[Bookplate] This royal bookplate, in black ink, contains two shields surrounded by a border of floral branches and elaborately twisting rope. The dexter shield represents the Arms of the ducs de Berry (after 1376). This shield, azure (blue), with an embattled bordure, gules (red) is charged with three fleurs-de-lis, two over one. The sinister shield represents the coat of arms of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Above the two shields is a royal crown adorned with fleur-de-lis. 42. [Bookplate for Vincent Stuckey] In black in, this bookplate consists of and escutcheon divided per pale. The dexter half is divided per bend sinister, or (gold), azure (blue) and dove-tailed, and charged with a lion, rampant and ermine with a tail queue fourché. At the dexter chief of the half is an azure canton charged with a mascle, or. The sinister half of the escutcheon is identical to the dexter, except that at it also contains a crescent at middle chief. The escutcheon is crested by a straight crest wreath and a demi-lion with tail queue fourché, ermine and charged with a mascle, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 43. [Bookplate] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, azure (blue), a bend, or (gold), with three lions, cabossed, gules (red). On the field, two boujet, or. Above the shield is a straight crest wreath topped with a dog, sejant, or, on grass tethered to a battle axe. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 44. [Bookplate for Henry Christopher Wise] In black ink. No escutcheon. A straight crest wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, holding a damask rose, stalked leaved and seeded, in the mouth a snake that is entwined about the body. 45. [Bookplate for Henry Gilbert Wintle] In black ink. No escutcheon. Straight crest wreath charged with a stag, lodged, proper, on grass, with a three-leaved twig in its mouth. 46. [Bookplate for Thomas Jenings] In black ink. Argent, a chevron, gules (red), three cages two over one. Gryphon, couped, atop straight crest wreath, wings addorsed and elevated, cage hanging from open beak. On the dexter and sinister sides, two figures, nude, outside hands hold flowered mantling, inside hands point to chevron. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 48. [Bookplate for Thomas Le Marchant] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is divided in a paly of three, or (gold) and azure (blue). Dexter and sinister palys, or, are charged with a tree. While the center paly, azure, is charged with middle chief, a label and at the fess point a lion rampant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four are gules (red) and charged with three boar heads. Quarters two and three are argent (silver) on a chief, gules, charged with two mullets, argent. Above the crest is a straight wreath charged with a demi-lion, rampant, who clutches a scythe. The demi-lion is charged with two fleur-de-lis and below the escutcheon is a banner containing Le Marchant Thomas' Latin motto. 49. [Bookplate for Denis Le Marchant] In black ink. No Escutcheon. Ducal coronet, on top of which is an upside down cock leg. 50. [Bookplate] In black ink. Argent [White or Silver], charged with an oak tree. On a fess, azure [Blue], a crescent, between two molets. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath on which is a cubit arm, erect, issuing from a cloud, in the hand a branch of olive, all proper. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 51. [Bookplate for E. May Craig] Bookplate features a tall ship sailing on rough seas. Design contained within border, with bookplate owner name at base. 52. [Bookplate for Aylwin Library] In blue ink. An oval containing the text with an outer scalloped edge. 53. [Bookplate for James Bryce Allan] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per bend, dancetty. Bordure, azure [blue]. Above field, argent [white] and ermine, a stag, gules [red], erased, antlers, or [gold], and an annulet, or. Below field, gules, a crescent. Helm has mantling around a tilting helmet on top of which is a curved crest wreath with a dog, erased. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 54. [Bookplate for James Phinney Baxter] In black ink. This ex-libris includes a portrait of the originator in the upper-right-hand corner, identified by his name and geographic locale. The remaining two-thirds of the bookplate consist of a depiction of the interior of a library. In a section spanning the base of the bookplate is a cursive, printed motto and a hand-written book number. The printed text is drawn from the last two lines of the second stanza of a poem composed by Baxter, entitled, "The Library." 55. [Bookplate for R. J. A. Boreman] In black ink. This bookplate displays a bespectacled man, presumably the originator, reading a book by candle-light. With no tonal variation, he is set-off against a black background, framed with a thin, asymmetrical, ornate border. Above the profile-portrait is the originator's name, and below, his Latin motto and a separate component in which a book number has been stamped in red. 56. [Bookplate for George Grote] This bookplate features a meander patterned oval frame with an escutcheon divided per pale, or (gold) and argent (silver) and vert (green), charged with three trees. Above the frame is a single tree and below is a banner containing the owner's name along with many floral elements. 57. [Bookplate for Frederick Starr] Woodblock print consisting of six separate bookplate designs. From left to right, top to bottom, designs consist of: two butterflies in flight ; a single lobster a cherry tree branch in bloom ; two birds in flight around three stocks of bamboo two figures fan dancing ; three monkeys in the 'hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil' poses. Each design has two Japanese characters at top right and bottom left. 58. [Bookplate for Mechanics Institute of Montreal] Black ink. The seal of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal is located in the upper portion of the bookplate with pre-printed lines for library information below. The seal contains an escutcheon quartered per saltire with argent (silver) and gules (red) backgrounds. The chief quarter features a train car, the sinister quarter a couped arm with hammer, the base quarter a lever and the dexter quarter a telescope. 59. [Bookplate for Mechanics Institute of Montreal] Black ink. The seal of the Mechanics' Institute of Montreal is located in the upper portion of the bookplate with pre-printed lines for library information below. The seal contains an escutcheon quartered per saltire with argent (silver) and gules (red) backgrounds. The chief quarter features a train car, the sinister quarter a couped arm with hammer, the base quarter a lever and the dexter quarter a telescope. Though difficult to decipher, the seal appears to declare ; Knowledge is Power, in a framed ring at the fess point. 60. [Bookplate for Humberside Collegiate Institute] This bookplate's design features a quartered escutcheon, gules (red), azure (blue), and or (gold).
