "1940" appear at the bottom of the design. Below the design appears the name of the owner. 31. [Bookplate for Jenkins] Black ink on cream paper. The crest features a furry lion passant reguardant standing atop a castle tower. The castle tower is above a crest-wreath. Elaborate, curling, feathery black and white mantling extends from the top of the shield and expands out along the sides. The shield is divided per pale. The left section has a white background with black dots and is charged with a black lion rampant reguardant. The right section of the shield is charged with a bird perched on a tree branch growing out of the ground. There is no background except for the branch and ground that is lighter on top and darker at the bottom. The motto is printed on a curling ribbon below the shield. There is shading on the ends of the ribbon. The motto is printed in capitalized, black, serif font. The bookplate owner’s name is printed in a more stylized, paler, capitalized, black serif font underneath the motto. 32. [Bookplate for Kennedy McIlwraith] Black ink on white paper. The image depicts the main entrance to University College at the University of Toronto. 33. [Bookplate for Lesslie M. Sweetnam by F. F. H.] Printed in black ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate shows a figure reading a book while sitting at a roll top desk with his / her back facing the viewer. The desk is flanked on either side by full bookcases and is topped by a reading lamp, additional books, and a small picture frame. Two framed objects hang on the wall above the desk. 34. [Bookplate for Louis Berger by Rene de Brem] In black ink. An open window looking out on a town and cathedral in front of clouds. An old man looking into a microscope with a skeleton and a nude woman (possibly Venus) looking over his shoulder. There are open books and a jar containing an indistinguishable object, possibly a fetus. 35. [Bookplate for Marjory Todd and John Todd] In black ink on white paper, a border which includes images of a book, an hourglass, and a sundial surrounds a view of a garden which contains birds and a birdbath, flowers, and in the distance, trees and a trellis. 36. [Bookplate for Norman M. Keith by W. W. A.] This bookplate's design features a lakeside camping scene with mountains visible in the distance. It is framed by Scottish thistles. Above the scene are three logos representing the Royal Army Medical Corps, the University of Toronto, and Johns Hopkins University. A globe and stack of books are featured in the lower left corner and a small escutcheon of the University of Toronto sits at the bottom centre of the design. 37. [Bookplate for Phileas Vercheres de Boucherville] Black text on blue paper, with a brown discoloration on the left side. 38.
