[Bookplate for James F. Millar] In black ink, this bookplate consists of a slightly curved wreath and a demi-archer, nude. Above the crest is a banner containing the English motto. 42. [Bookplate for Edgell Wyatt-Edgell] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and containing an inescutcheon. The first and forth quadrants of the escutcheon are sable (black) with a fess, dancette and argent (silver), three eagles displayed, two over one and or (gold), and chief, or. The second and third quadrants are argent, with a sable chevron containing three roundlets bezant (gold), and cinque foil, two over one and gules (red). The inescutcheon is checky, or and gules, and contains a lion rampant guardant. Atop the escutcheon is a dexter helmet, closed with mantling flowing horizontally from its top. Above the mantling are two further crests. The dexter consists of a demi-lion rampant, embattled in or and sable, on a wreath, holding an inverted arrow in its dexter paw. The sinister crest consists of a demi-lion rampant on a wreath, holding the long stem of a cinque foil, gules, in both its paws. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 43. [Bookplate for Charles Gery Milnes] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly, and contains an inescutcheon at the fess point. The first and fourth quadrants of the escutcheon, azure (blue), contain a chevron, argent (silver), charged with three millrinds. The first quadrant differs from the fourth in that only two millrinds are visible, as one is covered by the inescutcheon, and it contains a canton at the dexter chief, or (gold), charged with a trefoil, sable (black). The second and third quadrants, gules (red), are charged with three lion heads, two over one, and contain a fess, argent and engrailed, charged with two escallopes, azure. The inescutcheon, gules, contains two bars, argent, charged with three mascles (open faced lozenge) each, gules ; and a canton at the dexter chief, or, charged with a roundlet, hurts (azure). The escutcheon's crest is a straight wreath, topped by a ducal coronet and an elephants head, dexter and erased, with tusks. 44. [Bookplate for Frank Marx Etting] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a chevron, gules (red). On the chevron are three roundlets, argent. The escutcheon is bordered by mantling, and crested by a dexter cubit arm holding a sword. Impaled on the sword is a boar's head. The boar's head is said to represent unflinching courage and fierceness on the battlefield. In Irish literature, it was symbolic of aggression and savegery, and symbolized the Devil. 45. [Bookplate for Foley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), containing a fess, sable (black) and engrailed, and three cinquefoil, two over one. The escutcheon is within a bordure, sable. The escutcheon is crested by a baron's coronet, on top of which is a straight crest wreath and a lion, rampant, holding a miniture of the same escutcheon. On either side of the central escutcheon are lion supporters, charged with five cinquefoil each. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 46. [Bookplate for Lionel Damer] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided barry of six pieces, nebule, argent (silver) and gules (red), and a bend, engrailed, azure (blue). At the precise middle chief is a crescent, the symbol of the second son. The escutcheon also contains an inescutcheon, divided per cross. The first quadrant, argent, contains an unknown symbol, possibly a garbe, sable (black). The fourth quadrant, also argent, contains two of the same symbol. The second quadrant, divided per fess, or (gold) and azure (blue), contains two swans with wings displayed. The third quadrant is the same, except it contains only a single swan. The crest is an oval frame containing a talbot's head in a crown. Above the crest is floral mantling which extends down both sides of the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 47. [Bookplate for Rainald Knightley] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an escutcheon, quartered. The first and fourth quadrants are ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), and the second and third quadrants are paly, or (gold) and gules (red). At the precise middle chief is an inescutcheon, argent (silver), containing a sinister hand, gules. The gules hand, known as the hand of Ulster, symbolizes the hounour of a baronet. The crest is composed of a tilted dexter helmet, a curved wreath, and a stag head, dexter and couped. The escutcheon is supported by an eagle or falcon on each side. The escutcheon and its supporters are framed by a border with flowers. The entire image, including text, is placed within a larger circular border, azure (blue). 48. [Bookplate for Basil Woodd Smith] In black ink, this bookplate consists of an ovular garter as bordure around the originator's name. The Latin motto is present on the garter. 49. [Bookplate for Charles Girdlestone] In black ink, this bookplate consists of text surrounded by a floral border. At the top centre of the border is a scallop shell. 50. [Bookplate for Charles Girdlestone] In black ink, this bookplate consists of the image of a church. A plate mark can be seen along the left hand side of the bookplate. 51. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 52. [Bookplate for George Wilbraham] In black ink. Escutcheon parted per pale, the sinister half azure, a bend, argent, engrailed, two bendlets, or, on either side. The dexter half parted per cross. The first and fourth quarters, argent, bendy of seven, argent and azure. The second and third quarters, barry of five, argent and azure, a canton, sable, with a wolf. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath topped with a wolf. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 53. [Bookplate for Loren Griswold DuBois] In black ink. Per blazon sinister, or (gold) and argent (silver). A lion rampant, sable (black), queue fourche, grasping a scimetar, azure (blue). A tower turreted, with banners sinister on either side, azure. Upon a straight crest wreath is a demi-lion, sable with queue fourche, grasping a scimetar, azure. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the French motto. 54. [Bookplate for Basil Thomas Woodd by Benjamin Warwick] In black ink. This bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per pale. The first pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, gules (red), are charged with three demi-Hercules, two over one. Quarters two and three, sable (black), are charged with gryphons rampant, segreant. The second pale is parted per quarter. Quarters one and four, or (gold), charged with a lion rampant, sable, on a chief, gules, in the middle part a fillet, dovetailed, argent (silver). Quarters two and three, azure (blue), are charged with a fleur-de-lis. The escutcheon is set upon a backdrop of concentric circles. The inner circle is decorated with vine-like patterns. Within the outer circle, the originator's Latin motto "non nobis" appears. Below the concentric circles, the creator's signature and address, Benjn. Warwick 124 Regent Street appear. Above the circle is a peer helmet, surrounded by vegetative mantling, and atop the helmet is a straight wreath charged with a demi-figure of Hercules. (Bernard Burke considers the Hercules figures to be woodmen holding a club over their right shoulders or savages, depending upon the source consulted). 55. [Bookplate for Sir Lawrence Palk by Ezekiel Abraham Ezekiel] In black ink: Sable, an argent eagle displayed, an argent bordure engrailed ; at the precise middle chief, the inesceutcheon of a baronet (argent, a hand gules) ; surmounted by a wreath of argent and sable, the crest a demi-globe or hemisphere ['semi-terrestrial globe of the northern hemisphere'], an eagle rousant, wings displayed and elevated ; motto on a ribbon below the shield. The bottom right corner of the bookplate was torn away and has been replaced with a light paper. 56. [Bookplate] In brown ink on white or cream paper, the bookplate consists of a thin border surrounding brown text, with the name of the company/library in a Roman-style font. 57. [Bookplate for Laurence A. Waldron by Waller] In red ink. This bookplate displays a classical theme. A neoclassical urn, draped with a laurel garland serves as the back-drop for the escutcheon. The escutcheon, argent (silver), is charged with three bull's heads caboshed, situated two over one. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger sejant. This component is encircled by the originator's Latin motto. The urn is set upon a pedestal with an oval background, framed by a garland. At the base, between the oval background and laurel garland frame, appears the name and location of the creator. 58. [Bookplate for G. P. Girdwood] Oval-shaped circular border with legend containing a motto printed in capital block letters across the top half. Bottom half of the border has shading, decorate circles, and a decorative end. Border made to look like a ribbon, one end of which loops over the bottom of the oval. End of the ribbon has thin borders, circular decorations, and almost tapers to a point with decorative curls at the end. In the center of the oval is a demi-lion rampant guardant. In its right paw, the lion holds a tree with round foliage at the top and sprawling roots at its base. Below the image is text written in stylized sentence-case serif font. 59. [Bookplate for Imperial Cotton Co. by R&M] Printed in black ink on cream coloured paper. The scene depicts dark-skinned laborers working in a cotton field. In the right-hand side of the foreground, a laborer holds a large wicker basket full of cotton on their head. To the left are two other large wicker baskets full of cotton. At least four other laborers recede into the depth of the field. They wear loose, baggy clothing and wide-brimmed hats. In the background is a wide, low brick factory building with smokestacks on the far left and one low, square tower with a flag in the middle. Below this scene is the insignia of the Dominion Crown and the text identifying the Imperial Cotton Co. 60. [Bookplate for James Croil] Printed in black ink on light green paper.
